Closing his eyes, the gym leader takes in what Noel has to say. His face betrays nothing about the thoughts beneath. When Noel says that no one is invincible, he feels a sharp pain in his heart. It’s nothing but a phantom pain, a burning memory of a knife. Noel doesn’t know how right he is.[break][break]
“Yeah,” the sheriff finally agrees, “you’re right. Nobody’s invincible. Not your enemies. Not your friends.” His eyes meet Noel’s. “And not you. Always remember that. If you die, there’ll be people who miss the hell out of you.”[break][break]
Hattori inclines his head to the right, just enough for the eye there to glance at Navy. Hattori alone knows the full extent of the hypocrisy spoken. His Lord died for what he believed – charged into a fight he knew might kill him. Whatever the Greninja’s thoughts on the matter are, he falls back into place.[break][break]
“Hattori! No mercy!” By the time Navy’s finished the first syllable, his shinobi is gone. Jumping up onto one of the high rocks left, he fires off an ice beam at the Whimsicott. A thin layer of ice makes his dark skin gleam in the light, indicating his type has shifted to ice.[break][break]
“Better go on the offense, and quick.”

Smiling softly at his sheriff, his eyes lock in with his mentor's. He was proud to have been taken under the wing of someone who's style was very much like his. Noel couldn't have asked for a better tutor. And it's a student's duty to one day surpass their teacher.[break][break]

"Don't worry Navy. I won't be dying anytime soon. I can't. There's so much to do still and so much to see. And I know this might sound arrogant, who knows what will happen in the future after all... But I will not fall until my dream is fulfilled. I won't ever stop until I become Champion, stop Rocket and finally see our world free from any danger. It might be impossible... but that won't stop me from pursuing that goal. Now let's end this here and now."[break][break]

Perhaps that same boy from back then still had a place in his heart. No matter how hard he tried, there was no changing certain aspects of his personality.[break][break]

The Whimsicott had its guard up, taking the full brunt of the Ice Beam against its cotton shield. Ice began to form and crystallize around the small Pokemon. If nothing was done, soon they would be completely encased in ice.[break][break]

Pressing on the tera orb accessory on his belt, a wave of pink energy begins to radiate around the bipedal Pokemon. Crystals of its own start to cover its body, completely breaking off the ice and causing the attack to dissipate. Rapidly, Noel's Pokemon became encased in its Fairy Tera, its entire figure shining like a polished gem. As the transformation finished, his Pokemon would then summon up a Fairy Wind towards the Greninja, a strong gust of wind being blown all throughout the arena as along the path of the attack, rocks were cut clean in two.

Looking at Noel, Navy feels caught between the past and present. Blinking, he looks at Noel. He burns with righteous indignation at an indifferent government, too overwhelmed by responsibility to truly help anyone. Blinking again, he sees Gabriel Navidson. His brother burned with a desire to help those around him. It burned his life out. Burned him until nothing was left but ash.[break][break]
He prays this doesn’t end the same way. They had almost the same reaction, too, the first time they battled. Looking down at Hattori struggle against the wind, he’s almost relieved when the Greninja crumples, falls to the earth, faints. Hattori falls into his back, remembering a warrior’s pride, even in defeat.[break][break]
“That’s enough, Hattori. You did good.” Recalling his last official Pokemon, he supposes the match is over. Noel stands victorious. It’s a clear cut victory. Beaming with pride, he hits another button on his platform. Ambient lights turn bright, lighting the whole wide battlefield around them. The complex they’re in is a vast maze of granite carved from the stone. Stepping down, Navy motions for Noel to follow him.[break][break]
“You did good, too. Guess you’re ready as you’ll ever be. Hope it doesn’t take you too long to get the rest of your badges. Not as simple as showing up to the gym, you know. Lots of the gym leaders are busy, it being war time and all. Here.” With those words of advice given, he pulls open his jacket pocket, pulls out the valor badge pinned among the other badges, and tosses it to Noel.[break][break]
“Before you go, got another little tradition.” They stand before a wall of granite, polished to smoothness. Carved into the wall are the names and words of trainers who came before. Handing Noel a chisel, he leaves the young trainer to inscribe whatever words he will.

He could hardly believe his eyes. They had won. Standing there motionless, it wasn't until the badge was flung across the arena that he was broken out of his trance. Fumbling, almost dropping the badge, he couldn't help but spend a moment just admiring the shining piece of metal. Noel felt as if he was now holding a part of himself now in his very hands. A symbol of all his hard work, determination, strife and loss summed up on this tiny pin. Clutching it tightly in his hand, he would then place it inside his case, the first of many to come. [break][break]

Beckoned to the wall of trainers who had done the very same as him, it was like looking at a piece of history. And now, with chisel in hand, he would soon be a part of the legacy of Dewford's gym. All the trainers before him, and all the trainers after him would now see his name and know, he had proved his worth today.[break][break]

Perhaps it was the nerves of the whole situation getting to him, or the fact that he felt like he was stuck in a dream and had yet to awaken, but his handiwork was not the best job he had done, however the words were still legible. His name now etched into the stone with his message laid plain and bare for all to see.[break][break]

"Never lose hope. Anything is possible if you just go out and try."[break][break]

His hands were trembling, a profound happiness was swelling up from inside him the likes of which he had never felt. Everything had now finally sunk in, and as he turned around to face his mentor who had done so much for him up until this point, he held back tears that so eagerly wanted to be released. It wouldn't befit him to cry over a victory. Yet all that is thrown away when his Whimsicott who had now reverted back to its normal self, jumps into its trainer's arms, ecstatic and joyful over what they had done, that Noel finally lets it all go. Hugging his Pokemon back with a smile so wide and tears rolling down the side of his cheek. He couldn't have done this without any of his Pokemon's help, they had truly been there with him every step of the way.[break][break]

Using his sleeve to wipe away the waterworks, he then turns to Navy with the same smile and clears his throat.[break][break]

"Thank you Navy... I mean it. If it wasn't for everything you had done for me, who knows what I'd be doing right now. But my journey has only just begun. As you said before, Hoenn's got a lot of problems. But when everything is all said and done, when the world is a better place, and when I've become Champion. I hope we can face each other again one more time, all out with everything on the table."
