we need to talk. it can’t wait. something happened. i'm on my way to hq.

it was all she sent, having no doubt that with the prolonged silent treatment she had served him, her brother would make time for her now. when she arrived, sharp amber eyes glanced over the face at the desk and gathered that yes, he was in, and she strode past without a word as usual.[break][break]

a pokeball was already in her hand, the cloned creature it contained occupying her thoughts, and effectively blocking out the memories of the sunken island, and another traitorous brother. all the screaming and the violence faded into more distant yesterdays, behind dancing feathers and falling snow, and black holes.[break][break]

her heels stopped behind his door, and a few knocks broke long weeks of silence.[break][break]

Weeks of tenuous, uncomfortable silence are forgiven in an instant for fear of her safety, and Cillian's on his feet when the office door opens. The Sylveon whose TELEKINESIS had opened it sits on the desk, ribbons swishing.[break][break]

"Lulu." Cillian maintains a respectful distance of a few feet, allowing her to enter without feeling suffocated, but there's clear pain and worry etched in his face. The first thing he asks is, "Are you OK?"

she entered and watched him, something in her eyes sharpening with each step he took closer, though it didn’t reach her stony face.[break][break]

his question, though it inspired a small wave of anger, assured her that it was him. she didn’t ask for code word.[break][break]

”i’m fine.” her response was plain, bitter-toned and quick to fall behind more important matters.[break][break]

”this.”[break][break]

she held up the pokeball containing the rookidee. she did not release it. she hadn’t since that briefest moment after the dream. [break][break]

her voice lowered in volume, softening despite herself, with some ethereal trace of innocence long dead and gone. ”do you remember reuben?”[break][break]

he might recall the rookidee their father had discovered her fondness for, and gotten rid of in the night, breaking her eight year old heart with a lesson: pokemon were tools, not companions.

she had been very sad for a long time.[break][break]

Like her, Cillian is assured by the ice with which she greets him, anger flashing evident across her face. It makes him falter, never quite reaching her where he'd intended to offer consolation. Right. She still hated him.[break][break]

He swallows, uncomfortable, and takes a step back, instead. Gives her space.[break][break]

The conversation pivots so quickly that it takes him a moment to dredge up the memory, brow furrowing as he tries to recall.[break][break]

Their father shouting. Little Saoirse in tears. Cillian struggling to find words to comfort, for he knew she'd never see her beloved bird again.[break][break]

"Reuben," he says softly. "I remember."[break][break]

It clicks, then, thanks to his own experience with a Pokémon he'd lost to Necrozma's void.[break][break]

"Did you have those dreams, too?"

it wasn’t hate, despite what she’d said. it was hurt. a wound still healing, and one she knew she couldn’t blame him for.[break][break]

still, she was nothing if not stubborn.[break][break]

her mind echoed his recollection of their father, and her nose twitched loathingly at the memory. she squeezed the pokeball in her hand a little tighter, despite how terribly strange it felt to hold it in the first place.[break][break]

those dreams. but she’d said nothing about dreams yet.[break][break]

“you know?”[break][break]

her brow furrowed with realization.[break][break]

”you mean you had the dreams?” did it have something to do with his relationship with shadow pokemon even if so, why would she share his dream now?[break][break]

perhaps it had not been a true dream at all, but rather some sort of rerouting, some cables switched behind their illusive plane of reality.[break][break]

She wouldn't recognize the Zubat that emerges into the light, immediately seeking shelter upon his shoulder. It's small for its species, one of its fangs chipped. Cillian's expression is sad.[break][break]

"She died fighting Necrozma. She was a Crobat, then. But the memory was of the day we met, so..."[break][break]

Maeve, he'd christened her after death. But this was only a copy of a memory. He's not sure what to call her.[break][break]

"I did some digging. Says we met in the 'Cloud'." His lips press uncomfortably tight. "We met in Saffron. Rocket's HQ there. When I was still a grunt. I don't know what they are, but they're not..."

She's less alarmed than he expects. It's intrigue he sees in her, that Quinn look that they — like their grandfather — always adopted when they were on the edge of some discovery. It was a fever, intoxicating.[break][break]

He's not sure if she'll share, given the tension between them. He's quietly relieved when she does.[break][break]

Cillian frowns, thoughtful.[break][break]

"That could make some sense as to why they've had such an... impact." Most dreams didn't turn up physical evidence in your bedroom, after all. His Lycanroc had tried to tear out his throat in a frenzy before he'd calmed it with the MIASMA. But that alone wouldn't be enough to spark Lulu's fire. "Do you think it might help your research?"[break][break]

She'd been looking into dreams, he recalls.

and it had indeed been the shiny rookidee she remembered, or so she was convinced.[break][break]

reaching into a pocket, she pulled out another pokeball, and released a porygon-z into her brother’s office. it was black and maroon, and about it was an aura her brother would find most familiar.[break][break]

Cillian nods, mentally taking notes. There's a fever in his eyes, that classic Quinn curiosity. His earlier trepidations fled, for now.[break][break]

"I call it 'Shadow Wave'. Creative, I know." His lip twitches. "Different from the power my Lycanroc obtained, so the dream-shadows are as different as their toxin counterparts, it seems."[break][break]

He releases his Lycanroc. She'd recognize it, no doubt, as the one given to him by his ex-girlfriend, Emma. Only its deep midnight-blue fur seems more purple, now, and there's a menacing quality to it beyond its wolfish appearance. It looks like it would happily tear out their throats, only Cillian's MIASMA keeps it complacent.

"I call what he can do 'Shadow Down'; it sharply impacts the defenses of all foes on the field. I wonder if it has anything to do with their personality, or if the dreams chose at random?"

But guilt surrounding her recent animosity toward him keeps this warm sentiment from crossing his tongue. He distracts himself by scratching idly beneath the Lycanroc's chin, a gesture that seems to soothe the beast.[break][break]

"As I will to help with your research, should my assistance be of any use. My position affords me the, hm, luxury of being able to shift around certain appointments to suit my schedule."[break][break]

He didn't often abuse that power, and so would use it liberally to ensure he could support his sister. Anything to mend that rift between them.
