There’s probably an agreement being violated by his presence here. Given the circumstances, Navy somewhat doubts Rocket is going to care.[break][break]
Kyogre roars. The great primordial Leviathan fires off a water spout. His Roaring Moon’s dodge is a mirace. Most people couldn’t handle a dive like it took, almost bringing him to the edge of the water. A second blast of water flies their way.[break][break]
This one is stopped by an ice beam. Hattori clings to his Lord. Burned black by Groudon’s flames, he shows no sign of fear when brought to battle this god.[break][break]
Some might call this a fool’s errand, or suicide. Navy simply calls it the right thing to do. If no one else answered the call, and it seems no one had, this thing would have charged right for Sootopolis. There are some who would relish the thought of Rocket risking their manpower or avatars. Not the sheriff. There is no justice in that, especially if Kyogre kills one innocent soul.[break][break]
So, he fights his hopeless battle, hoping the god of the sea will see fit to leave before Navy is thrust beyond the final curtain once more.

Rocket, as he predicts, have a far greater, whale-shaped problem to worry about.[break][break]

Though Cillian could think of little he'd like to do less than pursuing a titan of the sea into its domain, his bond with Lugia made him one of the first names that came up when issues sprang up with the rogue leviathan.[break][break]

Of course.[break][break]

Unwilling to defy orders even in the face of his own abject terror, Cillian answers the call.[break][break]

But he is not the first. And it is not a Rocket he meets at the climax of Kyogre's assault.[break][break]

might logically assume that the WHIRLPOOL which opens up beneath him is a result of Kyogre's dominion. Indeed, the vortex encompasses the furious beast... which seems to enrage it, rather than offering some sanctuary. It fights against the current, and its battle-cry is met with another: the deep, corrupted song of the Guardian.[break][break]

She bursts from the depths to avoid an ORIGIN PULSE, flaring her wings as she transitions from sea to sky. Upon her back, Cillian narrows his eyes toward the Sherriff.[break][break]

"You lost?"

But he does not attack.

Somehow, he knew Rocket would send to deal with this, if they sent anyone. He is, after all, the very best of them. Smaug sniffs blood on the air, trying to turn towards the newcomer. Navy grips his reins hard, pulling with all of his might, pulling until it feels like the bones in his lame left hand are about to pop out.[break][break]
“Not gonna let it hurt the people of Sootopolis.” Is the answer he gives, howled over the storm. Up here, it’s nowhere near as loud as it is down below. “If you wanna fight ‘bout it, let’s punch Kyogre’s nose first.”[break][break]
Turning his gunmetal eyes away from the man who killed him, he looks down at the leviathan. It struggles to right itself within its own domain. Lugia is, after all, the one god with whom it shares a domain. Knowing just what might be waiting at his back, he prepares for a leap of faith.[break][break]
“Or if you wanna tell your buds you did it all by yourself, fine by me. They’ll believe you. After all…” Smaug dives, taking the next words with him. It’s a mad suicide dash right to Kyogre’s face, striking at the beast point-blank with a brutal throat chop.[break][break]
“…you’re their fearless leader.”

She helps, rather than hinders the sherriff, her ICY WINDS slowing the leviathan just enough to see its maw close around empty air.[break][break]

A cool southern wind blows at his back. For a moment, he feels like the Pale Rider of Galar once more. Would that he had Spectrier here with him today. He misses his Valkyrie, even if this is no time for rumination or introspection.[break][break]
It’s time for action. Kyogre howls in manic fury, conjuring a water spout that twirls about the battlefield. The funnel of wind and water threatens to consume them both. Smaug is urged forward, delivering a breaking swipe before flying straight up, back into Lugia’s domain.[break][break]
“Death ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. Take it from me, it’s just a vacation.” His dread of the grave and its empty black isn’t for Cillian. “Not everybody’s got a god in their corner, Quinn. Still gotta fight. Still gotta do my part. Sootopolis don’t deserve to be destroyed just ‘cause Rocket’s there.” [break][break]
Kyogre seems to disagree with some part of his assessment. It launches up another wave of origin pulses, rapid moving bubbles of pure primordial water. At least it keeps their conversation entertaining.

As she recovers from Kyogre's relentless assault, Smaug guards Lugia's back; the deep purple leviathan answers with a low, mournful song of thanks. A strange cry, meant to be heard in the ocean's depths, warped by corruption.[break][break]

"Shame you've thrown your lot in with them." A loud crash of THUNDER punctuates the sentence, lightning's flash illuminating Cillian's scarred visage. "Rocket could use someone like you."[break][break]

Yet it's no true invitation, because Cillian thinks would sooner die again.[break][break]

When the subject shifts to Temp, the underboss actually smiles. It's a wicked, terrible thing, lit by the storm's tongues that arc out toward the ocean.[break][break]

"He's already scary." Golden eyes gleam in the downpour. "I'd be more worried for the god."[break][break]

Temp faced them without fear, without the reverence afforded by others. Cillian both admired and feared for him, especially gazing into the abyss of Kyogre's maw. It could swallow them whole without thought.

“Maybe we could do a double date next time League and Rocket decide to have a party.” He teases, equal parts excitement and dread at his own idea. “You two versus Melody and me. Now that’d be a good fight.” Smaug circles, his red eyes never straying far from the god below. Both tamer and dragon can see Kyogre realizing that this, like so many of the other fights fought against it this month, isn’t worth the price it has to pay.[break][break]
It's all a distraction from what Cillian said. With the gift of hindsight offered by the unown of yuletide past, he knows just how right the underboss is. In another life, where he championed a world of strength, he’d flourish in Rocket. No bureaucracy. No rules save the rules of nature. Battle under a red sun. A beast with an archangel’s name.[break][break]
But that’s not the world he wants. They’ll never truly be friends in this world, even if they know one another more intimately than friends ever could. The bond between murderer and victim runs deep.[break][break]
“Come on. Let’s punch Kyogre in the nose. Got a plan.”[break][break]
Hattori’s out, clinging to Navy’s back. The one-eyed frog gives the man who stole his eye a fearless salute. Since they last met, his skin has been burned black by Groudon’s flames.[break][break]
Without much warning, he dives. Hattori shoots an ice beam at the water around Kyogre, freezing it solid. It serves to make the lawless sea much harder for its master to navigate.[break][break]
They’ve all the ingredients for a perfect storm.

“…but hit me. Hard as you can. Everything you’ve got, Quinn.” Kyogre seems to be way ahead of Navy. From behind comes a torrent of origin pulses. As the cage closes in, manic panic starts to set in. This can’t be where things end. Navy thinks he can understand the legendary sea leviathan’s thought process well enough.[break][break]
Hurt it just a little bit more and it’ll go away.[break][break]
Hattori stands on Navy’s shoulders. He pulls infinity energy towards himself.

His burned frog nods. Infinity energy gathers around him. His one eye closes. Nothing in the world exists. Nothing save the attacks coming from both sides, and how to pivot their energy. That’s all it is, at the end of the day: energy. Electricity from one side, the shape of water on the other. They meet in the middle, on top of Hattori. On top of Navy, and of Smaug.[break][break]
They simply aren’t there.[break][break]
In their place is nothing but a slime piece of driftwood. Perhaps it is from a passing ship. Maybe Hattori pulled it like a magician out of a hat from some long forgotten wreck. The how doesn’t matter. What matters is the result.[break][break]
greninja sets a particularly sturdy substitute. after the substitute is destroyed, greninja appears in a puff of smoke, inflicting the damage accrued by the substitute back on its opponent.
[break][break]
What accumulates in that piece of wood is the power of two gods. One god is a mighty thing. Two is a force powerful enough to move mountains. All their terrible force is gathered there, in one place.[break][break]
Hattori appears from a puff of smoke. This frog, small, burned, scarred, and misshapen, does something larger creatures can only dream of. He kicks a god with enough force to send Kyogre flying out of the water, out of its icy prison. Blood flies from its nose, proof of the wound inflicted.[break][break]
He lands on the ice and watches the panic in Kyogre’s gold eyes. It turns. It dives. The rain begins to die down.[break][break]
“Good trick, huh?” Navy asks, flying up near Lugia. His eyes scan the sea, as if wondering if this is really over.

Cillian might've clapped, were he the type. Instead, he only shakes his head in quiet appreciation of the spectacle.[break][break]

It would be easy, so easy, to strike when was weakened. The remnants of Kyogre's DRIZZLE remain, enough to ensure a HURRICANE'S destruction. He could strike a swift victory for Rocket in a single shared thought. Lugia's willing. He can feel it in the way her muscles tense, in the PRESSURE that hangs ever-present in her presence.[break][break]
