Just as the head tournament official was announcing the brackets for the main tournament's elimination rounds, Josh's name got called for the next round of one of Vital City's side events. They were three-round, single-elimination, winner-take-all events that fired on demand the entire time Vital City was at the giant venue.

Directed to one of the battle courts at the back, Josh waved to his second-round opponent. "Lucia, is it! Gym Leader Devlin or Elite Ranger Devlin, but you can call me Josh... and this is Raikiri," he introduced himself and the quadrupedal Zeraora next to him. While most of his kind fought standing upright, this lightning cat moved and fought on all fours. "Good luck to you, and may the best trainer win."

Lucia's name was called as she faced her first opponent. The staff guided her onto the correct path forward into the back courts where she learned about who she was preparing to face off against... [break][break]

"J-Josh Devlin?!" Lucia's eyes widened at the appearance of one of the gym leaders being her opponent in this round. How was this fair?! She barely just started and was facing off against somebody like him?! [break][break]

She panicked, quietly mumbling to herself while her Banette would escaped from its pokeball while in the seclusion of the hallways and chitter to her. She was much too freaked out to notice and looked ready to have a panic attack. It wasn't soon after that it took matters into her own hands. [break][break]

Dusk phased through Lucia until entering her body completely. Her body tensed up for a moment before going limp and opening her eyes to reveal crimson colored irises. Saying nothing, she continued to walk to the upcoming battle. [break][break]

Lucia stepped foot onto the court while looking at Josh. Unlike most trainers, she looked rather cold and stoic. Her hand fell onto her ball without any greeting or hesitation while Josh introduced himself. [break][break]

"You're one of the gym challenge people in Hoenn." She said to him, rolling her pokeball around her hand with an apathetic expression on her face. Her unnatural red eyes lingered on the Zeraora next to him. Just judging them both for a minute before she tossed out her choice of Pokemon. [break][break]

Hero the Dunsparce would come out into the field, the grass snake pokemon rattling around as it would look at what it was facing up against. The Dunsparce looked terrified, but its head reared back at Lucia before it seemed to steel itself for the fight ahead. [break][break]

"Hm." Lucia spoke while facing Josh. "Let's see what you're made of." [break][break]

"That's me, Josh Devlin, the Master of Faster!" the Gym Leader teased. Not getting a response right away, it seemed the black-haired child was more serious than she looked. All business and no banter. That was fine by him. Sparks flew from beneath Raikiri's four paws, the Zeraora's vicious gaze locking onto Hero the Dunsparce. By now, Josh had acquired quite the fanbase, many people out of the main tournament following him around the venue to watch him battle with the mythical thundercat he was known for.

When the starting horn sounded, Raikiri reacted in a split second, sprinting forward like a track runner off the starting blocks. Both his front paws burst into flames, attempting to ram and trample the Dunsparce with a flurry of FIRE PUNCHES from above.

The bell rang to signal the start of the fight. Josh's Zeraora took off in a dead sprint towards Hero. The DUnsparce let out as fearsome of a war cry as it could. He raised his tail as the appendage would begin to spin rapidly as it prepared itself for a fight against a worthy opponent. [break][break]

"Drill Run." [break][break]

As the Zeraora closed in from above, the Dunsparce launched itself airborne to meet his foe. The small stinger became coated in a strange energy that increased the side, then sent it straight for a collision with the Zeraora. [break][break]

Hero's whirring tail was a grave concern for Raikiri: one stab with that thing would tear the feline up. Even with such high speed, the risk of even a sideswipe was too great for Josh's tastes.

Just barely able to BOUNCE out of the way of the nasty natural weapon, Raikiri's eyes shifted to the court below. With a loud purr that rattled the air around both Pokémon and trainers, he fired a barrage of ELECTRO BALLS at the normal-type below.

The Zeraora's strike had found its mark on Hero. The Dunsparce was pushed back some small amount of distance away while it would buzz out a little in pain for the incoming punch. Its wings fluttered on as it pushed itself back into the fray. [break][break]

Lucia watched with a disinterested expression. She instead watched Josh fully and seemed to never break eye contact. [break][break]

The barrage of Electro Balls was a concern considering the DUnsparce's mainly physical moveset, but it would counter with some projectiles of its own. Harnessing his mysterious connections, Hero launched a barrage of ANCIENT POWER laden blasts at the Zeraora in return. [break][break]

The barrage of stones rising out of the floor was a big concern for Raikiri. If one of those altered the trajectory of one of his charges, or worse yet, he got squished between two of the larger ones, it would give Hero a window to use truly dangerous attacks. It was a window Josh simply could not allow Lucia to take advantage of.

Josh raised his Z-GLOVE above his head. It and the QUICKINIUM-Z hidden in Raikiri's fur gleamed yellow, a deafening sonic boom rumbling through the arena from the Zeraora's supersonic ramming attack. Were Hero somehow able to withstand the HYPERSONIC PLASMA CHARGE, he would also need to endure white lightning that even a LIGHTNING ROD would be useless against!

Hero hadn't been doing so good against the Zeraora, though Lucia really seemed to pay it no mind. The Dunsparce was hit by the Electro Ball barrage and plopped right back down against the ground. Her eyes moved to the glove he was wearing. [break][break]

His partner would receive a noticeable boost in power and came roaring at the Dunsparce again just in time for the little guy to recover and try his hand at a DOUBLE-EDGE and try his best to stand up against the Zeraora's attack. [break][break]

It did not take long for the side judge to call the match in the Gym Leader's favor after Raikiri mercilessly ran the Dunsparce over. Any follow-up attacks might risk complications a healing machine would not be able to fix. Once he had the signal that the match was over, Josh let Lucia withdraw Hero if she wanted before he came over to offer a handshake alongside his Zeraora that moved on all fours.

"I hope you had a good time," Josh said, trying to comfort Lucia after his flawless victory. He wouldn't even have to visit the healing machines at all; his Pokémon had escaped the round completely unharmed. Such was the immense power of a Z-Move developed by a Gym Leader. "Planning on watching the main tournament finals? I'm heading there when they start the top eight."
