Down he goes after her. She’s his own white rabbit, plunging him down. Past, present, and future all melt together here. Beneath the surface, there is no such thing as time. Time is a human construct. Foreign here. There is only existence – an existence not meant for them.[break][break]
She sinks, falling ever deeper. He dives after her. Water beats against his lungs. He cries out for her. Eris, Eris, Eris! Silent words. Terrified cries. Fear. Fear that he will lose her. That they will be lost. Outside of the simulation, whoever monitors their vitals sees a spike in Navy’s heart rate.[break][break]
He grabs her. Down in the darkness, the only comfort he can offer her is his body. He never sees the creature they look for – this Azelf. The hunt for Azelf is not for him. All he’s here to do is keep her safe. She can do the rest. All he has to do is swim up. Muster his own will – his own resolve. Feeling it burning against his chest, he tries to swim up.[break][break]
The light seems to be growing dimmer. Dimmer. Dimmer. His vision blurry. What a peaceful way to die, this would be.[break][break]
But not yet. Not while she has to find this sleeping Azelf. Not while so much is at stake.[break][break]
He swims until he has nothing left in his lungs.

At least he thinks this is Alola. Someone that grew up poor like he did wouldn’t know if this was really Alola. Given everything else they’ve seen on this trip, he figures that this must, in fact, be the real thing.[break][break]
“Eris, you alright? Eris?” He asks, knowing while he asks the question that she isn’t. They dove into a lake. Only now, after the fact, when he is fully in charge of his own will, does he put two and two together.[break][break]
And while he does that, a bird tilts its eyes from the sky and looks at them.

They carry in them profound sadness. Within the gray is defeat, despair, death. He’s been crying. Little red marks line where he’s recently taken blows. Many are on his knuckles. Others are on his face. Above his right eyebrow, where Eris might have noticed a scar before, is an open bleeding wound.[break][break]
“Fuck…” The boy sobs. “Fuck, I just wish I could leave.” In the other room, through a cracked door, a young child watches a movie. Eris does not know this boy, not as he is now. A Pokemon battle from Galar plays out across the screen.[break][break]
When those gray eyes turn to him, they take on the make of gunmetal. Gripping the edge of the sink, he stands up. Turning, he walks through a house. It’s small. Dirty. Cluttered. A woman’s touch tries to keep this place in order, but it proves a difficult task.[break][break]
He’s in the garage. The hood of a trunk is popped. Diving into the complicated mechanics beneath, he finds what he’s looking for. It looks innocuous – another part amidst a sea of technology. Something not thought of until it’s needed.[break][break]
A trembling hand grabs a knife.[break][break]
Hesitation stops his hand. Once the knife slips where it needs to go, there is no going back. What is done cannot be undone. A bell, once rung, can never be unrung. Time marches on. Things only ever happen one way.[break][break]
“Michael.” A monster calls from another room. “The fuck did you go?”[break][break]
It steels his resolve. A man must slay monsters. His hand slips under the brake line. Once punctured, fluid drains. It will not be noticed.[break][break]
Chucking the knife away, he turns to meet the monster.[break][break]
He’s tall, taller than the boy. Looming over him, the monster has hateful eyes. They, too, are gray. Pushing his son out of the way, he walks into the garage.[break][break]
“Going out to fish. Take care of your brother.”[break][break]
“I will, dad. I will.” He will keep that promise until the day Gabriel Navidson dies.[break][break]
“MARY!” The monster cries. “Mary, you’re coming with me!” A meek woman walks out of the kitchen. She’s blonde haired. Once, she was beautiful. High class. Now, she has the look of a cowed animal. She doesn’t protest, Mother Mary.[break][break]
“Mom, no. Mom. Don’t. Don’t go.” His voice catches in his throat. He’s begging her. He can’t give up the game. Can’t tell her. He’s so close to slaying the monster.[break][break]
“It will be alright, Michael.” Her sad smile tells all. She thinks she’s sparing him. By her suffering, the brothers are given an easy day. Her green eyes look to his torn brow. Acceptance turns to a pool of sadness. She caresses his forehead. Turns. Leaves.[break][break]
The monster pulls her into the truck with him. As he drives away, not yet knowing he drives right into hell, he consigns his wife to fall with him.[break][break]
“…fuck.” A boy collapses, crying as he realizes what he has done.

And yet, she follows Navy's steps. She watches as he looks through the hood of a vehicle, she's seen her own father work in places like this before. Not once has she seen him using a knife to fix something. It raises many red flags in her head, but her voice is nothing amidst this dream. This memory, she assumes.[break][break]

A voice roars through the corridor, one that causes her to flinch. He towers over them. He glares at Navy, shoves him aside. He doesn't look at her but she averts her gaze regardless, her hands knitting together as she tries to press herself against the wall. Navy begs for his mother not to leave, she feels her own heart wavering when she hears his voice.[break][break]

She wishes she could grab his mother's hand. She tries, if only because she prays that she could help in some way to ease his pain. But she is a spectre, a ghost inside a withered memory; Her hands just slip through like wisps of smoke. The door slams, the engine roars and Navy sobs.[break][break]

Family isn't the same for everyone.[break][break]

Raziel Beckett had warned her as much. Isaac Merlo never liked to talk about his. Now, she'd seen why Navy rarely brought his up.[break][break]

And as she continues to watch him drown in his tears, unable to offer any words or comforting hug, she too begins to cry.

What he sees through her eyes does little but affirm that he is right to oppose the volatile. How funny that a man like that would talk about justice, like he understands what that word means. Justice is not a matter for gods and those who champion them, but for men. Justice only exists when mankind makes it for themselves.[break][break]
There is no justice in how he treats her, or in how he makes her cry. There is only the machinations of a cruel man, too consumed by hatred and fanaticism.[break][break]
The same fire that always threatens to consume him. The flame he fights back to protect lost children.[break][break]
He wakes up on the cold floor of the room housing this simulated universe. Somewhere along the way, they really did pass out. He finds himself wondering about what he saw. Stumbling up, he looks at her with tired, worried eyes. He’s terrified she will dive right back into the simulation, there to try and consort with Azelf once again.[break][break]
“Eris. Let’s give it a bit before we go back in.” He speaks nervous words, wondering what it is she saw in there, given how vivid his own memory of her life was.
