One final flip through of paperwork. He had worked hard after his test run with Cillian Quinn to refine all the questions. Streamline, clarify. It still made him a bit nervous to be approaching what was basically Rocket's upper crust for his research. A giddy kind of nervous.[break][break]

Particularly with fern delaney. Tempest had really only met the Admin a handful of times. Those times had also been more focused on mission than chitchat, too. A shame.[break][break]

But he had scheduled this time in the system. With a little breath, Tempest knocked on the Admin's door.

A knock on their door pulls Fern from the distracted daze they’d slipped into. They’d been reading over a very interesting new report. And by interesting, they meant very boring. All financial humdrum. Budgets, blah blah blah.[break][break]

“Come in!” Their head snaps up abruptly, static electricity pulls at the strands of flyaway hair, as if someone had been rubbing a balloon against their head.[break][break]

But it is just a byproduct of the energy that runs under their skin now.[break][break]

In the corner, Tapu Koko is startled from its task of pulling everything off of Fern’s bookshelf. Fern rolls their eyes, but gifts Temp a smile. “Always a pleasure to see you, Quinn.”

With permission given, Tempest lets himself in. Static electricity shocks him when he touches the handle, but it is just a minor shock. Like how siblings would rub socked feet on the carpet before touching each other. Thinking little of it, he offers fern delaney his own toothy grin when he comes inside. The lifting hair is noted, with amusement.[break][break]

Best to keep that to himself.[break][break]

"Thank you for taking the time to see me." Tempest's eyes flick towards Tapu Koko, humming softly. "It seems like you have your hands full." Light, teasing, with just a side of formal. They didn't know each other very well. Tempest hoped to someday change that.[break][break]

"I'm doing some research and was hoping you could answer some questions for me."

They are always glad to see a familiar face. Social as they are, it still saves them a degree of trouble in introductions. Tempest is quick to explain himself - before Fern even has to ask.[break][break]

"It never stops," they say with a forlorn sigh. Whether they mean work or Tapu Koko, they don't specify. The answer probably falls somewhere in the middle.[break][break]
Fern perks, though, at the suggestion of research. And then are quick to offer him a seat in the soft chair across from their desk with a sweep of their hand. "Sit, sit! Would you like tea?" They prattle on with quick, easy familiarity as books continue to thunk against the floor in the corner. "I'll be happy to help - what is it you're studying, exactly?"

“Of course!” Fern swivels in their seat toward the corner where an electric kettle sits, ready to go. “It’s just earl grey, I’m afraid. Hope you don’t mind.”[break][break]
With fresh cups poured, they stretch over their desk to hand one over to Tempest. And then they sit back in their chair, one leg crossing neatly over the other.[break][break]
They peer at the offered clipboard, but allow Temp the space to ask whatever he likes. “Ah, well then by all means, ask away!” They pause and sip from their cup. “I certainly don’t mind answering.”[break][break]
No point in being dodgy. Not at the moment.

Tempest gladly accepted the cup of tea, taking a long drink while it was still warm. No sugar, no cream- just the straight tea. He hummed before placing it down on the desk carefully, not wanting to risk a spill.[break][break]

"Some of these questions you might have answered before in a more clinical sense. I'm less interested in that and more interested in you and your feelings."[break][break]

It was important to discern. Tempest wasn't much of a scientist in the physical sense; important details could be overlooked if you got too specific with certain views.[break][break]

"We'll start easy. In your own words, how did you bond with your Legendary? How did it make you feel?"[break][break]

Tempest could very faintly remember some of it, but at the time it was such a weird scenario. Plus, this wasn't about his own memory. This was about fern delaney.

Settled back into their chair, they observe Tempest with a placid gaze, though it does skirt to Tapu Koko a time or two– just to be sure it isn’t breaking any of the things it pulls from their shelf and discards on the office floor.[break][break]
“My feelings, hm?” They echo as their head tilts. Then a peal of laughter follows– light and amused. “Well I am never in short supply of those, so I hope it proves interesting.”[break][break]
Fingers drum on the top of the desk absently, and then Fern reaches for their cup to sip from as they ponder the question.[break][break]
“Well, I suppose I was awfully irritated at first.” they admit. “I prefer a certain degree of…autonomy.” Fern’s eyes drift back to the guardian. “And though it helped the lot of us back in a tight situation, it very much felt like I was being as a ticket out too.”[break][break]
Then the blue of their eyes sparks with something wild. “But it was a rush too.”

Fern’s brow furrows, “Really? Nothing at all?” Their eyes fix on their patron again, head tilting in consideration. “That’s strange to me. Though…I’m so used to being independent, maybe it’s a bit difficult for me to feel like it wasn’t a total invasion.”[break][break]
Another laugh, albeit softer this time. “Tapu Koko isn’t in my head or anything. It doesn’t speak to me. But it’s impossible to not sense it.”
As their finger traces the rim of their teacup, little sparks of static electricity crackle. Absent afterthought.[break][break]
“But maybe it’s just the nature of the gift it gave. Electricity is energy, after all.” Fern nods, stare finally tearing away from the little terror. “If you had lightning running through you at will, you’d feel the rush too, no?”

"Personally, I think they're just playing mysterious and edgy. You know how some people in this Org can be." Tempest waved it off lightly, rolling his eyes at the idea, but sharing a conspiratorial smile with fern delaney as he says it. Tempest considered jayden cross one of his best friends. The Admin would also be more than aware of how prickly that Cillian Quinn was. Rocket being so deep inside of someone like it was for those two forged certain complications in relationships, even if the two's temperaments were very different.[break][break]

"I got to feel Cil's gift once. I mostly just remember how much it hurt." Tempest let's that hang in the air for a moment, gaze drifting down to his clipboard again. Large lettering slowly drifts over the page as he writes down what Fern had told him.[break][break]

"How does it feel when you actively use your powers verses when you're not trying to use them? Any changes?"

A soft laugh follows Temp’s remark–a smile of their own flitting across their lips. “Oh, don’t I know it. Edge lords, the whole lot of them.” They say this lovingly, of course. Lovingly![break][break]
There were certainly several ways that Fern had always felt a bit other than amid the upper echelons of Rocket. How nice it was, then, to suddenly feel that perhaps they were not the only one to feel as much. Then again, they’d never been too concerned about their place. They carved it out for themself no matter how different they were from the rest.[break][break]
Because they have always been dismissive of others’ judgment. In childhood, all the way ‘til now.[break][break]
“Hurt?” they echo, head tilting. “Well that’s unfortunate. I currently don’t feel pain in my gifts.” Actually, it is the opposite. They’re impervious to the electricity they wield, and from any source it ignites from.[break][break]
“Not any radical difference, I suppose. For the most part, when I use my abilities, I feel energized. Lively.” Chaotic, unwieldy. They do not add these aloud. But it is an exhilarating thing to feel so alive and unending. “The static sort of sticks around, though.” They point at their hair. Occasionally, strands lift, as though their head has been rubbed by a balloon.

Well, If fern delaney needed an ally who wasn't such a downer in Rocket- they only needed to seek out Tempest. Rumors abound that he was a big old softie pushover. Shame that Admin Delaney might have also seen reports of the actual missions Tempest had completed with ruthless efficiency.[break][break]

"Every Avatar I've spoken with says the same. I think mine was a special case; since I felt the power of someone else's bond." And it had felt much like being a square peg being forced into a round hole.[break][break]

"Have you been 'cut off' from your bond before, like from a Sygna suit or similar? How does that make you feel compared to normal? Some people have said it made them feel slow, lethargic, or weak. Other than a Sygna Suit, has anything else ever kept you from your bond?"
