The giant snake flicks her tongue methodically, staring motionless at the opponent ahead of her. She's a beast built for hunting, so perfectly suited to battle she takes to it in an instant. [break][break]

Baki regards the woman coolly. [break][break]

"Chêne, was it? What's that, Kalosian?" [break][break]

Guess people from all over the world were coming to fight in a tourney like this now. [break][break]

Then again, it hadn't been long since she'd arrived here herself. Less than a year. How time moves... the thought's hard to wrap her head around, in no small part due to that twenty year detour. [break][break]

In contrast to the woman standing opposite her, the energy Luka exudes is the nervous and bubbling sort, like a champagne cork just about to pop. She bounces on her toes as she sizes up the pair, and the fact that they’re at a type disadvantage isn’t lost on her.[break][break]

Maybe it’ll still be okay? She’d like to think she and Sugar have come a long way but truthfully, it’s only Sugar who’s really grown much. Thankfully in a competition like this, she can allow her partner to take the reins and show off without her trainer holding her back. Such thinking is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and frankly it’s a little sad that Luka hasn’t realized that yet.[break][break]

”Mmm, that’s right! And your accent is…from Kanto?” It’s comforting to know that even after being in Hoenn so long, her little party trick hasn’t faded at all. ”It’s a pleasure to meet you! And, erm…t-to battle you, I suppose!”[break][break]

She smiles and hopes her nerves don’t show in the gaps between her teeth. ”Let’s both do our best, then! Good luck!”[break][break]

The Arbok is more than ready to comply, opening her jaws wide as she plunges toward the Sylveon. Venom awaits, to break her down. To savor it, as the fae is brought low by the weakness of its own sugary-sweet blood.[break][break]

"Well, Hoenn is a special place." For better or worse, it seems to sink it's teeth into everyone who comes here. "If you've managed to find a home here, I'm very happy for you!"[break][break]

She grins again, and in that smile is everything that Tsubaki seems to hate. Luka doesn't seem to notice, and frankly, she'd be quite bummed to learn that her brand of obnoxious cheerfulness has no power here. But not everyone is here to make friends— some are simply here to battle, and it would be rude of her not to proceed.[break][break]

"Ah...r-right, right! Okay Sugar, I'm counting on you!"[break][break]

Her opponent strikes first, and with a powerful attack right off the bat. "M-melt?! Ew...S-sugar, try to avoid it! Use, um..." [break][break]

Ugh! It's grade school stuff, but she can never remember what poison types are weak against. "Try shadow ball!"[break][break]

As the serpent's gaping jaws near, Sugar tries to elegantly dart out of the way. She slides underneath the undulating body and aims a bursting shadow ball upwards, hoping to knock back the Arbok just far enough to avoid the fangs that yearn to sink into her flesh.

Hungry eyes imagine what it would be to swallow the Sylveon whole, to hold it there til weakness takes it. Hatred and anger behind a glassy glare, the Arbok rears back and exposes her belly. Muscles underneath ripple, and light dances off her scales, making the face seem like it's alive. [break][break]

Monster? Luka and her Sylveon blink in identical astonishment. They’ve been called many things before, but never a monster![break][break]

Luka almost wants to apologize- which is ridiculous, because isn’t this what battling is all about? It seems that Sugar is slightly taken aback as well, because she isn’t able to escape the glare in time. Suddenly, her legs seem locked in place, and even her rippling ribbons seem to freeze. Wide, aquamarine eyes stare into crimson red and yellow, unable to tear herself away.[break][break]

“Sugar! What are you- c-come on, we can’t falter now! You can do it!”[break][break]

Her trainer’s voice seems to help snap her out of it. With great effort, Sugar attempts to break free of the spell. However, she’s a sitting duck for whatever the Arbok’s next attack might be...

"Hah! This is it! Go for the throat, Sumi! Don't hold back!"[break][break]

The venom that pours from Baki's own lips is more potent than even her darling snake's. Young as she is, she's intimidating. She's either very well practiced at this, or putting on a stunning performance acting the villain. [break][break]

A pained cry echoes throughout the arena as venomous fangs meet their mark. Luka gasps in horror, hands clasped in front of her mouth as Sugar struggles and thrashes within the Arbok's coils.[break][break]

She has half a mind to recall her Sylveon now. Her fingers curl against a love ball, but giving up now feels almost humiliating. The woman across the field is already looking down on the both of them...stubbornly, she doesn't want to give her any more ammunition.[break][break]

"I-it's not over yet! You can do it, Sugar! Fight back!"[break][break]

That's about as intimidating as fighting words from her will ever get. But to Luka's credit there's quite a bit of fire behind them, and it seems that Sugar shares her passion. Despite the odds being against her, and the life being very literally drained from her body, the fairy manages to twist herself within the Arbok's grasp and fires off a weak psyshock.[break][break]

It's far from a brutal, game-changing move. But if they're lucky, it might just be enough to get her out of the serpent's grip.

Baki smiles widely, stepping forward as she watches the battle unfold. Her own fangs glimmer in a flash of lightning.[break][break]

"That's the tenacity I like to see! Fight back, like a cornered animal! Don't go down without a fight!"[break][break]

The shoots forth like a bullet. The arbok's rippling body wraps around the Sylveon, threatening to crush it in her embrace. No mercy shown to her prey. [break][break]

Is this what she wants? To watch them struggle and fight for survival? It's a brutal mindset, or maybe Luka is just too soft in comparison. Despite all they've been through, Hoenn hasn't been able to beat all the kindness out of her.[break][break]

She frowns. She wants to prove this woman wrong, to show her that they're tougher than she assumes. But she also can't stand to see Sugar hurt like this, bitten and then pursued like prey. Though her Sylveon manages to escape the Arbok's grasp for a moment and struggles to get away, she's breathless and caught again almost as quickly.[break][break]

Her fingers grip Sugar's love ball, knuckle-white as the Sylveon fires yet another psyshock in a last-ditch effort to escape those crushing coils.

The girl's demeanor suddenly shifts. The arbok releases her grip and the Sylveon is called back to her ball. Sumire bares her fangs angrily, but she relents to her master's voice, returning to her own ball.[break][break]

The charade has gone on long enough. The show's finished, well and truly over. [break][break]

Putting on that face for the sake of a show, acting the heel even for a short while, it leaves a bad taste in the girl's mouth. Though, truth be told, she'd gotten into it until she saw the woman's face. [break][break]

"... Good fight, Chene. Got a little carried away. All part of the show, hope you understand."[break][break]

She speaks low as she gets close enough to hold out her hand and offer the woman peace. Her eyes focus on the crowd that's gathered, and she quickly makes her way off the battlefield. [break][break]

"Nice meetin' you. Keep yourself safe."[break][break]
