Remiel follows her gaze toward the shut door, but his line of reasoning shifts when he notices it. Is she looking for an escape route in case she needs it? Does she distrust him that much? Surely she doesn't see him as some sort of animal that would attack her in broad daylight— in the middle of a RANGER HQ station— like this.[break][break]

He almost laughs, but stifles it down when he realizes it would only insult her. It's that line of thinking that prompts him to be frank in his response shortly thereafter. The ex-ADMIN shifts in his seat and crosses his arms as he settles into her gaze.[break][break]

"Just ask me what you really want to know, Luka. Beyond the political subterfuge and smuggling operations, you really want to know if I murdered anyone, don't you?"[break][break]

Even the GOLETT pauses its play, retreating its hand from Luka's stapler to shift a seemingly surprised look at them both after this statement.[break][break]

The room falls silent. Luka gapes at Remiel, her mask of professionalism melting into one of shock and barely disguised horror. How can he say something like that so casually?[break][break]

She coughs once, splutters, and tries to compose herself. Sugar gives the prince a disparaging look as she wriggles under the desk and hops up on her trainer's lap, ribbons curling around her wrist. She sits upright, staring at Remiel from across the desk with aquamarine eyes narrowed.[break][break]

"I-"[break][break]

Luka clears her throat. She'd like to say she doesn't think him capable of such a thing, but certainty gets caught behind her teeth. Her voice, when she finally finds it again, is barely above a whisper. "Well, did you?"[break][break]

Despite the Sylveon's glare, Remiel's eyes stay honed on Luka's reaction. He might have expected an emotional outburst of some sort,but the insult from before simmers down now that she's replied. Even though she wants to know, however, the royal can easily tell that she is scared to learn the truth.[break][break]

Eventually, he sighs and gives in.[break][break]

"Not by my hand, no."

[break]

Their eye contact finally breaks as he sets his downcast gaze on the open palm he's set atop his lap. Outwardly, it was pristine. Only he could see the blood that dripped from the crevices between his fingers. "But I've ordered people killed... so I'm just as guilty... wouldn't you say?"[break][break]

Only then does Remiel look back up at her, ready to receive whichever harsh judgment she might cast upon him. Albeit hopeful it would not effect his participation in the upcoming snowboy festival.[break][break]

Luka can feel the but coming before Remiel speaks it aloud.[break][break]

Her hands tremble in her lap as she faces him. She can't believe the matter-of-fact way he confesses to murder; because even if he didn't pull the trigger, that's exactly what it is. He offers no apology— does he feel any remorse? He looks to her as though expecting absolution for his sins, but she is far from divine enough to do so.[break][break]

A white-hot rage overtakes her, one so deep and so sudden that it makes her head spin. After years of practice, she's become an expert at bottling her emotions and shoving them into the deepest parts of her. But now, it all comes bubbling to the surface like uncorked champagne.[break][break]

She stands up so quickly that Sugar falls out of her lap with a surprised yelp. In the same motion, she reaches across her desk and slaps Remiel smartly across the face.[break][break]

It's as if she exists outside her body. She only realizes what she's done when her palm starts to sting. Luka looks down at her hand, then at Remiel, and then, because she doesn't know what else to do, she sits back down. Folds her hands demurely in her lap, just as before.[break][break]

"Yes," she answers, voice trembling like a leaf in the wind, "I would."[break][break]

Despite the Sylveon's yelp, the slap that strikes comes with little warning. Remiel had been too wrapped up in his guilt to brace for it. And, in its aftermath, the EX-ADMIN simply sits there in stunned silence.[break][break]

Had Luka just done that? Was the blooming sting of red spreading across his cheek simply an illusion? He stares straight ahead as she calmly sits back down, letting the reality of what just happened sink into his disbelieving mind.[break][break]

A part of him thought something like this would have made him feel better. When he'd burned at the GALARIAN EMBASSY, or been stabbed by jayden cross during combat, the pain had never served to alleviate the weight of his sins. He'd suffered at the hands of TEAM ROCKET in those instances, after all. Never anyone he'd victimized.[break][break]

But now that it'd happened, he wasn't sure what he felt. Certainly not anger. Certainly not regret. Something in-between, he thinks. The kind of dissatisfied melancholy that will echo throughout his night while the rest of the world is asleep.[break][break]

"R-Right..." He finally answers, far more meekly than before, as he adjusts the collar of his shirt to show some semblance of composure. "Did that... make you feel any better, Miss Chene?"[break][break]

Or shall he see himself out?

Though if this was her response to every member of the AMNESTY PROGRAM, and not just him, then he supposed carrying on with the SNOWBOY FESTIVAL was a faulty endeavor from the start.[break][break]

Her hand is still stinging. Luka twists it in her lap as she tries to meet Remiel’s eye, tries so hard to appear unaffected by what she’d just done, and what he'd just confessed to. But shame darkens her green eyes, and her mouth twists in an expression of uncertainty that he might recognize from their time together.[break][break]

It’s a pity that Remiel knows her better than most— that makes her all the easier to read.[break][break]

Perhaps the prince had deserved it, but that doesn’t mean she thinks her actions are justified. She’s a representative of the amnesty program, after all. Stooping so low doesn’t reflect well on her or their organization as a whole.[break][break]

Should she apologize? Despite her regret, there’s a part of her - a part that she’s deeply ashamed of - that had reveled in the act. But somehow, that just makes her feel even worse.[break][break]

“No,” she answers after a long silence, “It didn’t.”
[break][break]

In this case, she can only really reply with blunt honesty. But where to go from here? Her outburst had ruined any semblance of professionalism between them.[break][break]

“I-“ She frowns. “I don’t know-“ Her voice is just as fragmented and disjointed as her thoughts. “This is all very, um. D-difficult.”[break][break]

She sucks in a breath. "I've never thought— I don't think people are born evil. Humans are capable of doing so many terrible things...but they're also capable of so much good. That's why...t-that's why I wanted to be part of this. Despite my history with Rocket," which he knows, and which makes his betrayal all the worse, "I think the amnesty program is good, and it's the right thing to do, a-and I want to support everyone who risks their lives to defect.[break][break]

But...with you, it's a lot harder to look past everything." It's not just their history. If it weren't for Remiel's position or status as an Avatar, he'd likely be in prison for everything he'd done. "So...I need to know. What made you leave them?"[break][break]

Although the sting of her strike continues to burn upon his cheek, Remiel nods in solemn understanding. By the time she's finished explaining herself, his Golett has repositioned itself by his side once more. He pats its head to let it know everything is alright. It emits a doubtful mewl.[break][break]

"I left when they risked the entire world to harvest the METENO METEROID," The EX-ADMIN begins to inform her. "I left when I realized the TEAM ROCKET I thought I'd known never existed. Despite all the bad I've done Luka, my intentions had always been good. If you believe in the AMNESTY PROGRAM, then I'm sure some part of you can believe that... right?"[break][break]
