[attr="class","littleollie"] though being head ranger was certainly no walk in the park, there were parts of the job that ollie enjoyed more than anything. it was going on rounds to each of the rangers to check on them, and make sure everything was okay.

[break][break] it was something that he'd enjoyed doing as a captain, and something he enjoyed even more as a head ranger.

[break][break] "hey yu —" his words cut off as his jolteon scampers on ahead of them, excitedly butting his head against the museum curator's leg as soon as she appears around the corner. "hey biscuit! be good!"

[break][break] he huffs at the pokemon, before letting out a laugh, carrying an easy smile as he regards her.

[break][break] "hey yuyu," he started again. "how's it going?"

Dilligently working on her exhibit with every other spare moment that she could, Yuina was at her museum for the day when Ollie inquired about passing by for a visit. She was getting ready for a break for the afternoon, having set up a lot of the display shelves and cataloguing that she needed to do for the day already, so it would be a nice time to have a pause.[break][break]
Sure enough, just as she was walking through a cross section hallway with Moroe padding along at her heels, Yuina almost heard her name called before there was yipping and rubbing up against her legs. She gasped, but smiled, catching herself in a stumble as she looked down to find Ollie's Jolteon had found her first. Moroe yipped as she sniffed up at the other canine, yellow eyes glittering in inquiry.[break][break]
"Ollie, we were just going to make our way to the front to make sure we could find you," Yuina smiled, pushing up the pair of glasses she wore on the bridge of her nose.[break]
"It's great that you had the chance to come over here, I know Evergrande is on the other side of the map...," Yuina returned, patting Biscuit on the head as she moved towards her friend.

[break][break] "'course! you know it, anything for our yuyu," he smiles brightly at her, patting her zorua on the head briefly, watching as biscuit scampered off, trying to engage the other pokemon in a small chase.

[break][break] "so how are things goin'?" he says. "think i could steal you away for a luncheon?"

Meeting noses with the other canine briefly, Moroe sniffed and raised a paw, though as infinitely short as she was compared to the long legs of the Jolteon, she could do little else. Instead though, she did leap forward to meet the electric type in his scampering, her wispy fur running behind her like ribbons.[break][break]
Ollie's genuine admiration of her as a friend was endearing, and more than Yuina could bear to have weighing on her heart, knowing that every time she looked at him... She knew her lies... He was so encouraging, for no other reason than he genuinely believed in what she was doing, so much so that he would come all the way to the other side of the region, just so they could have a lunch together...[break][break]
"Things are going great, here in my studies and out on the field, I've been doing a lot of work with other officials, I'm really trying to make sure I can make a difference in the next line of conflict," she returned, as enthusiastically as she could, but she felt like recently every day that she was spending in this new life was making the line between her and her lies thinner, and harder to walk...[break][break]
"Right now is a great time for lunch, I know a great spot just a couple blocks down from here."

[break][break] there was a thing to be said about the paperwork, of course, but networking was also just as much about how fast word traveled. and within the rangers, as close-knit as they were, it was hard to escape the eyes and ears of those who watched over her, who then reported back to him how sweet or kind or studious she was.

[break][break] just as he had known it back then, on her first interview, ollie had always known yuina to be a shining star. somebody who would hopefully one day embody all the good things that meant to be a ranger — he had that hope for her, at least.

[break][break] "awesome! let's go. biscuit!" he whistled, calling the jolteon back for him. the pokemon loped towards him as ollie headed towards the exit, holding the door open for her as they stepped into the cold winter air.

[break][break] "so," he said, trying to sound casual. "what kind of works have you been doing with the other officials?"

[break][break] ollie, of course, had his own reasons for coming which wasn't exactly only because he missed her. after all, that phonecall he'd had from freya morningstar a few days ago still weighed pretty heavily on his mind.

[break][break] 'but i should let her tell me first,' he thought.

[break][break] because that was simply the way ollie did things. never pushing too hard, but just simply letting his rangers do what they wanted and being there when they needed him to.

Making sure she was set to leave for a little while that early afternoon, Yuina left the museum with Ollie as they walked. She lead the way towards a spot that she knew, a great place to just some comfy home food like chicken and burgers.[break][break]
Every step she took with Ollie felt heavier and heavier though, her most recent endeavor going out to evergrande city had been far more than she could have ever intended... And the mixture of guilt, fear, frustration, and everything in between had been brewing since then... It was tearing her apart from the inside, nearly bursting at the seams...[break]
If nothing else, she was just truly terrified, in spite of trying to hide it, she was being targeted, sought out, and she didn't know for which of her lives it was for... And it didn't sound like the council was readily willing to offer any help to her even though she tried to tell them everything that she knew...[break]
Well... almost everything... not quite everything...[break][break]
And then, Ollie asked, what had she been working on with other officials? Did he...[break][break]
"Oh, uhm, well I went to see Navy like you recommended a little while back. Stuck around Dewford for a while to help out. I guess I kind of got an unofficial gym battle from him, and we talked about what kind of skills to work on in combat," she started, the restaurant was just up ahead.[break]
"And then kyle lopez came to see me not too long ago, after we met on that volcano from before, and...," she trailed off, chancing a glance up at Ollie as she stopped... He already knew... She could feel it, there was zero chance that freya morningstar didn't already contact him and tell him as Yuina's superior what had happened... That she was potentially a compromise... That was why he was here, it had to be... Was he here to discredit her too? Take her badge, tell her... That her work meant nothing if she was going to put the organization at risk...[break][break]
"Freya... She... already contacted you... Didn't she...," she asked quietly, her voice broke, only slightly. She was ready for the worst... She couldn't shake the feeling that this new life had to come falling down eventually.... the people in this life like Ollie were too good to be true...

"oh wow, and kyle too! you've been busy."

[break][break] of course Yuina Higashi would be the one to draw their attention. she was just that kind of person, after all.

[break][break] ollie is easy and willing to continue onto the restaurant, to delve in the casual and the ordinary, until yuina stops in her tracks. the way that she looks at him — he can already tell what she's going to say before she says it herself.

[break][break] a hand reaches out behind to rub at his neck sheepishly. she caught him, hadn't she?

[break][break] he blinks, reaching out at her arm for concern.

Ollie's enthusiasm for the work she was putting in and the people she was engaging with showed clearly as she spoke briefly about what she'd been doing the last little while. But the tone changed, it had to, it was inevitable.[break]
Meeting his glance as she'd trailed off, stopping just yards away from the restaurant, Yuina knew it, his face said everything she needed to know that Freya had already contacted him. She couldn't know exactly what was said, how it was spun, she still wasn't sure if she believed that Freya believed her that she wasn't a threat...[break][break]
And then he confirmed it... Yuina's heart stopped, the knot in her stomach growing heavier by the second. This was it, everything she had worked for was about to be dashed... But he seemed hesitant, concerned even... and then instead of admonishment.... He asked her... If she was okay?[break][break]
His concern, in spite of what he may have been told, was what broke Yuina, knowing her truth... Knowing her lies... Tears pricked at the corners of her amber eyes as she looked up to Ollie... She couldn't do this any more... even if it meant that he might turn his back on her when he knew...[break][break]
"Ollie, I..." her voice broke, but she would hate herself even more every day after this if she didn't tell him now. He didn't deserve this...[break]
"I... I-I've been lying to you... to the league... and I don't know what's worse.... That everything you know about me is a lie.... or that I can't tell you the truth even if I wanted to..."

[break][break] "hey, hey, hey - " ollie immediately reached for her. despite the fact that they weren't that close - well, at least not in comparison to anyone else - the head ranger pulls her to him. hands reach out to hold her cheeks, thumbs brushing away the tears that form. "don't cry. it's going to be okay!"

[break][break] of course ollie's first impulse is to comfort her — any person with a heart would've reacted the same, seeing someone like yuina cry right in front of them. however, his movements still at her words.

[break][break] a lie?

[break][break] he blinks.

[break][break] "a lie? what are you talking about, yuina?"

[break][break] his brow furrows, lips twisted into a frown.

It was all Yuina could do to hold herself together, Ollie's genuine, heartfelt concern, his want to make sure that she was alright... It only made her hurt more. He was nothing short of wonderful to her, in every facet, and knowing that her entire existence to him was a lie, that this was likely to hurt him too... She couldn't stand it.[break]
She was trembling as Ollie reached out to her, trying to wipe away the tears that started to break from the gloss of her eyes, and now that she was here... Where did she even start? She couldn't take anything back, she was laying out her cards on the table one by one, and now it was all or nothing... She was either going to lose Ollie because she was a lie, or because she couldn't muster up the courage to be honest with him... Yuina couldn't let the latter be the case.[break][break]
"N-not here... We should... go sit down," Yuina returned softly, they were in the middle of the walkway still, almost near the restaurant, but at this point the thought of food was enough to make her stomach flip...[break]
Across the street was a small city block park, with some benches and such, Yuina walked gingerly over to a bench to sit down, she needed the stability, but it didn't stop her trembling any as she knew that it was time... Where was she supposed to start...[break][break]
Drawing in a deep breath, clutching her hands together in her lap, unable to meet his eye, Yuina knew it was now or never...[break]
"Yuina Higashi isn't my real name... And the reason I can't tell you the truth is because... I don't know who I really am...," she started, and now it was out in the open. No taking it back.[break][break]
"In the summer, I woke up outside of Petalburg City, with nothing... No memories of who I was, where I came from, what I was doing there... And I thought for a while that I could just start over, and be here, in Hoenn...," she was struggling to breathe through the pain in her chest, but she couldn't stop now, Ollie deserved honesty... as much of the truth as she could give him...[break]
"But everyday that I've spent as Yuina Higashi, is a day I've spent as a lie, to everyone I know now... And to the people like you, who care so much about Yuina Higashi.... Living this lie has been tearing me a part, and now that woman is looking for me..... And I don't know which of my lives she's after....," and at this point she couldn't keep it together, tears started to fall and drip to her hands clutched so tightly in her lap that her knuckles were white, and her shoulders shook in quiet sobs. Every time she had to tell this story, it only became harder and harder, this new life, this new lie... was getting harder to live...

[break][break] the head ranger followed yuina away from the restaurant towards a nearby park, sitting down beside her and waited until she gathered her thoughts.

[break][break] "yuina higashi isn't my real name."

[break][break] ollie isn't sure what he's expecting, but he sure isn't expecting that.

[break][break] "what?" he balked. "what do you mean?"

[break][break] "who are you?"

[break][break] he has no choice, however, but to listen as she spills her truths to him. and his head spins as he tries to keep grasp of it.

[break][break] it was a lot of information to take in.

[break][break] rather than focus on it, though, the head ranger reaches for her. gently, he places his hand over hers.

[break][break] "you are yuina," he said. "what makes you so sure you aren't? just because you can't remember it? just because you just appeared and don't have memories of your past?"

[break][break] "listen - some days i can't remember my own breakfast. that doesn't mean i didn't eat it."

[break][break] a stupid comparison, but one nevertheless.

[break][break] "and as for that lady, we'll figure it out. councilwoman freya morningstar is already working on it, i'm sure, and i'll help too." he flashes a hopefully convincing smile. "it'll be okay, yu."

She couldn't hold back the well of emotions any longer, every day the weight got harder to carry, and recently knowing that she could very well be a danger to everyone that she knew now, if the Drk Triad was really after her... It was more than Yuina was capable of bearing alone.[break][break]
Her quiet sniffles trembled through her body as she sat there beside Ollie, she'd laid out her truth, she was expecting the worst... She couldn't blame him, how could she have lied to him like this for so long? From the very beginning of her induction into the rangers, was there any truth to anything that she'd been doing?[break]
Still though, in spite of it all, in spite of having lied to him all this time, Ollie continued to still only see the best in her. And it nearly drove Yuina to frustration. What had she done to earn his unwavering confidence in her? What made him consistently without fail believe that she was anything but an incapable fraud?[break][break]
"No Ollie you don't understand," Yuina couldn't take it any more, she nearly snapped at him, though through her tears it was impossible to tell which side of anguish she was on.[break]
"Yuina Higashi was never supposed to exist, it's all an accident, or a cruel fate, or," she stopped, but she clutched his hand tightly in hers, the only bit of grounding that she had still. She was shaking now, she could only dream that it was that simple, that she was always Yuina Higashi, but... It was impossible....[break][break]
She was somewhere deep between rage and grief, furious at the hand that she'd been dealt and pained over how it could affect those that she had grown close to. She drew in a trembling breath though, looking directly at him with this terrible twist of emotions.[break]
"I never should have been Yuina Higashi... I-I don't know how long ago, I don't know how or when it happened, but... I was lost to a time-space distortion at some point...," Yuina spoke then, though she struggled to keep her tone even.[break][break]
"I was given the name Yuina Higashi in a time that was centuries ago now... In Hisui... The Pokemon that I have, came from Hisui, with me... I lived a short life in ancient Sinnoh, before I was lost to time again and ended up here..." her whole truth was out now, the worst parts of it, the parts that she tried so hard to bury...[break][break]
"....And.... I don't know what I did... To deserve this..."

[break][break] ollie blinked, surprised. he wasn't sure if he'd ever heard yuina talk like that, and certainly not to him.

[break][break] it made him stiffen, then quiet, realizing that perhaps this was a bigger thing than he knew. something that fleeting praises and compliments couldn't resolve.

[break][break] her fingers tightened in his and so ollie listened to her hand in silence, gently holding it as she spinned a story that seemed straight out of fables. "you were... what?" his eyes widened. ollie knew about distortions, he had even been in several himself — it was how mochi evolved, after all. however, he'd never been caught in one.

[break][break] he didn't pull back from her, but it did seem that it finally seemed to click.

[break][break] it wasn't that yuina had forgot — it was that she had never known who she was to begin with.

The searing pain that her deepest thoughts brought about was clear in Yuina's features, her stature. That chasm, that gaping maw within herself that could never be filled in being only a shadow of a person, a fraction of her whole self, was widening every day... These thoughts that she was a mistake, that she should have never been in this life, that this person was never supposed to exist... She knew they were true, even if it meant driving herself deeper into the suffocating darkness within herself...[break][break]
Gripping Ollie's hand tightly, she'd laid everything out, Ollie knew just about everything that she did up to this point, and it was painful. Tears flowed steadily down her cheeks, her truth was something that she carried every day, but giving her truth to someone else never made it easier... It didn't make it easier to live with... Instead, she had to worry what this would change, how this made people feel... Telling them that she'd been lying to them and that she wasn't her real self...[break][break]
How could she be worthy of so much care from those that Yuina Higashi had come to know, when she was an anomaly? If you were to love someone, you should be able to love their whole self... She couldn't give someone her whole self even if she wanted to...[break][break]
Ollie was quiet for a couple of moments, and she couldn't blame him... It was a lot to understand about herself, and she thought for a moment that he may not even believe her... Where she'd never given him a reason to have so much confidence in her, she'd definitely given him a reason to distrust her now since she'd made it clear that sitting in front of him right then, everything up to that point was a lie.[break]
Instead though... He asked the one question that she dreaded the most...[break][break]
"I... I must, somewhere... But, I don't remember anything... I only know that I lived the life in Hisui that I did because of the distortion that took place in the swamps on that night...," Yuina offered slowly, quietly, the deepest parts that she thought she could move past. She had to be another person at one point, there was no question about it, but... She knew now that there was no future that she could have both lives... And she worried the most that if that time came... She wouldn't be given a choice...[break][break]
"But Ollie.... I'm so scared," she whispered after a moment, her voice trembled, she couldn't contain her fears...[break]
"That woman... She's looking for me... And I'm certain I've never seen her before.... In this life. What... What if I was someone terrible before... And that if she finds me... I lose everything that I have now? Everything that... never should have been mine in the first place..."
