FERNANDO WAITS.

without a weapon, or an explicit way to grow his power, there is no reason to rush ahead into the forest. he can simply wait for the timer run to the very end. bide his time observing, learning from the failures before him.

some dart off into the forest. very few return. most are deleted before his very eyes. a fate he cannot risk on day one.

after the first night, they return, but those who died are the most flagrant offenders. he shows no remorse as they are killed once again. they are living simulations for him. targets that allow him to derive patterns and repetition in what he perceives to be an algorithm.

on the third night, he sees a familiar face. Michael Navidson.

“you should avoid heading into dense parts of the forest,” he advises. “you lose vision and mobility. that’s where pokemon land the easiest sneak attacks.”

whether or not he hears him is another matter altogether. after all, players crowd each other out as they swarm their first objective. it isn’t until fernando loses line of sight that his status window pops up.

detested dogmatist
occasionally, subjective or unverified statements become true. however, they are at someone else’s detriment. the game will assist by augmenting sentences that activate this ability.

which marks his second death. an incident he’s, at some part responsible for, but works out in Michael Navidson’s favor. for fernando’s innate curse compliment’s navy’s rogue-like comeback.

taking his own advice, fernando remains on the outskirts and in the clearings. they’re not as populous, as expected, but his luck runs south. he can survive for a good deal but he never finds his pokemon. eventually, running from too many pokemon becomes too difficult. he succumbs to their numbers.

it isn’t until day six that he finds some consistency in his powers. simple comments such as, “your pathing is too loose. you’ll draw aggro if you keep dodging so haphazardly,” helps divert attention away from himself. the same phrase doesn’t seem to work again. nor does it work every time, but there’s relative success every so often.

he attributes it to a cooldown.

which buys him enough time to find his CLOYSTER.

“tch.”

the rest becomes routine. landing the pokeball is an easy enough task to execute. when it strikes, he’s already mid leap, anticipating a vulnerable moment. instead, the world waits for him, balancing between two choices.

NOTHING COMES OUT. no matter how long he raises his hand or thrusts his palm, the ICICLE SPEAR fails to materialize. not that it was promised, but with the sudden change in appearance, was it that farfetched to assume it would be a repeat of the original BLADE AND BULWARK?

“hm.”

a cursory glance at his DREAM BALL tempers expectations outside of what he knows. as long as he has his pokemon, he has a way out. that’s what pokemon are—their greatest weapons, their greatest tools.

“hm.”

this time, he glances around, silently judging passing character as they assort themselves into viable parties.

Without the presence of the mysteriously helpful stranger, kyle lopez, she found herself at a loss. Impromptu parties formed, and she struggled to find her way among them. An irritable-looking Shadow Roselia hopped from group to group, her trainer failing to find a way to join in.[break][break]

People standing alone seemed more likely to be as desperate as she was.[break][break]

"Are you looking for a partner?" she asked another unnamed nobody. Using the technique the stranger had shown her before, she swiped through a menu that denoted the newfound items in her inventory:[break][break]

IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH CONVINCING TO SNAG FERNANDO. as far as he’s concerned, none of these players have any real distinction between each other. should he know them, then that would be different. but chancing upon someone like that is too unlikely of an event to wait out the fledgling parties.

the fact that their dungeon leads to PETALBURG WOODS doesn’t connect. for forest make up the most generic settings for most outside dungeons. and, how could he assume as such, when Elisabeth Fiorelli’s dream is so plain and uneventful?

“a bit mundane,” he comments during their trek.

their enemies are the typical pokemon you would find. SHROOMISH. BEEDRILL. nothing too impossible.

which belies the contrast to their originator. between the both of them, those so intimately involved with hoenn’s plight, who could assume such peaceful and unsuspecting dreams?

Those whose lives are already larger-than-life aren't lured in by the siren song of fame and fortune. They know the ugliness on the other side of that mirror, and it makes a simple life with simple pleasures all the more seductive a dream.[break][break]

For people like them, such a dream remained unattainable. They were too much at the center of everything that made Hoenn the chaotic region that it was.[break][break]

There was less conversation with this partner than the last. The latter had been chatty and personable, while this one focused on the task at hand. She was relieved she understood mechanics well enough now to appear competent, and that BEEDRILLS and SHROOMISH proved adequate fodder for someone of her experience level.[break][break]

Clearing the dungeon provided a single portal for battling a boss, and the name floating at the top indicated only one player was to step forward: her. When she stepped inside, a foreboding ochre light radiated around her, before she faced a familiar creature.[break][break]

Once more she faced Wo-chien within the Ruination of the Petalburg Woods.[break][break]

How strange it was to witness Primrose fight against the specter that haunted her every waking moment, guarding her valiantly in her dreams. Its Grass-type abilities swelled to sudden power, the MIRACLE SEED and ROSE INCENSE lending its strength. Even as the Ruinous Beast seethed and hissed, lashing back with RUINATION, the BLACK SLUDGE soothed the Shadow Roselia's wounds as she hid herself in SHADOW MIST.[break][break]

A battle that felt like it lasted an eternity was finally completed with the slice of a MAGICAL LEAF, cutting through it in its final death throes.[break][break]

Only when she had felled the Ruinous Beast, a complicated knot tightening in her stomach at the ill-gotten victory, did she return to her companion's side. "You were right," she said, feigning nonchalance. "It was something mundane."[break][break]

She wondered if his dungeon would prove the same.
