It feels weird to address him as such. It feels even weirder to be meeting with Remiel like this at all, actually. Luka sits behind her desk at the Lilycove ranger base, her face a mask of professional politeness while her foot taps restlessly against the floor.[break][break]

Her work with the ranger's amnesty program makes such a meeting inevitable, but she still doesn't know how to act around the prince. They hadn't really spoken in any capacity since she'd been saved from Lulu Flint's lab. That's a bit unfair of her, perhaps, but he hadn't sought her out either. Perhaps they both realized that they needed space from one another.[break][break]

But now they're here, and the least she can do is be cordial.[break][break]

They hadn't seen each other since he'd turned her over to the LEAGUE medics that fateful night. It was an understatement to say speaking with each other now, without any doom or gloom looming above their heads, was odd. They hadn't had a normal conversation since...[break][break]

The GOLETT accompanying Remiel accidentally bumps into his leg after he stops at her desk. He casts little ATLAS a look before accepting Luka's offer with a nod; thankful, at least, that the golem had snapped him out of his thoughts. If anyone could put personal sentiments aside and focus on business, it was him. Or so he reminded himself.[break][break]

"Thank you," He answers, unbuttoning his peacoat as he proceeds to take a seat. "ollie morales told me we'd host another one for the new year. I hoped to participate in it on behalf of the AMNESTY PROGRAM."[break][break]

Had they ever had a normal conversation? They'd never even been friends. In a way, meeting again in a professional capacity makes things easier; there's a script she can follow, and polite distance is easier to maintain. Even though Luka still remembers what had happened the last time they took a 'meeting' together, it's easier to push the memory aside when she's still in work mode.[break][break]

Her Sylveon is sitting on her desk, idly batting a pen around. When Remiel and the Golett approach, she looks up and mews softly, then extends her head, much like a cat looking for pets. Luka glances over at Sugar, but doesn't say anything about it. If her baby wants to turn traitor, so be it.[break][break]

"I see. Well, thank you for your interest. We're hoping that this event can make people view the amnesty program in a better light. ollie morales has asked me to help organize most of it, so I'm glad he sent you my way." She taps her fingertips on the table, noting with a stab of annoyance that some of her manicure has chipped.[break][break]

"What exactly were you hoping to help with?" Somehow, she can't picture Remiel being interested in the more menial labor required. "We need help with security, event planning...and funding, mostly."[break][break]

When the SYLVEON greets Remiel for pets, the exiled prince offers them with little hesitation. "Funding, of course," He answers, keeping his gaze on Luka as the scritches slowly travel up the feline's neck. "But I'd like to assist on a more involved level if you would be willing to collaborate."[break][break]

Atlas, in the meantime, peeks over Luka's desk to look at her manicured fingers. It seems wholly interested in the knick-knacks it finds there but doesn't dare to reach out and grab any in front of its trainer. "I can provide some of the dragons from the CALCIFET DRACIARY as security," The royal continues. "But, more than that, I can help you organize and host some of its events. Perhaps a traditional letter-writing ceremony?"[break][break]

"Oh-oh. Wow, that's..." For a moment she blinks at him, taken aback by his apparent eagerness to help. Perhaps it's a bit mean of her, but she assumed he would simply make a donation and leave it at that. Her professional facade cracks for a moment while she processes this, and she clears her throat as she tries to get it back.[break][break]

Happily oblivious, Sugar continues to purr as Remiel pets her. Her ribbons slowly wind around his arm as he does, keeping him tethered in place. He has no choice but to keep petting her now![break][break]

"I mean...right, okay. That's very generous of you." And she means it. If Remiel remembers anything about her, it's that her compliments flow like wine, but are always sincere. "If you'd really like to help organize things...well, I— we would greatly appreciate it."[break][break]

She clears her throat again, and is grateful for an excuse to look down at her laptop as she types out a few notes. "You said a letter ceremony? What does that involve?"[break][break]

Her surprise isn't completely unexpected. In the past, more often than not, donating funds to a charity or festival was his MO. It helped him get reelected as GALARIAN AMBASSADOR. It had spread the news of GALAR's good faith to the Hoennian people. But only a few times had he ever had a direct hand in organizing these kinds of events.[break][break]

A lot had changed in the year since he'd defected. Now, more than ever, he needed to prove his loyalties and well-meaning intentions to HOENN. Despite the price on his head, Remiel felt it was worth it. He would not cower from ROCKET.[break][break]

"Splendid," He replies with the hint of a smile, distracted briefly as her Sylveon insists on being pet with two hands as opposed to just one. When asked what his idea entailed, he nods. "It's a tradition with roots in the ancient people of the DECOLORE ISLANDS. Essentially, participants write down their aspirations or goals for the new year and store them in envelopes marked for JIRACHI. These envelopes are often swapped so that others may share in seeing these aspirations through." The Galarian explains.[break][break]

The spaces between his words are filled with the sound of nails on a keyboard. If Remiel watches her as she types, he’ll see glossy pink lips silently sounding out the words she transcribes, a habit so instinctual now that she doesn’t even notice it.[break][break]

Once she’s finished, she glances idly back up at him. ”Mn? Oh, yes, I think it will. It fits in with the theme we’re going for, I think. Looking towards the future— that kind of thing.”[break][break]

What would he put in his envelope, she wonders. What does the Remiel in front of her want now? Back in the day she might have had the semblance of an answer, but now all she knows for certain is that she really doesn’t know him at all.[break][break]
It’s only then, in the midst of her musings, that she notices Sugar’s antics. A soft chuckle breezes past her lips, the only sound she’s made today that sounds genuine, not layered behind professional artifice. ”Ah…I’m sorry about her. I can get her off, if you’d like.”[break][break]

Looking towards the future.

Remiel can't think of a better theme to incorporate the AMNESTY PROGRAM or the beginnings of his IDEAL WORLD with. He had wondered what Luka's sentiments were on the former, but he supposed her involvement with such a festival answered that question. Had his history with TEAM ROCKET affected her views? Did this mean she could forgive him yet?[break][break]

Deciding these were questions that didn't necessarily need to be answered, the royal turns his attention back to the Sylveon. "Oh, it's fine. Looks like she's had just about enough of my affections anyway." He chuckles, pausing briefly to admire the same sound from his former lover. It was just as he'd remembered it. The feline, in the meantime, parts from his hands to rub against his leg.[break][break]

Looking around at the surrounding base, and accidentally ignoring his Golett as it repeatedly presses down on Luka's stapler, Remiel asks, "Have you been stationed here long?"[break][break]

"She's being greedy." Luka clicks her tongue, but her tone remains airy and lighthearted. Sugar mewls, as if in agreement, and continues to rub against Remiel's leg. Despite everything that happened between him and her trainer, it seems she's willing to forgive as long as that means more petting.[break][break]

Speaking of Pokemon antics, Luka's attention turns next to the Golett playing with her stapler. That inspires another breathy laugh, but she makes no effort to stop them. It's clear that when it comes to spoiling Pokemon, she's often the guilty party.[break][break]

"I've been here for...mm. A few months, I think," she answers once she's no longer distracted. "It's a bit strange having my own office." The simple phrase reminds her that she's here to work, and like a switch being flipped, she quickly shifts back to business mode.[break][break]

"Right. So...you said you'd be willing to lend some dragons? We don't want to intimidate our guests, so some that are friendly but still tough would be ideal."[break][break]

She stares at him over the lip of her laptop screen. "We doubt Rocket will be brazen enough to attack with so many civilians and families around. But I'm sure they don't think too highly of the amnesty program, so we can't be too careful. There's...a chance this might put you in danger." Her eyes bore into his. "Do you still want to do it?"

Breathy laughter and warm smiles briefly make them forget the peculiarity of this all. But, before he knows it, she's back to business. He nods in understanding. And his smile, too, is quick to retreat.[break][break]

"That shouldn't be an issue," He confirms with a nod, setting his gaze back onto her. "I have just the roster in mind. As for TEAM ROCKET... I've been living under the threat of their attack for over a year now." Attempted assassinations. The explosion at the GALARIAN EMBASSY. Had she heard of none of it? Perhaps this was a conscious decision.[break][break]

"I refuse to let them dictate my actions with fear. If this can do some good for the AMNESTY PROGRAM, then I'm determined to assist."[break][break]

Luka continues to stare at Remiel as he speaks. She's not quite sure what she's looking for in his face, but she doesn't find it. For a fleeting moment she finds herself missing his smile, but she shoos that thought away before it can fully manifest.[break][break]

There's a part of her that wants to scoff and say well, you did this to yourself. But despite the best efforts of Remiel, of Rocket, and of Hoenn itself, she hasn't lost her kindness yet.[break][break]

"I see," is all she says at first. "That must be very hard."[break][break]

A silence falls between them. It's thick and heavy, like a shroud. But after a few moments Luka parts the curtain and asks the question that's been on her mind for almost a year.[break][break]

"Why did you join them?"

Is that all she has to say? The silence between them widens into an uncomfortable void as Remiel processes this. It hurts to know the sympathetic and caring luka chêne he once knew was no longer present. But he had no one to blame but himself, of course.[break][break]

The manner in which he'd betrayed her love was a guilt he would carry for the rest of his life. He didn't deserve her sympathies. That was an IDEAL WORLD he had sacrificed for her benefit. Though fate clearly had other ideas despite it, having used Lulu Flint as the vehicle of its defiance.[break][break]

When asked why he had joined TEAM ROCKET in the first place, the royal looks back up at her surprised and gauges her expression. Then, after briefly checking for any onlookers or eavesdroppers, he takes a deep breath. "Right... I never did tell you, did I?"[break][break]

He supposed she had a right to know given everything that had happened. Though he couldn't imagine it would help with anything. Unlike his conversation with PENELOPE LIVY in the realm of the ULTRA PLANT, however, Remiel decides to be straightforward here.[break][break]

"I joined to escape my ordinary world. I was enticed by the promise of power TEAM ROCKET had offered. The power to shape my fate as I saw fit. Then I... lost myself, Luka."[break][break]

He's right. After the way he'd treated her he really doesn't deserve her sympathy, much less the time she's granting him now. As Luka continues to stare at the prince she wonders why she can't bring herself to hate him; it would be justified, surely. Perhaps it's a manifestation of her own stubbornness, an unwillingness to fall into the cycle of hatred and revenge that continues to propel the conflict between factions.[break][break]

She doesn't want to be another cog in the war machine.[break][break]

But Remiel had allowed himself to be one. He'd been an instrumental part, in fact. And no, he'd never told her why. Shortly after his first confession she had fled, the grief and betrayal too much for her to bear. Since then, all she had was speculation, and it's eaten away at her.[break][break]

So she listens silently as he answers her while her hands, hidden under the table, twist restlessly in her lap.[break][break]

"I see..." For now, she tries to keep her expression neutral. But she can't help but feel a stab of disappointment. She had naively hoped that he had simply been dragged into it, that he had been blackmailed, forced in against his will. To know that he had chosen Rocket of his own volition pains her almost as much as when he'd first revealed it.[break][break]

"What do you mean, you lost yourself? What did you do?"[break][break]

She's determined now to know the worst of him. It's only then that she'll be able to decide if there's anything good left.
