Cold..[break][break]

Tempest's breath fogged slightly when he breathed out.[break][break]

It was a repeating pattern in this, wasn't it?[break][break]

"Would you... want to be cut off from it?" It wasn't one of his normal questions. There was a whole list, lots of carefully thought out words to try and pry answers from false divine. In the face of jayden cross's suffering, it all fell apart. That was OK, though. Tempest could work with this.[break][break]

"I've bee-" The words are cut off, Tempest suddenly jumping when glass shatters. His head whips around, body tense. A hand shoots out to shove, palm flat, into Jayden's chest; attempting to push the Admin behind him. After a quick scan, he relaxes somewhat and turns back to the other.[break][break]

"Sorry." But not really. One could never be too careful.

[break][break] "No," he said, snarling suddenly. Chien Pao was nowhere to be found — at least, not it's physical form — but suddenly, the Ruinous patron seemed to be present everywhere. In the admin's eyes, in his demeanor, in the way that he furiously glared at Tempest Quinn across from him. "Why would you ever ask that?"

[break][break] "No, I..." Suddenly, he looks weary. Perhaps even more weary than he looked before. "I'm sorry. What were we talking about?"

Surprise, then concern, are plain on Tempest's face. They melt away slowly, the Hoyeon man's features warming to jayden cross despite the frigid temperature of the room.[break][break]

"Nothing too important." Tempest lies, though only to try and easy the other's nerves. He flicks his eyes down at his notes, picks a few to skip; this bond was too new for some of them, and it seemed certain subjects were sensitive.[break][break]

[break][break] Flashes of a memory torn away from him, in a field of ghosts, led to him by a friend from a dream.

[break][break] Had he wanted to be Avatar? Had he even known to want back then?

[break][break] "I wanted to be whatever Rocket required of me," he says simply, just as it is true. He pushed himself up into a more proper position. It felt odd to be questioned like this — but it was Tempest Quinn after all. "It is the same as being a Beast, as I told you before."

[break][break] It was what was fated to be. Destined, despite what howard slayte believed.

[break][break] To simply think of his Ruinous Patron felt like a curse in itself. It felt like if he even tried to reach for the part of his mind that wanted to consider what CHIEN PAO needed of him...

If he could face down Zev Harcourt for this, he could face down Jayden. How sad it was, that personal grief for the younger man made this so much harder to endure.[break][break]

[break][break] Jayden blinked, startled at first, as the other leans towards him. His body tensed instinctively. Despite the fact that they were friends, or for that matter in-laws, there was still the risidual nature of his upbringing to take into consideration. It was difficult for him to relax around anyone. Even with people like Tempest Quinn and mint, who were generally laid-back about personal space and had no issues displaying physical affection with him, he still felt the urge to push back.

[break][break] But he was not Cillian Quinn. He did not punch him.

[break][break] In fact, the opposite. It seemed as though the warmth of the other's embrace had dampened the coldness in the room, reducing it to a pleasant chill rather than an uncomfortable vice.

[break][break] "Oh. Well, I - "

[break][break] What did he want? It wasn't the first time that he'd been asked this.

[break][break] But so much had happened since then. It hadn't seemed to matter what he'd wanted. He hadn't had a choice to begin with, so why did it matter in the first place?

[break][break] But there was something about the way that his brother-in-law looked at him that made him want to tell the truth.

[break][break] "I want to serve Rocket," he said. "Just as I always do."

When jayden cross answers, there is a flicker in his eyes. Of sadness, or maybe pity, or maybe disappointment. It's hard to pinpoint and gone so fast, turning into a brotherly comfort and affection quickly.[break][break]

"Okay."[break][break]

And Tempest accepts that answer, regardless of how he feels about it.[break][break]

With an exaggerated groan and sigh, he slaps his own thighs and starts to stand up.[break][break]

"I think I got all the data I need for now. Would you be alright getting a physical done for me sometime?" Nothing extra special, just what a normal doctor might give you. Tempest didn't need to borderline torture Rocket's Avatars for progress in his own studies.[break][break]

A smile is offered to the other, warm even in the chilly air.[break][break]

"Wanna to go get some grub?"
