His first case. Well, “officially” at least. He’s been an independent private eye in Hoenn for awhile, until now. A talent left in the shadows, purposefully avoidant of the ever-burning spotlight. It’s a brand new chapter in his life, and Tai’s excited to fill out the blank pages with something fresh. He watches the seconds tick away on his smart-watch, patiently awaiting for whichever superior they sent to be with him on his very first day.[break][break]

He’s far from home. This isn’t his jurisdiction, his rodeo, or his town. All the same, Dewford’s sheriff is here. He is here on special request from the higher ups to show a rookie the ropes.[break][break]
Once upon a time, he was Tai Liu. A charismatic detective, a hometown hero, one of Hoenn’s native sons. It had beaten him into this shape, blessed him with wisdom. He hopes, should Tai’s stay on the stage prove long, that his wisdom does not demand so high a price.[break][break]
“Yo.” Is the informal greeting given by the older man to the younger. “Nice to meet you. Liu, right?” The sheriff adjusts his hat, giving Tai a small, humorless smile. Between the cold and the task set before them, there isn’t much humor to be had.[break][break]
“First day on the job, huh? What made you decide to throw your hat in with the League? More money to be made in the private sector.” As a man who had once been a private investigator himself, he speaks from experience. Were it not for his AQUA contract, he’d barely be keeping the lights on serving the public Goode.

Upon the arrival of his senior, Tai straightens out his posture, attempting to fit the dignified part of “detective” more. “Yes; Tai Liu. It’s great to finally meet you, sir.”[break][break]
Propositioned with a question right off the back, he actually takes care and time in answering. He supposes that the recent chaotic events in Hoenn made him want to step out of the shadows. Take a stance, make a change- if only one could be so heroic. Truth be told his deductive talents were wasted in his small town (no offense to it, he adored the warm climate and locals!) But Tai knew he was destined for more. Had to be.[break][break]
“I figured a little tutorship and guidance wouldn’t hurt. With the exception of my Pokemon I’ve been on my own for way too long. I figured I can be more of a service to the league and the citizens this way.”[break][break]
He smiles.[break][break]
“But let’s not waste anymore daylight on pleasantries. What’s our assignment? I was only told to show up.”[break][break]

“Uhuh.” In the shadows of his wide-brimmed hat, the sheriff’s eyes carry a deductive glint. His tone is one of polite skepticism. People sign up to help the League for a thousand different reasons. At least Tai officially signed up instead of running into a crisis like a Torchic with his head cut off. Hoenn has far too many would-be heroes, martyrs, and lone wolves.[break][break]
“Well, got yourself a milk run today. We get a lot of reports about Rocket activity here in New Mauville. Most of the time, we don’t find much of anything.” Pulling out a pokeball, Navy tosses it onto the ground. Voyager, an overgrown puppy of an Arcanine, barks and immediately decides Tai is his friend. The dog, unnaturally warm, tries to nuzzle up to the League’s newest peacekeeper.[break][break]
“Rule one of these kinds of jobs: don’t expect much. Most of the time, we’re just snooping around after Rocket’s long gone. Making sure they haven’t stolen anything big, sabotaged anything. We’ve caught a few saboteurs but nothing big for a while.” His lips hint at a cynical smile.[break][break]
“Welcome to the side of the angels, Liu. Our motto: wait and see. Followed closely by nothing happened.”

Pokemon more often than not are good judges of character. So when his boss’s Arcanine comes up to him out of the blue, friendly and demanding attention — something locked away, deep within himself, swells up in emotion. On the outside however Tai’s composed as can be. So, maybe he is still good — not as tainted as his heart believes himself to be. Gloved hands scratch at the fire type’s mane, a hint of a smile on his lips as he listens to the assignment given to him.[break][break]
Jealousy surges from another source, though, as a prissy Mawile pops out from the pokeballs attached to Tai’s belt. Millie (his Mawile) clings to his leg, the jaws on its head softly vibrating. She’s excited. [break][break]
“I hear your motto loud and clear, sir.” A hand rests atop Mawile’s head, stilling the Pokemon. “Even if today ends up uneventful I hope to do my best nonetheless.”[break][break]
Just enough to prove himself, anyway. He’s far from an overachiever.

“Sir?” The word is spoken in a snort. Only after the sound has been made does he have time to register how rude that might be. “Navy’s fine. Gotta admit…hard to get used to people calling me sir.” While he adds that addendum, his eyes fall upon Millie. Voyager has decided he likes Millie as well. A whistle recalls the Arcanine to his side.[break][break]
“This time last year, I was a private eye, too.” Time changes, chips away, forces you to become the person you were supposed to be. Hoenn has a habit of stripping people down to their essentials, shaping them in steel and dragonfire.[break][break]
“Funny how things can change.” With those words, they set off through the power plant. To call it a power plant is to vastly understate how large this facility is. Wild Pokemon nest here. Secrets unknown to the sheriff lurk far beneath the surface.[break][break]
“We’ll be looking near the bottom. Got some unusual readings or something.” Navy leads the way. Voyager stays close by his side, sniffing the air. Only when they near the elevator does the great fire dog growl.[break][break]
Voyager’s bark signals the impending ambush. A Perrserker lunges from the shadows near the elevator. Behind him is a swarm of Galarian Meowth.[break][break]
The Arcanine is quick to offer Millie a helping hand. Fire is required to temper steel, after all.[break][break]
“Usually the rangers are better at keeping the top level clear.” Navy muses, seemingly unperturbed by the ambush.

“Navy it is then.” Tai Liu uses honorifics as a sign of respect, whether he feels they’re deserving of them or not. Less he be caught in hot water. In this case however, the man before him seems more than capable enough. He proves that when a sudden ambush takes them by surprise. [break][break]
A horde of GALARIAN MEOWTH and a PERRSERKER appear at the scene. Did they live in the elevator shafts by chance? Sadly he had no time to wonder or find an answer to his question as they’re caught in the heat of battle.[break][break]
Mawile’s jaws chomp repeatedly. A clear sign that she’s ready to fight and help. The HELPING HAND does well in empowering her, as the FAIRY WIND she unleashes at the horde is much stronger and more pungent than usual. It surrounds the area in pulsating waves. Tai smiles, gloved hand propped to his hip.[break][break]
“Ah, well. They can’t control them all, can they? Nothing we can’t handle.”

“Always forget how scary Mawile can be.” A dose of irony to lighten the mood, given where Mawile are found. Granite Cave is host to whole families of the species. “Steel and fairy. Strong as hell.” He’s reminded of another Pokemon, one they call the fairy king’s sword.[break][break]
Voyager is concerned with other matters. Reality claims his attention. Prowling behind Millie, the Arcanine snarls at the Meowth. His eyes find their leader, the Perrserker. Voyager so rarely plays this role, but he plays it here. Flames flare along his back. He looks the part of an intimdating legend.[break][break]
Perrserker decides that the best offense leads him and his troops away from the duo. A few of the Meowth fainted from the wind and the snarl. Warriors carry the fallen back with him. They retreat.[break][break]
“Even if they’re just Meowth…good to see you keep calm under pressure.” Navy walks into the elevator, assuming Tai is coming with him. He presses a button to take them far, far down below. Down where new world machines meet old world blues.[break][break]
“You’d be surprised how many people lose their shit at the first sign of trouble.”

“Mawile has been with me the longest, but she can be a little difficult to handle.”[break][break]
Meaning, the steel type only listens to Tai and is jealous if anyone else tries zoning in on her territory. With the threat now exterminated, Tai and Pokemon follow his superior inside the elevator. [break][break]
Descending down into the unknown, oddly enough the mechanical whirl of the elevator is like music to his ears. The ginger leans his back against the side, enjoying the ride. Mawile sticks close to his side, practically glued to it but he’s used to it by now.[break][break]
The lighting is limited down here, but there’s a sheen to his silver eyes. One that carries unreadable emotion. Same for the smile on his face.[break][break]
“You could say I’m a lot like the steel-type. Under enough pressure I might bend, but I'll never break.” [break][break]
As they approach the bottom floor Tai sets a gloved hand atop the Mawile’s black head, calming her with ease. Did she sense more Pokemon perhaps?

“I can tell.” He says it as a compliment. “Hoenn breaks plenty of people, if you stay on the stage long enough. Gotta learn to bend, go with the flow of the river.” An echo of a sentiment expressed to Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, another young officer paired with someone old before his time.[break][break]
Outside the elevator shaft, Pokemon are running away from something. Not just little ones, either. Navy sees an Excadrill press through metal, rushing from an unseen threat. The pressure is palpable.[break][break]
“…huh…” A soft exhale, a hand falling down to his gunbelt of pokeballs. Reflexes, honed to a razor edge. Eyes forward. There’s a familiar smell in the air.[break][break]
“Stay close.” Turning on a headlight, he faces forward, starts down the way. Voyager circles his trainer, big eyes forward. Even the friendly dog is quiet, waiting for the inevitable release of the tension.[break][break]
“You…keep up with the news? ‘Bout what’s been going on down in Dewford?” It’s as diplomatic a way he can phrase it without wholly spilling the beans as he can manage while they walk through the depths of this man-made monument to the electric age.

He heeds the older man’s warning and stays close, the same goes for his Mawile. Not only is it dark, but the entire place sends a chill down his space. An abandoned space with a knack for breeding trouble. There’s enough pressure to break his neck if he were to step the wrong way. One wrong move here and it could be fatal. [break][break]
Truth be told, going deep down in here just the two of them felt a little foolish — but who was he to disregard orders from a superior? That wouldn’t look good.[break][break]
“Honestly, no. I’ve been off the grid for awhile, engrossed in a previous case. So I didn’t have time to check in with recent events.” In general, Tai tends to be out of touch with people and the world that houses them. “What’s happened in Dewford?”

They are fortunate they are near a wall. Neither is injured when the surge of dyna energy makes the creature grow to absurd proportions. It breaks through several floors of the deep facility, roaring down at them.[break][break]

Sadly, Tai doesn’t have much time to truly take in his surroundings and embed it into memory. Within a blink in the eye the situation turns dire. An ominous pink glow fills the room and sends a shiver down his spine, but the officer smiles in the face of danger, welcomes it even. [break][break]
Mawile’s jaw snaps in anger, ready to fight despite the danger being off the charts, mimicking her trainer’s inner desire for a fight. When a spike gets too close to her trainer and his superior officer, it’s massive jaw bites down and breaks it in half cleanly, like cutting into a stick of butter rather than solid stone.[break][break]
It's a good thing Mawile isn’t his only ace in the hole, either.[break][break]
“I’ll take you up on that offer, Navy. It doesn’t reflect very well on me leaving you down here. We’re in this together, just tell me what to do.”

“Get out every Pokemon you’ve got. Stay on the move. The one advantage we’ve got is speed. They can’t move. Voyager and the rest of my boys’ll draw its attention. Follow up, strike when you can. Mawile here’s a good choice. Our guy here’s part dragon. She’s a natural dragonkiller.” Dragonslayer begins glowing, calling down a spotlight on itself. The floating blade flies off, shooting like an arrow away from the group.[break][break]
Silver Bullet and Voyager charge. It’s exhilarating, like living through a memory. He has to win, or they’re both dead.[break][break]
“Let me set you up!” A roaring pulse of draconic energy flies over their heads, aimed right at the Aegislash. Voyager is consumed by fire, throwing himself at the supermassive steel dragon in a flare blitz. Silver Bullet spews flames, creating an inferno along the chassis of the behemoth. Navy cuts to the left on his horse, Voyager to the right.[break][break]
It leaves Tai and his team open to go on the offensive, however they please.
