"Ollie!" Howard let out a gasp, then screamed internally. He had thrown hands with the Head Ranger off the island north of Dewford a handful of months ago. 'Throwing hands' wasn't correct, actually. It was more like an awkward waltz between two shoe connoisseurs.

Ollie's kicks were still immaculate, but the archaeologist didn't know what to think about the Head Ranger. It had been pretty easy to defeat a Cubchoo, but Howard didn't consider their fight to be anything more than a disaster.

"Let's have a nice sho- fight. Fight. I said fight." Howard's eye blinked as he glanced at Serizawa. The menace was hardly listening to him, instead rampaging through the battlefield with brute strength and a prayer. There was no strategy, only an angry gremlin that had folded Howard's knees twice since this tournament had begun.

"You ready, Head Ranger? Go easy on me!"

No recollections about a conversation about kicks, or Rocket's supposedly low budget. No, the last time that he'd asked seen the other man was when he'd recruited him for a pet project that had something to do with the teracrystals surrounding Fortree.

That was good. Ollie not knowing was good. Maybe Howard could fake 'till he made it.

"Pikachus..." Howard muttered, feeling his eye twitch. He remembered that Pikachu from the island. He also remembered fighting a Pikachu earlier in the tournament, which had drop kicked his Larvitar. The memory was fresh, and the shame was great. "Pii..."

Howard slapped his face with both hands, before staring forward.

"Serizawa, use-" Yet the Larvitar was already lunging forward, slamming its body into the arena. The battlefield shook with the force of an Earthquake, causing Howard's limbs turn to jelly.

"...Earthquake." Howard said finally as the rumbling continued.

A TRAILBLAZE sped up his pace, leaf gathering around the fissured ground as he leaped forward in a zig-zag pattern. Green light coalesced around the Pikachu before he attempted a headbutt.

"One flooded the arena a few rounds ago and kicked my Larvitar into the sky."

Howard's voice was as traumatized as any post-battle League civilian Ollie had rescued during his Ranger career. It was as if someone had mixed the Meteno incident with the Battle of Dewford and had created the greatest freak accident Lilycove had ever seen. aaron faust would make it into the history books one day, and Howard's account would be there as well.

"I quite like sho- Pikachus, actually." The sound of a distant piii rang in his ears.

Terrible. Trauma was terrible.

"TAR!" Serizawa grunted as the Trailblaze got in close, headbutting the Larvitar. His immediate response was to Thrash the Pikachu into the dirt.

Yeah, coincidences never happed in the Hoenn region. Fighting a Head Ranger on a boat, then in a tournament? Obscene. That never happened.

"I don't think I'll ever recover, Head Ranger." Howard's eye was haunted. He had seen some shit. That shit was named aaron faust , and his Pikachu's hopeful Surf echoed in his ears. The assquake was the cherry on top of this Dynamax sundae.

"Serizawa, counter with Hyper Beam!" Howard shouted. A stupid move, given Tofu's speed and closeness. It was an utter rookie mistake. Luckily, Serizawa ignored it, instead getting punted into the sky by Iron Tail.

"LARVIII...!" Serizawa made a fist as he fell to the ground. "...TAR!" He punched the earth, with trembled as an Earthquake began.

In a twisted sort of way, Serizawa ignoring Howard's commands and doing whatever he wanted was good at keeping people on the back foot. It had certainly worked against Tofu, before arcs of lightning zapped Serizawa to his knees. Instead of his Pokemon, Howard peered at Ollie.

It was true that eggheads were durable. It also didn't help that Howard had been throttled by illeana reyes's Eevee and wanted to throttle GIDEON GRAVES.

"Howie?" The archaeologist frowned and lowered his hat. Howie, Ollie. Was this a comedic routine? "That's like, third shared activity or second date territory. Watch Brycen-man 2: Lost in Castelia with me and we'll talk about 'Howie'."

Serizawa grumbled to his feet, shaking his head as if ridding himself of a headache. The archaeologist snapped his fingers. "Earthqua-"

Out came a Stone Edge.

[break][break] The earth vibrated before the sight of two jagged stones cut through the air. They were aimed to kill, and would've done so if they were able to pierce through Tofu. Fortunately, the Pikachu was quick on his feet. He leaped forward around the attack with TRAILBLAZE before aiming to headbutt the other.

"Hell, if you can sit through Brycen-man, you can be my best friend."

A second date? The first one ended with the mauling of a Cubchoo, the talking of shoes, and Rocket's payment policies. Howard wouldn't even call that a 'date', more like a domestic dispute that ended with Howard stealing a boat. He was secretly glad that he hadn't brought Shirley to this tournament, it wouldn't have ended well.

"I have the whole box set, you're welcome to borrow it at any time."

A million miles away, Tempest Quinn was cheering.

"..." Howard scowled and raised a hand. "Earthqua-"

Serizawa lunged forward with its mighty fist, smacking Tofu with the intention of Thrashing it. Howard exhaled through the nose. All it had to do was Earthquake. Why wouldn't Serizawa use the move? Was he stupid?

[break][break] The THRASH pummels against Tofu, who squeaks with pain. Frustration builds as he glares back at Ollie, too distracted by the idea of a friend-date that he doesn't trigger the evolution just yet. Electricity burns through the field as an IRON TAIL swings in the Larvitar's direction.

"The museum? How do you know where I work?" Howard paled as he patted his pockets. Had he dropped his ID card again, or was Remiel Calcifet playing pranks on him? Did the Head Ranger have spies tailing him?

Did he know that Howard was a Rocket Admin?

"Y-yeah we could totally do that haha..." Howard began to sweat nervously. "I'll rent the room myself. I'll set the day, yeah?"

Donk! Serizawa recoiled under the weight of the Iron Tail. He shuddered for a moment, before opening his maw. Larvitar opened his maw, and a bright beam of light emerged as a Hyper Beam. The final strike would decide this entire battle, for better or worse.

"Earthqua-" Howard's voice was drowned out by a Hyper Beam.

[break][break] Whatever other questions Ollie had was drowned out by the sight of a HYPER BEAM which rapidly crashed into the Pikachu and knocked him out. When the smoke clears, the Head Ranger returns Tofu to his pokeball and then walks over to the archeologist, offering his fist out to bump.

[break][break] His lips dimple into a cheeky smile.
