Kepler’s relationship with everyone in Rocket who wasn’t Lulu Flint or, really, Tempest Quinn, was a bit strained at the mo’. oscar clayton was fine but he was on thin fucking ice.

But finding Chocobo was more important than keeping a safe distance. For only, like, the second time in his entire existence, he was forcing his little autistic ass to socialize outside of his comfort zone for the sake of another person. It had only happened once before and that was for Ashley Shepard .

He’d been out in the woods for goddamn days. He hadn’t showered. He’d been eating fucking powdered meals and trailmix (he’d picked the M&Ms out on the first day) and for a hot second when he looked at his reflection in his phone he’d thought he’d started growing a beard, but it had just been dirt.

jayden cross had been the first human being he’d socialized with in a little under a week. He’d have to wrap it up soon. Maybe he’d see Chocobo from space.

“So I’m using my weather balloons as GPS beepers and skybound trailcams at the same time,” he explained, clutching a thirty pound binder of topographical maps in one arm, pointing with his other. The maps were stabbed with pushpins and string ran between them in different colors for potential sightings by civilians, League, Rocket, and what fragments of data Kepler’s weather balloons had brought in.

He was, in reality, trying to triangulate a location where Chocobo-- er, the Galarian Zapdos-- might be making its home, but he didn’t want to give that away. He’d be elated at the barest blink of a sign, even seeing him at a thousand yards through binoculars, but what he didn’t want to happen was to find the bird and then hand him over immediately to grubby Rocket or League paws… so all of his notes and data were written in code, gibberish that only made sense to him, a mix of Kaonic Cybertronian and Klingon interspersed with Na’vi, and all his numbers were ciphered with a pattern that he changed on specific days that only he knew the pattern of.

His research, in turn, had a cover.

“The aim is to nail down appropriate landing sites for any future space endeavors, or dump points for jettisoned propulsion systems, or even, maybe, a new base.”

to no one's surprise, it had become rocket's recent priority to investigate the violet book and those galarian birds that had been exposed as a result of the events of the cave of origin. jayden, who had other priorities in mind, had fallen stray to his own means.

[break][break] but one could only ignore your duties for so long in rocket.

[break][break] braced with his sygna suit in attempt to keep his nastier emotions at bay, jayden walked alongside kepler brueshaber. where the younger man had his arms full of all sorts of binders, the admin merely walked with a single sword at his hip. he did not know nearly as much about the science division, but that was why kepler brueshaber was here.

“Great data on migratory patterns of Pokemon that don’t fucking matter because most of our Pokemon don’t migrate anyway because we’re a tropical climate.” Kepler said, voice scathing. He was more upset at his own failings, and getting frustrated with his lack of progress.

He also didn’t like Jayden on principle. Ashley Shepard may be the forgive and forget type, but Kepler would hold his grudges until his (hopefully early) demise.

He ran a hand through his tangled, greasy hair.

“Anyway. The topography of the local area would be unconducive to the kind of work we’re hoping to do. The area around Mt. Pyre would be better but it’s federally protected and while we don’t necessarily care that’s a whole lot of smoke we’ve potentially got breathing up out asses that we really would prefer not to deal with.”

His sarcasm was thick as the sticky sweet sap he had clumping up his hair. He hated the outdoors. It didn't make sense for him to put so much effort into a zoning investigation. He hoped he just looked really, really dedicated to his job.

jayden opened his mouth, and then closed it, as kepler brueshaber went off a scathing rant about his scientific endeavors.

[break][break] though he personally had thoughts on the success of such things even without a finalized goal, he could envision why maybe others weren't the same way. perhaps he wasn't close enough to it.

[break][break] to be honest, he probably wasn't close enough to kepler brueshaber in general. it was why he had no idea of the other's burning distaste for him, or the grudge held because of their boyfriend.

Kepler was a scientist, first and foremost, and knew that a lot of research endeavors turned up dick butkis, with a lot of wasted effort and resources and nothing to show for it. But this one was personally important to him, for a number of reasons.

He had to find Chocobo. He had to.

Luckily enough, he’d run through his Pro-Rocket-Anti-League covers so often that they were becoming second nature. So when Jayden joked about dropping Leaguers in volcano, he reacted with a knee-jerk “Preach, sister,” that was flatline emotionally and just tired enough to sound sarcastic.

Meanwhile, he imagined Jayden taking a nice little hot lava bath.

Which wasn’t unique to just Jayden, mind. There were a lot of people-- faction notwithstanding-- that he’d like to dunk in a volcano, at the moment.

Riding the middle line of the Rocket-League railcar was beginning to chafe.

“There’s a spot north of Slateport and West of Oldale, around Route 110,” and far away from any pseudo-confirmed sightings of the Galarian birds that Kepler knew of, “that I think would be perfect. Topographically it’s ideal because it’s essentially raised flatland between the mountains and the coast. It’s forested but not so much as to be a hindrance, and it doesn’t garner a lot of foot traffic.”

it was a good thing that jayden was not well-versed in emotional dialogue, because kepler's sarcasm did not reach his ears. just the other's steadfast loyalty — or at least, what he assumed to be as such.

[break][break] "both are options are good," he nodded with approval, mulling over both. though nowhere near to the same level as sootopolis, they had enough of a foothold in slateport to make such means feasible. and as kepler brueshaber mentioned, oldale was far enough into the abject wilderness that it would draw no warning signs if rocket slipped in sensors without notice.

[break][break] the town was even farther away than oldale, pocketed away and now barren after the events of meteno.

I don’t think grabbing another little island next to our other little island would do much, speaking from a strategically positioning standpoint. We need a mainland presence. At some point, I mean.”

“There’s nothing on Dewford, and it’s so far away. Having two strongholds at such a distance would be a strategic disadvantage. There’s nothing to Pacifidlog, either. What use is a series of empty islands? Moving backward, instead of forward? Mossdeep is a technological reservoir. Not only that, but with it, we pretty much isolate a large path to Evergrande. Mossdeep also has a direct path to the mainland. We could move easily into Lilycove, Mt. Pyre, all the way up to the Safari Zone.”

He stopped talking abruptly, and snorted an exhale.
