This does not change as the man speaks, his voice emerging from somewhere near his waist. “I believe so.” Kazuya recognizes the Head Ranger. “I am honored by such an esteemed opponent.” Though he expects a burst of animosity, his better half wins out. For now. This young man would have been sweeping bathroom stalls during his framing. The lenient outlook is helped by the sight of the Pikachu at his side.[break][break]

Memories flood in. A Pichu curled up in a young Kazuya’s bed, a foundational piece in a pyramid of stuffed animals. That same electric type evolving in a schoolyard brawl. The pair standing side-by-side with a trophy in hand. At the electric type’s introduction, one of Kazuya’s brows jerks upward. “That is an…interesting name.” Natsu, meanwhile, is unimpressed by the electric rat or its trainer. He didn’t care about what place this chocolate man held in the human hierarchy. They were here to battle not yap![break][break]

“I’m Kazuya, and this—” He pointed toward the With a look of determination, the fighting-type stepped to the starting line. “--is Natsu.” The bear slammed its paws together. Icy energy flickered between them.

Their main claim to fame is making others do things for them. Then, of course, came the smiles and political backstabbing. [break][break]

The bear turns to his trainer as the Pikachu charges forward. His fists flex as the mouse draws closer. Kazuya responds with a barely perceptible nod. “Catch it.” Natsu’s special ability allows him to take most hits like a tank. And, with his trainer’s practice, built up that endurance. Staggering back as the Pikachu hit him, the bear’s mitten paws moved to grab it.[break][break]

With a quick opponent, slowing it down is often the first course of action. Natsu grins. “Payback.” Dark energy coalesces around his paw as he tries to hit the rat with a powered-up attack.[break][break]

[attr="class","textbody"] Ollie remains unaware of the other's plights against him or bureaucracy, smiling all the way through the battle as if nothing is the matter.

[break][break] When his body slams into the other, Tofu assumes that the momentum of the force will be enough to knock the bear back. However, this doesn't seem to be the case. The Pikachu lets out a squeak of surprise as he feels claws rake against his body, and then a swell of agony as the PAYBACK struck him.

[break][break] It triggered the Pikachu to attack back. Energy illuminated him and the rest of the arena as it exploded with DISCHARGE.

Natsu does not get long to enjoy his hit. The second he digs his claws in, the Pikachu lights up like a blown transformer. The bear staggers backward as electricity courses through its shocked form. With its nerves temporarily fried, the Bewear has no choice but to drop the electric type. As it attempts to retaliate, it finds its limbs frozen. Paralysis.[break][break]

Kazuya knows it is a bad idea to grab an electric type. Without protection, that foolishness will only get you electrocuted. But his Bewear seems to have missed the memo. That or the number of skull hits he has taken turned his brain into a sieve. Unfortunately, the young Pokemon’s training is lacking in the range department. He prefers to get up close and personal with his targets. Much like Kazuya, he believes sniping to be the work of cowards.[break][break]

“Stay back!” The device at the older man’s belt calls out. The bear finally pushes a foot forward. “Hit back with Strength!” With a nod, the bear unleashes all of his willpower in a powerful wave of power. This aims to keep the little mouse on edge.

[attr="class","textbody"] "Whoo!" Ollie hollers after his partner, watching as the attack make it's mark just as intended. When the paralysis consumes the bear, it gives enough time to put some distance between the two of them.

[break][break] Tofu's strength is his speed. Compared to the Bewear, it's no one's suprise who will lose the gambit in a match of power and swiftness. So it's their best bet, Ollie thinks, to try to keep as much distance between them as possible. He opens his mouth to the Pikachu to tell him so, but Tofu is determined.

[break][break] He's stubborn.

[break][break] The Pikachu waits a second too long, because the STRENGTH overcomes him with a wave of energy that has him tumbling back onto the pavement. His recklessness is his undoing, a fact that Tofu learns as he stumbles back to his feet. His head dizzy.

[break][break] Wobbly, a DISARMING VOICE cuts through the air between them.

[attr="class","kazu2"]The difference between the pair is apparent. The Pikachu’s best tactic will be guerilla tactics. It should use its speed and range to its advantage. In doing so, it will whittle down the bear’s HP. It is what netted Robin Hood his victory and the way water weaned through mountains. To evade this fate, Kazuya knew their offense would have to be swift and domineering. This was not a time to tiptoe around attacks.[break][break]

But the electrocution aspect makes direct combat difficult.[break][break]

To win, this needed to be a steamrolling instead of a standoff. The Strength sends the smaller Pokemon flying like a tennis ball. When the electric type stands, he wavers on his feet like a palm frond in a hurricane. A few seconds later, another Disarming Voice erupts. “Go!” Knowing they cannot dodge noise, the Bewear charges into the cacophony. His teeth grit as the sounds tear into his ears. As he nears, he throws out an Ice Punch, hoping to freeze the electric type in place.

[break][break] Well, of course, as long as Tofu remained smaller than the opposing bear.

[break][break] Time to change the tide of things, then.

[break][break] "Let's show 'em, Tofu!" The Head Ranger raises his arm, band glowing with fierce light. The gleam of the League's insignia is visible as his uniform glows with golden light, causing his Pikachu to triple with catastrophic size. Beams take over the battlefield as the Pikachu covers the winter sun with his sheer size, casting shadow upon the bear as it casts it's fierce ICE PUNCH..

[break][break] The tiny fist is nothing in the face of a superhuman beast, to which Tofu grins fiercely.

[break][break] Ground trembles, cracking with the effort of a sudden surge, as a G-MAX VOLT tears through the atmosphere.

[attr="class","kazu2"]When facing a ranger—especially one of this caliber—one expects a certain modicum of skill. This entire battle, Kazuya had been partially on edge. The choice of Pokemon seemed strange, as did the strategies. But all becomes clear when Ollie raises his hands. Shit. This singular thought grows all confusing as the Pikachu swells into a monster. All of those watching are buried in the tide of its shadow.[break][break]

Expecting something tiny, Natsu punches accordingly. An attack meant to hit the Pikachu square in his tiny jaw now skates off layers of fat to hit a tiny foot instead. Normally inexpressive eyes go wide as he tilts his head back. But, even leaning back, he can’t see the Pikachu’s face. But that smirk can be felt. Before he can come up with any kind of battle plan, a powerful current surges through the battlefield. “Weaaaar!’ The noise is half roar and all pain. His entire body stiffens as the sparks continue washing over him.

Only his Fluffy ability stops him from collapsing into a heap at the Pikachu’s feet. Kazuya himself tenses as the electricity threatens to break free of the ring. Shaking, the Bewear forces his eyes open and his steps forward. A strange, dark energy coalesces around the ursine’s wrist as his trainer’s device buzzes: “Payback!” With stiff, jerky movements, Natsu moves to do just that.

[break][break] So Ollie can read the smugness from his face even staring at the back of his head as that attack thunders across the battlefield.

[break][break] But it's a trainer's job to keep their pokemon in check when they can.

[break][break] "On your guard!"

[break][break] The PAYBACK comes swinging, just as the Pikachu summon a MAX STEELSPIKE. The ground rumbles, splits, and creates crevices for grey pillars to come spinning up like drills, either to defend him or - more hopefully - pincer the bear into pieces.

[attr="class","kazu2"]The ground shakes. The attack is thrown slightly off kilter as he continues with his desperate punch. The second he sees steel, beady eyes widen. He wasn’t expect this kind of attack from such a little guy. Kazuya’s voice cuts clear across the panic. “Endure!” [break][break]

A golden energy envelops the bear as the first spike erupts. One takes him in his upper arm. Two more arise to trap the one opposite. A quick kick allows his lower body to avoid the damage. The final spike takes a tiny chunk out of his ear, leaving him bald in the process.
