"Allen had something come up. They finally found his sister's body in the rubble..." The voice over the ranger comms had said. "You're the closest ranger to the route he'd been assigned, so we're asking you to go there and meet his partner for the assignment. It's LEAGUE work so I'm sure you'll want it, right?"[break][break]

The trek there had been easy enough. This new island that had sprouted out from ROUTE 105 was still relatively unfamiliar to most people, of course. Remiel had been busy getting himself lost in the jungle before being given the coordinates to this trail he was meant to help secure.[break][break]

Traveling beside his POIPOLE, who was eager to explore as much as it could, the exiled royal eventually reaches his destination to find a small Jeep waiting for him in the middle of a grassy valley. He lifts a hand in greeting his partner but stops just short of calling out when he realizes who it is.[break][break]

"Annalise... is that really you?"

Happiness, shock, and a pang of shame pull his expression in three different directions. It had been so very long since he'd last seen her.[break]

annalise nudges crystal-speckled ground with the heel of her sneaker, brows furrowed, ruminating on the secondhand information she pried out of Greyson Connors — as well as ranger reports — on the bloody war that happened here. she's glad she wasn't there, but she also regrets not being there through old, muscle memory guilt.[break][break]
a voice calls out to her, vaguely familiar, and she turns to see Remiel Calcifet standing there. he's rightful to ask that question — her hair is short, she's skinnier, she's immediately standoffish in expression and body language — but she doesn't answer him. she just turns pale at the sight, then asks her own:

She had been kidnapped, too. Like Elise Calcifet had been. Like luka chêne before her. Except the way it had changed her was visually evident; more prominently than the others. Remiel could only imagine how much more had changed internally.[break][break]

But, for now, he was simply happy to see her again. Upon reassuring himself that it is her, the royal steps forward to warmly greet her with a handshake— but stops abruptly when she closes herself off to him and makes her sharp inquiry.[break][break]

The wind he'd hesitantly allowed his sails to catch slipped away to nothing at that instant. Like a castaway at sea, he simply floats there for a moment before speaking.[break][break]

"I was sent here to assist you..." He answers, casting a glance at the large formations of crystals jutting out from their surroundings. "I suppose there must be some interference here, so they couldn't tell you, but Allen found his sister. She didn't make it..." The exiled prince laments.[break][break]

her discomfort is palpable, making the air feel like the hair-raising moments before a lightning strike. she frowns, but that is the extent of her platitudes. [break][break]
"well, we should get started, then." [break][break]a glance at the jeep. [break][break]"it'll be easier to get there on foot, i think."[break][break]
she doesn't particularly like enclosed spaces anymore and she's especially sour at the idea of being in an enclosed space with Remiel Calcifet . there's no invitation or command to follow — she just turns away and starts along the trail as if his presence is a detour to go around instead of a partnership.

Remiel didn't know what to say. Had Annalise been close to Allen or his sister? Should he... apologize? No. Apologize for what? He hadn't launched the HYPER BEAM that had caused the rock slide. He wasn't part of TEAM ROCKET anymore. And, though they hadn't seen each other for some time, he'd already begun paying his dues over the past year.[break][break]

Ultimately, it is Annalise who breaks the awkward silence. "Right." He responds with a nod, sliding the pack off his shoulders as he moves towards the ranger Jeep. When she suggests following the trail on foot instead, however, he stops.[break][break]

Despite doing a double-take of the vehicle when Annalise wasn't looking, to see if it had some sort of leak or a flat tire, he goes along with this suggestion and doesn't question it. "Okay." The royal says, sliding his pack back on with a slight frown.[BREAK][BREAK]

Both he and his Poipole hustle to catch up to her afterward as a cool breeze blows through the tall grass they wade through. "So... how have you been? I haven't seen you around much... have you been back to work for a while?"[BREAK][BREAK]

Remiel Calcifet catches up to her quickly. she doesn't acknowledge him, but she can feel his presence at her side, hear the grass rustle, hear his voice, finally, once the silence becomes too oppressive. she bites the inside of her cheek to disguise her irritation. [break][break]"for a month," she answers too quickly, stepping on the toes of his second question as it leaves his mouth. she doesn't deign to answer the first, trying to smother the conversation before it can take its first breaths. she glances at him, witheringly, then looks ahead. [break][break]
"you were there." because of course he would be, he had been there when —

Remiel doesn't like the look she's given him but remains naive in thinking it is attributed to the assignment at hand rather than himself. Much like she'd ignored his first question, however, the exiled royal stumbles past her second in an attempt to understand Annalise's words. "I was there? Where, exactly?" He reiterates, hastening his pace a little to stubbornly walk side-by-side with her.[BREAK][BREAK]

She couldn't mean when she'd been kidnapped by TEAM ROCKET... could she? Because, unless she'd seen a doppelganger of some sort, she was entirely wrong. Regardless, she needed to know the truth.[break][break]

"I went looking for you, you know. But I was ordered to stay back while others handled it." Because of his former life as an ADMIN. Because of his importance as an asset to the LEAGUE. Even so, guilt swells in his heart before prompting more words to spill an excuse out of his mouth.[BREAK][BREAK]

"There was nothing I could do except provide old intel..."

her silence is a confessional, a place for Remiel Calcifet to project his thrice-over guilt into. her jaw shifts as her teeth grind, as she tries to show patience like ollie morales had asked her to. but the man beside her has no right to absolve himself. it doesn't matter how much he — or anyone — tried, she still suffered. every day. for months. [break][break]and all she ever gets from anyone these days is a desperate search for her approval, for proof that their attempts have meaning. [break][break]
"the war here last month. you were there," is all she says eventually, once she feels like she's not going to explode. her voice is quiet and cold, betraying the embers of anger that can't be stamped out. [break][break]"show me to the cave."

"Oh..." Is all Remiel says, slowing to an unintended stop as he realizes how much of a fool he was for misunderstanding. Eventually, he forces himself to snap out of his internal self-reproach with a light shake of his head. "Y-Yes, I was."[break][break]

Again, however, he ignores the comment outside of the conversation he wishes to have as he hastens to catch up with her. Only this time he's leading the way rather than walking side by side with Annalise. Wondering all the while why she'd stated that.[break][break]

And, only briefly, judging whether his next question would offend as he looks at her.[break][break]

"... Weren't you?"

It's not all that surprising. He'd been told she was still recovering from the trauma of being locked up for so long. There were rumors she might not ever come back. And Remiel still believed that to be true: a part of her would never come back. Not entirely.[break][break]

When she states her determination to be present for the next conflict, the royal nods in understanding. And I'll be there right beside you, he nearly says. But Remiel was no longer the bumbling fool prince he'd been upon arriving in Hoenn. That was probably the last thing she wanted to hear; not a comfort.[break][break]

"We're here."

Together, they veer off the beaten path to head west towards the mouth of a large cave in the distance. As they proceed, the clusters of inactive TERA CRYSTALS surrounding them begin to grow in intensity. Remiel stops once they reach the entrance to pull out a heavy-duty flashlight. His Poipole, in the meantime, carefully begins to scout ahead.[break][break]

Turning to Annalise, Remiel asks:[break][break]

"Are you ready?"

after a stretch of uncomfortable silence, they arrive at the mouth of the cave. the tera crystals jutting out from the plain rock glow in welcome of their presence, but somewhere beyond the allure of the twinkling lights is the persistent smell of decay. she wrinkles her nose. [break][break]"yeah."[break][break]she rolls a poke ball into her palm and releases her houndoom. he needs little instruction to get to work, claws clicking against stone as he puts his nose to the ground and pads further into the cave. the ranger captain follows after, relying on her phone flashlight rather than Remiel Calcifet 's assistance. [break][break]
the houndoom's odor sleuth quickly picks up a scent. they find a body slumped against a rock, barely recognizable after a pokemon attack. annalise stops short, drawing the back of her hand over her nose, then bends down once the rush of nausea wears away. [break][break]delicate fingers work their ranger badge off their tattered uniform.

But Remiel's flashlight sweeps its bright cone of influence across to assist her anyway. Whether she liked it or not, the royal was trying to be helpful. Or, at least, show that he was considering her.[break][break]

That gesture ends when her Houndoom comes across the corpse of a ranger. Pointedly, the flashlight remains fixed on it. It wasn't the first Remiel had seen, of course. It likely wouldn't be the last. But it was impactful nonetheless.[break][break]

Though the same could likely be said for Annalise, however, Remiel is still surprised to see her approach it so easily without a word— and, aside from enduring the smell, hardly any hesitation.[break][break]

The light sweeps back to her feet now as he solemnly asks: "... Who were they?"[break][break]

And the question echoes throughout.

annalise turns the badge over in her hand, running her thumb over the etched grooves of their name. she recognizes it. not with a lot of familiarity, but enough to bring life to the corpse in front of her. he had been just like her — a kid, but with none of her luck, if one could call it that. [break][break]the reverent moment is poisoned by Remiel Calcifet 's presence. her fingers curl tight over the badge at his question, obscuring the letters beneath. she rises to her feet and stares past the brilliance of his flashlight to his vague silhouette. [break][break]"do you even actually care?" [break][break] the flash of hostility in her voice bids her houndoom back from the shadows, hackles raised.

Alarmed by Annalise's outburst, then briefly by her Houndoom's snarl nearby, Remiel finds himself at a loss for words. Perhaps it is because her question continues to echo all around them, repeating the same words as if stuck on the broken loop of a record. At least he can be sure that she had asked him that in the first place.[break][break]

"Of course I do," He ultimately responds, his serious brow tightening slightly. "They are my comrades, too, you know. They have been for the past year. Unlike—" Cutting himself short, Remiel instead takes a deep breath before sighing, lifting a hand to run through his messy black hair.[break][break]

"Nevermind."
