It all happens in a split-second, a heartbeat of time.

[break][break] This version of Ollie doesn't know the things that the other does. This version of Ollie doesn't understand, not yet, what she is capable of.

[break][break] He is there for her regardless, fingers intertwined tightly as the heat of Moltres billows forth. It is breathtaking, watching a God be so close, and even moreso to watch it all happen right in front of them. It's not Ollie who is chosen, but he feels blessed all the same, staring up at the phoenix as it raises it's wings to the sky and bleeds gold and red across the flaming summer sky.

[break][break] Ollie feels useless to it - to her - and yet vitally important all at the same time, left to do nothing but stare and stare and stare as he breathes it all in.

[break][break] "Ollie."

[break][break] Her words pull him back the present, and he tightens his grip onto hers. Eyes of evergreen bear into hers, holding strong and steady. "Pen, I'm right here."

[break][break] 'I'll always be here.'

[break][break] Rather than meeting him, her eyes find that of a similar green. Except rather than emerald it is jade-green hues that feel foreign to Ollie, detached and separated. His grips tightens on her, as if holding her to him by that tether will somehow keep them close. As if he can keep her here with him, just by standing there.

[break][break] "Farhan?" he hears his voice echo, muddled with confusion, as he tries to come to an understanding. Blurry memories of that dating sim race towards him, combined with the swirling thoughts of path not taken. willow atkins had been sweet to him then. Even the younger version of PENELOPE LIVY had been adoring.

[break][break] But he thought about Farhan. The kindler of Mt. Chimney. He worked with Lavaridge's Rangers.

[break][break] "I remember."

[break][break] Her eyes don't stray from it though, and it pains him. It pains him the control that it has over her and he wants nothing more than to tear her away from it.

[break][break] But she tears from him instead.

[break][break] 'Penny —'

[break][break] He wants to protest, but doesn't.

[break][break] A sharp whistle and his Pidgeot comes to attention, the sunlight reflecting off the mountain's molten lava painting the pokemon amber. Making him look more like his late Staraptor than Saffron.

[break][break] The Mega Armband around his bicep glows, illuminating the League symbol alongside his Ranger insignia. Feathers glow topaz-gold as the bird MEGA-EVOLVES, a shriek echoing through the air as a shimmer of PROTECT erects around them both. Greedy hands in the shape of molten fire reach for the pair, but the Head Ranger's sharp call protects them from the damage.

He doesn't feel it.

[break][break] Whether due to ignorance or his own cowardice, ollie morales is immune to the charred remains of ENVY spreading like molten lava over his PROTECT. The desire to protect her rings true, fiercely bright in his emerald eyes, as his Pidgeot fights valiantly to maintain the barrier.

[break][break] But those demon hands spread wide across the barrier, causing meager cracks in the edges, that grow bigger and bigger with each passing minute.

[break][break] Aiming to suffocate them both.

[break][break] Protectively, Ollie stands before the Councilwoman in a stubborn effort to defend her. Flashes of a Galarian memory ring true, a time long ago when he had been her protector. Even now, he remains as her shield, even as madness leaks through, splitting the armor with it's heat and loathsome hatred.

[break][break] "Don't give up, Saff! Hold it!"

[break][break] Between him and Penny strikes a form that is a combination of their love and loyalty, the thing that binds. It is the thing that has tied them through the years of abandonment, of suffering, of torment. Gold and red weave together, wrapping around them and providing strength.

[break][break] Fire collides, splashing hot against the barricade, wearing it thin.

[break][break] The Head Ranger grits his teeth, as though he can feel the flames that lick the surface of the barrier. As if the influence of that malicious God are reaching out to him too. Pulling him, tugging him, dragging him down into it's dangerous depths.

[break][break] 'You think you're a hero.'

[break][break] 'You think you'll save her.'

[break][break] 'But all you are is selfish.'

[break][break] Just like that, the PROTECT shatters.

[break][break] "Urgh."

[break][break] The RUINATION burns. Lashes of fire wrap around his legs, sliding upwards as it burns a path through his clothes. It chokes him. The RUINATION is unforgiving in it's torture.

[break][break] "Penny...!" he gasps, reaching out in an attempt to reach her. But he can't.

[break][break] He can't, he can't, he can't.

[break][break] RUINATION chokes him.

[break][break] She chokes him, until he can no longer breathe.
