The thought felt foreign. [break][break]

Especially since he had reached out to Zev Harcourt for assistance. [break][break]

He slammed down two massive bags of mulch and seeds. "I need your help with the garden of eden." he told him as he had the man follow him via teleport to this area. It was his sacred area, few in rocket were allowed to lay their eyes on it. A massive garden that had beautiful plant life, clean water, but it was obvious the garden was over grown and needed to be tended to. [break][break]

In the center of it all, a small white birch sapling. It had grown slightly since oscar clayton and Elisabeth Fiorelli had helped him, becoming slightly larger but for the most part it was still in it's infant stages. "If the plant life here grows too much, it'll consume the tree in competition for resources."

Zev had never set foot in this place before, this isolated sanctuary near Fortree City. After arriving by teleportation, he took a moment to scan the area, mentally noting ideal ambush sites and hiding places.[break][break]

It was a habit ingrained into him since his service in Kanto's army, a habit that saved his life many, many times.[break][break]

The fact that Bryan, of all people, requested his help had surprised Zev. He'd never considered the other Rocket Beast as the type of man who wanted help, let alone sought it.[break][break]

"I'm sure there are other people who can help with weeding," Zev said, his tone cold and aloof, as usual. Nevertheless, he opened a Pokéball, releasing his Ambipom to assist with the task. "Why call me out here?"

"You." he says as he grunts to rip open one of the bags of mulch applying a slight bit too much of force and causing it to tear out too quickly. [break][break]

"Aren't afraid of me. Some of the other grunts? A bit too scared to be around me." he says as he lifts the bag up and fiddles with it so it doesn't spill out too quickly. "Besides. I don't want everyone and their mom to know about this place."

And Zev didn't care enough to tattle. He had to give Bryan credit: the other Beast chose his accomplice well. So he turned to his Pokémon to give her orders. "Ambipom, get rid of these weeds."[break][break]

The monkey chittered obediently and bounded away to start cutting down the overgrown plants with SHADOW CLAW and DUAL CHOP. Her four hands—the two normal ones and the two on her tails—allowed her to work quickly and efficiently.[break][break]

As for Zev himself, he was not one to shy from physical labor. Deciding that working in the garden would substitute a trip to the MMA gym later that day, he turned to the bags of mulch. With casual ease, he summoned a crystalline blade from the back of his hand to cut one of them open.[break][break]

Then, dismissing the blade but not the crystals that covered his wrist and arm, he picked up the bag to distribute its contents. "Where do you want this?" he asked Bryan.

Zev sends out one of his pokemon to assist with the gardening, and he thinks to do the same. But a lot of his Pokémon were not very good with a gentle touch, and by gentle, not destroy the whole damn area. He sends out his salazzle, an odd choice but it was to burn away the weeds that were harming the garden and creating fertilizer with it. [break][break]

As zev asks him where he wants it, he points to specific areas in the garden "Around these spots, I want there to be a path to walk along and some fields to play in.". His gaze can't help but linger on the crystals on zev's body, his heart rate raising ever so slightly when he saw them. [break][break]

"Your control over them has improved."

Moving to the area where Bryan indicated, Zev began to dump the mulch in a thin, even layer. He grunted at the comment about his control.[break][break]

In truth, he had more control over his crystals before his encounter with Necrozma. Though they still obeyed him, it was as if they had come out of a dormancy, emerging to cover his skin at random.[break][break]

And the thought of hiding them completely felt unnatural. It was like hiding his true self.[break][break]

"Of course I can control them," Zev said instead. That was why it was so important for new Avatars to practice them right away.[break][break]

"An Avatar who can't control their powers is a detriment to Team Rocket, not an asset. Remember Jayden in the Cave of Origin?"

"Can you even call him that?" he asks as he picks up a rake and starts to pick up dead piles of leaves. "An avatar? Those things aren't natural in my opinion. Xerneas spoke to me about those two in private." [break][break]

However he continues "Jayden was forced into it by that thing, according to him. Everyone in rocket says I'm cursed to suffer endlessly, but I at least had the option to say no. jayden cross didn't he's truly the cursed one." he says as not even he could severe a bond like that. [break][break]

"Funny though you mention Jayden though. Elisabeth's been banned from visiting the tree despite helping nurture it. I'm too afraid she'll kill it."

Zev shrugged. "For all intents and purposes, it looks like an Avatarship. But you're right—we know nothing about the Ruinous Beasts except what Elisabeth and Jayden have chosen to share with us."[break][break]

Which, frankly, was not much. Team Rocket's intelligence had collated information about the two's powers and the changes in their demeanors. About the Pokémon themselves, however, little had been gleaned.[break][break]

"You're probably right, too, about Elisabeth. Who knows what would happen if that blight of hers reached the Tree of Life."[break][break]

Zev didn't care about the tree like Bryan did, but any aftereffects of its destruction might have unwanted consequences.[break][break]

Bryan's comment about his private conversation with Xerneas piqued Zev's interest, however. He had no idea what it was like for other Avatars to commune with their patrons, only how he did it with his.[break][break]

He had told howard slayte that humans were selfish creatures, incapable of seeing beyond their own desires and goals. Zev was certain Legendary Pokémon were the same. They willingly involved themselves in the squabbles of mortals—and for what?[break][break]

At least he understood what Necrozma wanted. Vengeance was ever a straightforward matter.[break][break]

"We need to keep a close eye on both of them. We're Beasts. If anything goes wrong, it's our job to put them down."[break][break]

As he spoke, Zev's Ambipom returned to his side with bunches of weeds in her four hands. She stuffed one bundle into her mouth and munched happily as she awaited his next command.[break][break]

He, in turn, raised a questioning eyebrow at Bryan. "What's next?"

"You do remember I was a beast before you right." he says with a raised eyebrow, he was supposed to be the senior here. [break][break]

but he shrugs and lets it go, he didn't blame zev for reminding bryan. He himself was extremely selfish, only really caring for himself and his standing in rocket. "We could take a break for a bit and be lazy." he says as he plops onto the ground on his back. "Enjoy the space for a bit before we get back to work." [break][break]

He waits for a bit before answering zev "and I mean sure they obviously have ulterior motives...but I wonder what they are, he's never really asked me to do very much. except taking care of this tree for the most part."

Zev returned the raised eyebrow as Bryan flopped onto the ground but did not object. He lowered himself to sit down near the other man. Meanwhile, Ambipom finished snacking on the weeds and found a pinecone to toss around for entertainment.[break][break]

Bryan's admission about Xerneas came as a surprise. Zev expected that every Avatar understood their patron at the same level; the fact it was not true made him more certain that his bond with Necrozma was better than all the rest. More right.[break][break]

"Why do you think that is?" he asked.[break][break]

Legendary Pokémon had plenty of reasons to keep their motives hidden even from their Avatars, but Xerneas did not strike him as the sort, especially if it and Bryan spoke at length.[break][break]

"You wield your powers well, so it's not like you're a shitty Avatar." A rare compliment folded into objective observation.

As Zev listened, he pulled a pack of cigarettes from a pocket of his coat. He lit one and inhaled, drawing the nicotine into his bloodstream. A deep exhale sent a ribbon of pale gray smoke toward the sky.[break][break]

The relationship that Bryan described between him and his patron seemed as foreign to Zev as the love between a parent and their child. He understood it at an intellectual level, but at an emotional one, Bryan might as well have been speaking in an alien tongue.[break][break]
