Eko flipped through her documents one last time. Everything seemed in order. There were a few questions that needed verifying - just to ensure they had everything up to date at the museum. She readily volunteered for the task because of the Gym leader's renown for racing and, as she read over the documents the week prior, her excitement grew. A list of challengers who had selected to race and were now record holders was particularly interesting.

She'd seen the promotional videos of the gym that were floating around but there was something different about being here, in the lobby, watching the trainers and staff flit here or there and taking in the scale of everything.

She fiddled with her pen as she waited, tracing over the gold Mauville Gym symbol that adorned the top. She thought she could call herself a fan – if there were fans of particular gyms - and had a small collection of Mauville gym merchandise. This pen seemed the least obtuse thing could bring and maybe it was a bit much to bring it regardless, but it felt right to have something a little special.

While it was far from cold, jackets were needed outside. Mauville was far north enough that it would occasionally get temperatures not too far above freezing, akin to a late fall day in Johto.

Several minutes later, Josh's scheduler on duty, ANDREW WEISS, called Eko's name to come to the front desk. "Eko Darling ? The Leader will see you now. Follow the signage to the Main Sector. He'll be--" The receptionist stopped after turning to open the sliding doors leading to the Racing Grounds. The Gym Leader was visible through the glass, stepping down from the back of what may have been the largest Jolteon Eko had ever seen. It had to be nearly as large as was genetically possible for the species.

Noticing the white-haired female, Josh withdrew the yellow, saddled Eeveelution and opened the doors himself. "Eko! Great to see you after the tournament," the Gym Leader greeted. "I wasn't quite sure what your appointment was about when I read the notes. How can I help today?"

Eko perked up when her name was called. She jumped up from her seat and crossed the short distance between herself and the scheduler. She nodded and had just started jotting down “main sector” in her notes when the scheduler stopped. Her gaze lifted curiously until they took in the Gym leader and his massive Jolteon.

Eko had seen some large pokemon variants during her time – especially in the war. It seemed, at the time, like the military units had access to some sort of pokemon growth hormone. It was just good breeding, any higher up would explain as they laughed off the idea. Now, with her background in military history, she had no doubt they had been using growth hormones. War pushed people to do funny things like that.

The thoughts cleared as Josh opened the door and greeted her. ”Ah, yeah,” The tournament where she and Kshana got absolutely destroyed. She gave a polite laugh, mostly to get the thought off her mind. ”It’s good to see you too. And thanks for the pizza, it hit the spot after all that battling.” She shifted her folders. ”I just wanted to come run some questions by you, make sure we had all the records up to date at the Museum. We like to keep archives of everything and if it’s inaccurate, what use is it?” She shrugged at the idea of useless information.

”Are those the racing tracks?” Her eyes hungrily took in the area behind Josh.

The vast majority of Josh's Pokémon had come from Distortions, fleeting connections between Hoenn and an ancient past. In that world, several of them would have been known as Alphas, their red eyes striking terror into the hearts of all who witnessed them. Removed from the Distortions, that status, and their menacing gaze, vanished from them, but not their immense size. Blinky was the one exception: she had been bred to her enormous size through countless generations of toil and trouble. Thankfully, Eevee were easy to move on the open market, both being a popular house pet and Trainers oftentimes desiring them in batches of eight.

"They are," Josh answered, gesturing toward the nearby Sectors 1 and 6, full of relatively easy courses with a single exception. "I can try to clear some stuff up for you. Would you prefer to ask questions while riding through the concourse, or would you prefer my office upstairs?"
