It's in the brief moment that Flareon notices Rattata's distraction that she lunges. Of course, the Rattata had already prepared itself for attack, leaping in tandem to collide with her in another hyper fang. It was an effective strategy, surely, but by the time the Rattata would spring, the Flareon would have already ducked and swerved, hooking her claws in the soft grass to launch herself opposite. [break][break]

The Rattata rips at fur but nothing more as the purple creature slides off the side of her shoulder. The power of the bite reverberates as it's teeth clack harshly back against each other, unless they remained open. Stormy watches with bated breath as her Flareon pants heavily. The Pokemon's legs are trembling slightly as she attempts to maintain her posture and poise. [break][break]

"I know you can do this, Flareon."[break][break]

Stormy commands, despite the comment not being formed around one. Flareon twitches her ears in acknowledgement before shaking herself, ridding herself of a cloud of loose fur and probably dried blood.[break][break]

She then seems to ignite, her paws setting the ground aflame as she sprints hard towards the Rattata. She's engulfed in a flare blitz as she utilizes another quick attack motion to zig-zag and approach at an impossible speed and without any real defining or hopefully predictable direction. Her paws skid across the grass as she anticipates her impact with the opponent.[break][break]

rattata ♂ : guts - endeavor, crunch, super fang, focus energy, hyper fang, tail whip

the flareon's following attacks were far too much for the rattata to endure, the combination of burn and the pair of physical attacks that had been promptly delivered knocking him completely off balance. a noise akin to a hiss escaped him as he is sent sprawling, his breaths escaping him in quick pants before they slowed as consciousness was effectively wrested from him.

"two."

cait nodded, appearing satisfied with her rodent's performance despite his failure. she made a note to use him more often, aware that his potential was great despite his size. his sire, an impressively large raticate, would go about ensuring his son was tended to; the normal-type situating himself at his child's side within a few short moments.

"your flareon's strong," she remarked, nodding. "once she's returned to the field proper i'll bring out my next pokemon."

cait helpfully gestured toward the bridge which connected the field and the forest, allowing for the fire-type to more easily return to battle without the fear of accidentally tumbling into the river. she'd consider her options in the silence that followed, the gym leader's eyes narrowing as she mulled over who to bring out next.

'a dark-type and a normal-type,' she thought, taking her last pair into consideration.

Flareon stumbles as her opponent falls, and Stormy nearly does as well. Despite the battle not technically coming to its end, Stormy's strength is spent. There's a great sadness and weight in her chest that threatens to collapse her, and it's all she can do to keep herself from crashing.[break][break]

As Cait's Pokemon is returned, Flareon takes note of Stormy's defeated posture and her readiness to let go. The fire-type Pokemon takes care to follow the gym leader's direction to the bridge, crossing it gingerly while favouring her injured shoulder, the one that the Rattata's teeth had found purchase in. It's swollen and angry, threatening to drag her down.[break][break]

But still she pursues, making her way to Stormy. Together, the pair fall to their knees in each other's arms and Flareon rests her head up on Stormy's shoulder, burrowing her warm face against her master's. Stormy's tears begin to fall and she waves a hand in defeat towards Cait, begging her to end the battle.[break][break]

"I don't think I can do this, Cait. She might be strong, but I am not."[break][break]

Her sobs threaten to challenge her voice, to break her.[break][break]

"it's because of that man," she replied, sharply. "you're feeling this way because he hurt you."

the bitterness crept back into her tone, her green gaze brightening for a moment as she experienced a familiar surge a broiling rage.

"alexander."

she spat out the name as though it was a curse - and a particularly harsh one at that.

"he didn't deserve you, stormy. i'm sorry if i sound like a broken record but it's true."

cait approached her friend, closing the distance between them before kneeling at her side.

"and no matter what you claim - i'll always recognize you as hoenn's beacon of strength. you're a silph for celebi's sake," she continued, her tone remaining hard and certain. "you're a gym leader, stormy. and a literal mistress of fire. you know that."

Stormy flinches against Cait's harsh words, her shoulders sagging, her posture weakening. Of course she knew that that was what Cait was going to say. She'd been saying it so many times already. It still hurts though, for the truth to be so crudely put.[break][break]

Cait approaches but Stormy doesn't flinch away. She's trembling as Flareon buries herself deeper against her chest, desperate to calm the storm that was her trainer's grief. The woman's hand brushes the top of the Pokemon's head briefly, but she waits for Cait.[break][break]

Her friend's words resonate in her for a moment as another tear slides over her cheek. She's since stopped her whimpering in an attempt to pull herself together because Cait is right. She's a Silph, and a literal mistress of fire. She's proven how strong she is time and time again by becoming a gym leader, by rescuing the commissioner, by fighting tooth and nail to protect those she loves.[break][break]

"I know Cait. I'm so sorry."[break][break]

She raises a hand to wipe away another stray tear, her other hand balled into a fist.[break][break]

"But I loved him Cait. I really, really loved him."[break][break]

her much beloved stormy who had been harmed by a man who was ultimately unworthy of her time and her love. celebi's avatar would do all she could as her friend and most loyal companion, cait more than willing to prove that she'd never abandon her.

'never,' she thought.

her devotion to stormy wasn't at all dissimilar to her devotion to her eldest brother, the woman's adoration infinite and perhaps even all-consuming.

"let's go to my apartment," she proposed, resting a gentle hand upon the woman's narrow shoulder. "i'll make some tea and you can even rest for a bit."

cait felt as though the woman needed time away from her work to adequately recover, unwilling to have her return to lavaridge so soon.

"we can also get your pokemon looked at."

Stormy wipes the remaining tears from her eyes because, let's face it, it's embarrassing and she's stronger than this. Her cheek rests against the woman's hand on her shoulder as she seeks out warmth, comfort. [break][break]

"Okay. Okay.. that sounds good."[break][break]

Her hand rises to lay on top of Cait's, her fingers weaving between hers as she gives her best friend a squeeze. She smiles, feigning strength, forcing herself to her feet and to collect herself. [break][break]

"Did I also just muss up this gym challenge?"[break][break]

She laughs awkwardly as her thumb brushes under one eye, a shaky breath helping to steady her as her Flareon leans up against her knee. The Pokemon's thoughtful face brings her back to reality and she nods.[break][break]

"You battled excellently, Flareon. You and the rest of my Pokemon."[break][break]
