THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

"How much testing have you done?" Nenet had asked moments before they stepped through the rift to Ultra Crater.[break][break]

Zev had finally revealed his Avatar-like powers while defending them from a Megalopolan attack; he knew she had many questions, but they could not converse long over the bloodied corpses. Someone might have stumbled upon them and raised an alarm.[break][break]

Escaping through the portal had been the most logical solution, especially since Nenet wanted to explore the Wilds beyond it.[break][break]

"A considerable amount," Zev had said in reply.[break][break]

As they walked through the dense bamboo forest, he continued, "I've done enough testing to know what I can do in a fight." His spar with bryan delarosa came to mind. "And there's more. I can put out all the lights in an area. A city block, for instance."[break][break]

Ahead, his Hatterene scouted their path, keeping watch for hostile Pokémon.

Nenet's mind reels with the implications of Zev's revelation. She knew of Necrozma in the sense that everyone in Alola knew of Necrozma and its desire to consume light. An odd misfiring of thoughts leads her to wonder if Zev can now photosynthesise as they pass through the thick bamboo thickets of the Ultra Crater.

Shaking her head, she listens instead as Zev describes his newfound abilities. "I would like to run tests of my own," she says in turn. Was his ability all light - from any source - or man made inventions? Necrozma's legends from her native region weren't exactly specific.
[break][break]
A subtle thrumming in the air cuts through Nenet's thoughts, and she reaches out to lightly touch Zev's wrist to halt him. Scanning the bamboo, two stalks that look oddly metallic draws her attention and she asks curiously, "What's that?"

Without waiting for Zev she draws unwittingly closer to a hidden Celesteela. Stooping down to examine the ground, she pulls out a vial from her pack and collects a bit of soil near a growing shoot.
[break][break]
The study of soil wasn't her expertise, but Nenet knew a few pedologists she could email to satisfy her curiosity. A small shoot of bamboo is also transplanted into a second vial and then tucked away into her bag.

Turning to look at Nenet, Zev raised an eyebrow at her. "What kind of tests?"[break][break]

She was a scientist; it was in her nature to explore and investigate the unknown. But she was also the sort of woman who almost let a Minior die as she experimented upon it. What had she said before? That she'd received a warning for ethics violations?[break][break]

Of course, Nenet was also his wife. Zev doubted she wished to harm him. And even if she wanted to, in order to see the extent of his capabilities, he doubted that she could.[break][break]

He stopped walking when she did, drawn to a curious pair of bamboo stalks. The air's thrumming grew louder as she stooped to collect a sample of soil and plant life—enough to concern him.[break][break]

"Nenet, get away from that."[break][break]

But his warning came too late. The ground split with sudden violence as something burst upward, catching the two humans and Zev's Hatterene on its body.[break][break]

A Celesteela, the man realized. The humming was the sound of its jets propelling it upward.[break][break]

"Hold on to me!" he yelled, hooking one arm around Nenet's waist. With his other hand, he grabbed onto the giant Pokémon, using his crystals to anchor him to its thick, steel hide.[break][break]

"Density, composition, melting point. That sort of thing." Nenet rattles off the list in distraction, uncertain if the thrumming noise is coming from the small living shoot in her hand or the odd iron-looking bamboo beside it.

Her brow furrows at Zev's directive but it's too late. One moment Nenet is standing, the next she's clutching Zev for balance as they are throttled into the air on the back of a Celesteela. The sound of metal rending fills the air and heat from the pokemon leaves Nenet wondering if this is how her science career and life are ended in one fell swoop.

Thankfully, the Celesteela seems to recognise something is off and it lands in a rather violent affair in which it slams into the ground and keeps going.

"Let go," Nenet yells, her grip tightening on Zev in the chaos of the landing.

Zev's entire body shuddered with the impact of the landing. He barely heard Nenet's shout over the chaotic din. Thankfully, he too realized that hanging on was likely a death sentence for both of them.[break][break]

He let go of the Celesteela. At the same time, he encased himself from head to foot in his black armor. And, to protect Nenet from injury, he summoned a wide, flat expanse of crystal from his body to carefully cradle her.[break][break]

With a grunt, Zev hit the ground hard and sank halfway up his calves into the earth. He waited until the Celesteela had flown off before retracting his crystals and letting Nenet go. Then, with his Hatterene's help, he pulled himself out of the ground.[break][break]

"Let's not do that again," he said, half-joking and half-serious, as he brushed dirt off his pants. Finally, he took a moment to look around at their new surroundings.[break][break]

His eyes went wide.[break][break]

He, Nenet, and his Pokémon stood at the edge of a large crater. Though it was mostly barren, a small grove of bamboo clustered around an object in its center. They were too far away to see what it was with any clarity, however.[break][break]

"What's that down there?" Zev wondered aloud, pointing.[break][break]

Nenet's attention shifts from eminent death to utter fascination as she finds herself encased in crystal and shielded from the impact. There were so many questions to ask and discoveries to uncover, but she currently lacked the resources to dig both literally and figuratively into Zev's newfound abilities.

"Maybe not together," Nenet concludes ambiguously, her gaze flitting over Zev half-in-the-ground. As Zev was pulled out of the ground she looked around, though it wasn't until his voice drew her attention towards the centre of the crater that her curiosity peaked again.

What was that?

She doesn't wait for Zev, instead trusting him to follow her careful descent down into the crater. The whole of the little grotto almost looked like a shrine. Neatly inscribed on the towering bamboo stalks was a request for items, which Nenet read aloud for Zev's ears behind her.

"I wonder what the objects are for," Nenet murmurs, her voice trailing off as she thinks. Then, "Let's see if we can find shelter of some sort. I'd like to set up some equipment I brought." Secretly she hoped to see more Celesteela in their natural habitat, and debated if they were tied to the requested objects somehow.

Nenet started down into the crater without saying a word, and Zev followed. As she read aloud the inscriptions on the bamboo, he surveyed the area, his senses on high alert for danger. All seemed peaceful in that grove, however.[break][break]

"Not a clue," he said, finally turning his attention to the altar in front of them. "What even is a robe of fire rats?"[break][break]

At Nenet's suggestion, Zev turned around and looked at the wider expanse of the crater but found nothing suitable—at least, not from their vantage point. "Let's head back up top and see what we can find," he suggested.[break][break]

They trudged back up the slope in a different direction to which they had descended. Back on the lip of the crater, he spotted a structure in the distance. Pointing at it with one hand, he touched Nenet's arm to direct her attention.[break][break]

"Over there."

"Sounds like a designation," Nenet muses. "Minior are the Meteor Pokemon, and Lunatone Meteorite," she adds as an after thought. "Elements, I suppose? Fire, water, grass, stone. The jewel's a bit of an oddity."

She follows Zev as she speaks, and the pair crest the top of the crater again. There in the distance Zev points to some sort of structure - possibly something man-made - and she gives a nod.

No sooner than Nenet has taken a single step forwards does one of her pokeballs pop open and her Shadow Nidoqueen's low growl can be heard upon the air. She blinks once in surprise - the pokemon isn't one she's used much before - and asks the Nidoqueen dubiously, "What is it?"

At the very least Zev would have the ability to control the Shadow pokemon, even if Nenet didn't. Or at least that's what she hoped when the Nidoqueen abruptly began to stop towards the structure and bellow a warning cry.

Zev blinked, surprised to see that Nenet, of all people, had a Shadow Pokémon of her own. Asking her about it had to wait, however; the Nidoqueen's aggressive behavior suggested something dangerous in the building ahead.[break][break]

Deciding that his Hatterene was better suited to their defense than scouting ahead, the man released his own Shadow Pokémon, his Nidoking. The two Drill Pokémon exchanged cautious glances, then appeared to reach an understanding.[break][break]

They stomped toward the building with their humans and Hatterene following at a distance. As they drew close, Zev saw it was a cottage of some kind, but in a state of extreme disrepair. Little remained beyond the framework, half the roof, and three of the four walls.[break][break]

A warning screech filled the air. Vines whipped the Nidoking and Nidoqueen as a Victreebell attempted to guard its home, but the two Shadow Pokémon ripped into it with merciless brutality. The Grass-type managed to flee, but not without heavy injuries.[break][break]

Nidoking returned to Zev's side to rumble an all-clear.[break][break]

"Good job," the man said, patting his Pokémon's shoulder. "Stand guard with Hatterene in case other wild Pokémon get close."[break][break]
