volcarona.

relatively fresh memories of kim cole-essam danced into frame; his winged beast having conquered her own team by making very good use of the move quiver dance.

"be careful, persian," she advised. "i can tell how strong they are."

cait prided herself on being a small time expert on bug-types, having raised dozens within her lifetime. so the sight of the fire-type brought with it a wave of general information; information that granted her the opportunity to more easily consider a plan of action.

"keep your distance for now," she said, a hint of excitement coloring her tone. "until i say otherwise."

her persian appeared to consider this command, forced to remain idle at her mistress's behest. it wasn't long - seconds, at the most - before she launched another power gem without the need for any verbal prompting. its power shot through the air; radiant and potent in equal measure.

In the meantime, Volcarona would make good use of her time unprovoked and uninterrupted to perform her intricate quiver dance. In doing so, dust falls from her body and she appears to glow brighter and appear more invigorated and energetic. [break][break]

Unlike the rest of Stormy's Pokemon, who were always the more eager and aggressive types to dive into battle with tooth and claw - Volcarona was a lot more laidback and willing to wait. She had no reason to put herself in danger for the sake of winning, she could easily let the opponent come to her.[break][break]

She would, however, continue to regard the Alolan-forme Persian with suspicion. Cats tended to chase bugs, and were exceptionally good hunters. This wouldn't be an easy fight to win, but she was confident she'd put in her best effort.[break][break]

There, that was it.[break][break]

The power gem shoots at random, unprovoked, unexpected. The fire queen is so transfixed on the Persian she misses the precise moment she breaks her composure to attack. It catches her off guard and she twists in the air to avoid being hit directly. Pollen sparks from her soft furry torso and she makes a trilling, surprised noise.[break][break]

the volcarona had been caught off guard by the persian's previous attack and forced into a momentarily distracted state of mind. cait urged her pokemon to lunge in that moment, the cat springing into action the moment she was granted the opportunity to commit to a charge.

"slash!"

with a yowl of excited the pokemon dashed forward prior to bunching up their muscles to perform a great leap. she'd arch elegantly through the air, her claws extended and imbued with energy as she aimed for the pokemon's exposed side and the beautiful wing perched there.

Cait's moment had arrived, but so had Stormy's. The dark-haired woman's eyes narrow, her breathing shallow as she watches the Persian leap. Volcarona is weak, unsure what direction the cat is coming from. There's a layer of trust there, a mutual understanding. Stormy is waiting.[break][break]

"Heat wave!"[break][break]

The Volcarona's body overheats, flames explode from her fur, from her wings, from her antennae. She's like an ocean of fire, crashing over herself and her opponent if the cat had not stopped in her assault.[break][break]

If the cat had not redirected her pounce and had not avoided her attack, the Volcarona would be driven to the ground at the same time, her wing now punctured with perfect holes, torn and raspy in the wind.[break][break]

persian remained committed, but in exchange for her defiance in the face of the heat wave she was on the receiving end of a considerable amount of damage. her fur was thoroughly singed, the flesh beneath sensitive in sections due to the fire-infused strike. but she had - at the very least - succeeded in her initial objective of forcing the bug to ground.

the feline appeared pleased by her small victory, but her expression transitioned into a horrified grimace as she was spontaneously engulfed in flame.

'is that a burn?'

both cait's and persian's eyes rounded, a hint of panic present within the latter's gaze as she released a ragged gasp.

'we have to hurry this along,' she thought. 'before persian's too weak to continue.'

"dark pulse."

as the dark-type hovered above the bug, she'd heed the command and charge the beam; intending to release it at close range.

Volcarona is slammed to the ground despite her attempts to remain upright. Her wing is torn, she can feel the wind ripple through the tattered flesh It'll be some time before it heals.[break][break]

And yet, she managed to set the Persian on fire. She can smell the scorched fur and the burnt skin. It's satisfying to see the cat burst into flames as a result of a burn. It means she's done what she needed to do.[break][break]

Unfortunately, the burn doesn't seem to slow down her opponent nearly enough. As she weakly adjusts herself to account for her busted wing, the Volcarona watches as the world slows down, Persian looming over her body and some sort of dark energy emanating from her forehead.[break][break]

And then it hurts, oh god, it hurts. The dark pulse slams her battered body and she's unsure if she'll pull through this time. In her desperation, she releases a terrifyingly loud bug buzz, her fur ruffling with the effort. She hopes it's enough to combat the waves of dark, negative energy causing her such pain.[break][break]

her foe's shriek was dreadful, the noise piercing and bombarding her sensitive eardrums. the persian retreated only to allow herself a moment to recover from the sound and the new wave of pain that bordered on crippling, her puffed up features twisting into a snarl. her attempt at reprieve was followed by another burn, her lips curling to reveal pointed teeth as she suffered.

"you're not doing yourselves any favor, girl. you need to keep it up."

cait's tone of voice was firm as she spoke to her dark-type companion, her eyes narrowing as she settled her gaze upon the injured volcarona. the moth's wounds weren't life threatening nor permanent - but they wouldn't be battle ready for a period of time. thankfully stormy didn't appear to be distressed over her pokemon's current predicament, which was a solid improvement to how she had reacted during their very first battle.

"he didn't deserve you."

the grass-type gym leader peered at her fire-type counterpart, crossing her arms over her chest as she addressed the adopted silph.

"and he'll never be worth your time."

her persian released a screech, the raw sound manifesting as shock waves that were directed at the bug. the feline sounded furious, the noise tinged with an anger that reflected her mistress's.

Stormy takes in a small breath between parted lips, her heartrate increasing in ancitipation as her Volcarona drives back the Alolan Pokemon. It grants the fire-type Pokemon a moment, just a moment, to recollect herself and gather her strength.[break][break]

She overhears Cait's chastising and she licks her lips.[break][break]

But then she hesitates and she feels cold and surprised and afraid because Cait has dropped the topic she had hoped to avoid. Her fist clenches, nails digging into the soft skin of her palm. Her teeth graze the inside of her bottom lip, drawing blood.[break][break]

Her thoughts are momentarily distracted by the Persian's screech, and Volcarona vibrates with the horrible noise.[break][break]

"It doesn't make it hurt any less."[break][break]

She almost whispers it, the pain of admitting her pain making her breathless.[break][break]

Volcarona recovers and repeats her bug buzz, her body vibrating, shaking, trembling, quaking as fiery pollen embers fall from her body. The scream resonates, it's high-pitched squeal hurting even Stormy's ears.[break][break]

rattata ♂ : guts - endeavor, crunch, super fang, focus energy, hyper fang, tail whip

cait remained unresponsive for a moment, her silence almost deafening as she leveled stormy with a look that was difficult to read. she maintained that silence even as her persian collapsed, the pokemon writhing in pain. one of her larger flying-types descended without needing to be prompted by their mistress, retrieving the persian and removing the felled feline from the field.

"that's two," she said.

it appeared as though the gym leader intended to leave the topic alone, though it was highly unlikely that she'd do so forever. but, for now, she appeared to regain her focus; her mind returning to the battle at hand. the pokemon she summoned next didn't appear like much at all, the purple-furred rodent that appeared scampering onto the field and proudly baring their prominent fangs at the moth.

"crunch."

despite his lack of bulk, the normal-type made up for it in speed and accuracy. he lunged, taking advantage of the injured moth to aim toward its abdomen and furiously bite down.

Stormy can feel her skin crawl as a result of her silence. More than anything, more than her own ego and self-loathing, she wants to run across the field and beg for a hug. To sink into her best friend's arms and pour her heart out and confide in her.[break][break]

But this isn't the place for that. This is where she needs to prove that she's strong, even if it's only proving it to herself. So she sets her jaw and swallows the lump in her throat and fights the tears welling behind her eyes at Cait's silence. Her hands ball into fists, nails biting into skin as she collects herself.[break][break]

Cait's Persian is retrieved and replaced with a small Rattata, and Stormy in return watches in cold silence as her Volcarona's last remaining ounce of energy is claimed by the creature's crunch. She returns her bug-type Pokemon without a second thought, replacing it with her Flareon, the same Flareon that Cait had given to her a long time ago.[break][break]

It fluffs out its mane of fur and makes a growling noise, locking eyes with the Rattata before hoping to attract it with baby-doll eyes. In the hope that the Pokemon was thoroughly distracted, he would charge him with a fleet-footed quick attack, fully intent on barrelling into the Rattata with his full body weight.[break][break]

rattata hesitated briefly, the flareon's shimmering gaze causing his mind to draw a blank. it awarded the fire-type an opportune moment to strike, her bulk impacting the tiny rodent with astonishing force. he released a pained squeal, the rodent sent sprawling before he hurriedly regained his footing. a noise that wasn't at all dissimilar to a hiss escaped him, a quick grooming motion smoothing out his own ruffled fur.

"focus energy," cait said. "and then a hyper fang."

Flareon slams into the side of the tiny rat, sending it sprawling off to the side. While she herself rights herself to come to a halt, she shakes her mane and watches as the Rattata recuperates from the attack, fully prepared to retaliate.[break][break]

Stormy, meanwhile, nearly flinches under Cait's cold tone. While she's aware that the woman, her best friend isn't angry with her, she still finds it painful to listen to and witness her cool rage in regard to Alexander.[break][break]

She had loved him, so, so much.[break][break]

The Flareon takes a step back, prepared to dodge as the focus-powered Rattata came in for a hyper fang, but is unsuccessful. The fire-type Pokemon shrieks in pain as its fangs sink deep into her shoulder.[break][break]

Heat explodes from the base of her tail, engulfing her in flames in an attempt to shake the Rattata. Her lava plume is intense but brief as she whirls to find and hunt down her opponent. Flames lick between her teeth as she waits.[break][break]

the lava plume engulfs the rodent, causing him to release his painful grip upon the flesh of flareon's shoulder. as a direct consequence of being so close, a burn had been inflected. the infectious heat actively ravaging the rodent, the pokemon enduring the same agony as persian had. his eyes widened as he backpedaled, seeking to distance himself from his foe as he trembled.

"perfect," cait commented.

the normal-type's muzzle twisted into a look that was a strange combination of a grin and a grimace. the ability guts had activated, a red aura surrounding him as his physical prowess experienced a massive surge of power.

"another hyper fang. make it double."

he obeyed almost eagerly, deciding to target whichever portion of the flareon's body that most pleased him. rattata's attempt was directed at the fire-type's ear, the little male intending to bite fiercely into the delicate flesh before aiming to deliver a dig into the arch of her back. he chattered madly as he did so, the noise akin to laughter.

Stormy can feel her breath catch in her throat, the colour momentarily draining from her face at the confident and devilish reaction Cait presents. Rattata seems to almost grow in power despite the burn, it's ability taking effect and completely wiping out any chance Flareon had of weakening the Pokemon's attack.[break][break]

She swallows hard as her Pokemon struggles against the Rattata's next fierce hyper fang. It seems to hurt even more, causing the Pokemon to shriek and writhe in pain. It quickly slams itself to the ground, rolling desperately to shake the tiny Pokemon. [break][break]

Flareon seeks out a nearby obstacle, a tree trunk or something that stands tall and firm. Assuming the Rattata is still lodged deep in her shoulder, the Pokemon lunges forward in a quick attack burst of speed. She slams herself against the tree as hard as she can using this momentum, hoping to squish the Pokemon between herself and the obstacle. Should that have worked, she'd reel back on the rodent, taking a moment to stun it again with another baby-doll eyes.[break][break]
