The sun was starting to set on Lilycove City, a sign that the first day of the tournament was winding down. It was Shalin's last chance to move up the standings. She needed it if she wanted to make Day Two; she was right on the bubble. If she lost this match, she was out of the tournament.

As the Captain made dinner arrangements on her phone, an announcement blared over the venue's loudspeakers:

"Attention all Vital City Tournament participants. Pairings are up for round twelve. Pairings are up for round twelve. This is the final round of Day One of the event."

Shalin gasped when she saw that she had not only been paired up, but her opponent was ollie morales . If she won, it would do wonders for her tiebreakers. That was tall ask; Ollie had a better record than she did, meaning she was likely an underdog in the match.

Taking her place at her assigned arena, she clicked her Poké Ball's switch, the Shiny Beedrill she was well-known for appearing before the Head Ranger. Her wings remained silent out of respect for their exchange of pleasantries. "Oh hi boss!" Shalin greeted, half-joking with the League official. "You won't demote me if I win, right?"

Ollie had already made a name for himself as a Ranger. There were very few Rangers that also did well on the battle circuit, as the skill sets needed for the position had very little overlap. Before she could even wish Ollie luck, the horn sounded, signaling the match to start. The giant wasp's wings drowned out all other noise around them, reminding Shalin why she wore earplugs when she sat astride the venomous insect.

Queen Zing was quick to get on the offensive, the Shiny Beedrill circling around Tofu before reaching toward the small electric-type and throwing a flurry of POISON JABS toward its back. Any one of those might leave the Pikachu with a burning sensation. If the entire volley landed, perhaps it would feel like it was on fire from the inside out!

[attr="class","textbody"] Although rangers didn't always have battle experience under their belt, that didn't always mean they were bad battlers. In fact, that was a rumor that Ollie was trying to quash.

[break][break] Rangers could hold their own in battle too, just as much as any other.

[break][break] The POISON JABS were quick, so Tofu had to be quicker. The Pikachu immediately started up a TRAILBLAZE, using the heightened speed to dodge the poisonous jabs that were aimed towards him, then attempted to leap atop the Beedril's pincers to bite the pokemon at closer range.

Ollie's way of thinking was correct. There were all sorts of renowned Rangers on the force that were also known for their impressive battling resumes. Most notably, Josh Devlin was a talented Gym Leader, and Callan Young was a former member of the Elite Four. He himself was proving his own mental point, Tofu leaping out of the way and up the giant sting that Queen Zing tried to skewer the Pikachu with.

The whiffed thrusts of her foreleg stings left the Beedrill in a vulnerable position, Shalin's Pokémon desperately trying to get them unstuck from the floor. With the bug-type immobile and Tofu looking to chomp at her face, the green insect had one choice: to tilt her wings down and churn them at full speed. If the TAILWIND didn't blow the Pikachu away, the vibration reflecting from the ground would numb his muscles and render him unable to hold on!

The Head Ranger's Pikachu was one tough Pokémon, able to avoid sting after sting. Backed into a corner, Shalin had little choice. She had to TERASTALLIZE Queen Zing. Hurling her TERA ORB toward the wasp, a pyramid of Tera Crystals enveloped Shalin's partner, giving her the protections afforded of the GROUND-type.

A tan, crystalline body surrounded her and her stings. The two white, conic weapons whirled like a Rhydon's horn, their wielder thrusting them toward the Pikachu. Were it to connect, the DRILL RUN would be a nasty blow, getting the Captain back in the match!

At last, an opening! The recoil from the DRILL RUN gave Queen Zing the breathing room she needed to distance herself from Tofu's retaliatory DISCHARGE. The wasp's newly-formed crystalline body helped as well, allowing her to repel sparks from the glowing dome Ollie's Pokémon was surrounded with.

Keeping away from the small foe, the green wasp took aim at the foe's red cheeks, trying to disrupt the current flowing through them with a venomous TWINEEDLE pair. Were they to strike, those red sacs would be turning purple before long!

[break][break] The Beedrill was fast — too fast. At close distance, Tofu didn't stand a chance against the other pokemon's TWIN NEEDLE attack.

[break][break] "Hey!" Ollie shouted in an attempt to get the electric-type's attention. "Get away before you're poisoned!"

[break][break] Tofu ducked his head in an attempt to dodge the attack. One of them needled him the side, sending him barreled towards the ground. The Pokemon winced as he felt the poison flood through him, before releasing a DISARMING VOICE in attempt to put some distance between the both of them.

The power of Dynamax was staggering, but it came with a severe disadvantage; a complete lack of mobility. Queen Zing took the brief wincing motion as an opportunity to back away from the Pikachu's DISARMING VOICE, its sound waves less intense.

Queen Zing didn't need to strike anymore. All she had to do was fly circles around her foe until she keeled over from the venom. That was what her instincts told her. Looking at her VITAL GEAR and comparing the rate of stamina loss to the timer, Shalin knew she had to land one more blow for that plan to work. She ordered her Pokémon to fly above the electric-type and dive into Tofu. Prepared to POISON JAB the giant, she did as Shalin requested, amplifying their piercing power through natural gravity.

The stings found the Pikachu's soft skin, their venom coursing through the electric-type's insides. Her proximity, though, made it impossible to evade the foe's DISCHARGE, the wasp's wings struggling to hold her aloft.

With her condition weak and the slightest jolt of electricity putting her at risk of going over the brink, Shalin made a gesture for her Beedrill to stop attacking. Instead, she created a weak TAILWIND at her back, doing her best to keep as much distance as possible while the venom did its work.

[break][break] Electricity coursed through the battlefield as Tofu attempted to attack the flying insect, feeling frustration build within him with every dart of the Beedrill's expert wings as it evaded damage. Ollie could tell that he was getting fatigued too. If the battle went on much longer, he wasn't sure how much Tofu could last.

[break][break] With a roar, the Pikachu raised his arms and released a surge of MAX GEYSER in attempt to blast the pokemon out of the sky.
