Phew, that was a relief. Eddie was thankful that it turned out to just be a little chilly, and not that Shalin had some kind of mortal injury from the last fight. He'd played enough video games as a kid to know a death flag when he saw one. [break][break]

After reading Shalin's dialogue, Eddie imagined himself recalling his Paldean Tauros and retrieving his little Growlithe. She was small, sure, but Eddie knew firsthand that she was practically a furnace on four legs. The prospect of heading up to the next floor didn't seem particularly daunting at all with the little Fire type by his side. With that, Eddie selected the option to HEAD UP THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE WITH SHALIN. Sticking with his guide was likely the best course of action; no good ever comes from splitting the party.

Your vision fades to white momentarily as your head touches the plane of light obscuring the top of the spiral staircase. For a brief moment, you feel like you are weightless. As your vision fades back into view and the feeling of weightiness returns, you can feel great heat from behind you. Tilting your head, you see the heat's source: a white plane of light obscuring the bottom of the spiral staircase behind you. You can infer that the two halves of the staircase are linked to one another.[break][break]

The walls, floors, and ceilings of this upper floor are constructed out of what you know to be NEVER MELT ICE. The clear, starry sky above you, you peer through the semitransparent floor, able to see all of Mount Chimney beneath you.[break][break]

Shalin is next to you, leaning as low as she can on her Pyroar's back and holding her hands as close to the lion's blazing mane as possible in order to stay warm in the dangerous cold. You follow her onward.[break][break]

As you head into a rectangular chamber, two slabs of ice cover the west and east doorways, locking you in. Four Mr. Rime seemingly phased into existence from out of nowhere, passing through the very center of the north and south walls. With liberal use of ALLY SWITCH, they scatter, reappearing seconds later and firing crisscrossing PSYBEAMs at you and your Pokémon.[break][break]

The description of the icy upper floor of the palace produced a phantom chill in Eddie as the scene played out. If he had his druthers, he'd be back on the lower floors, but who was he to try and leave Shalin to whatever dangers lie in wait for them? Right on cue, the dangers presented themselves in the form of a series of infuriatingly dodgy Mr. Rimes. Eddie could imagine himself taking a swipe at one of them only for his fingers to catch the after-image of it's ALLY SWITCH. [break][break]

On the bright side, he didn't have to spend much time deliberating on which course of action to select. Now that the game was finally giving him a proper tanking option, he made his choice to GUARD SHALIN AND USE A POKEMON TO REFLECT THE PSYBEAM ATTACKS. Eddie wasn't sure if he had a Pokemon that could oblige the second part of the game's request, but he assumed he had more HP remaining than his companion, so he could at least make sure she didn't take another nasty hit. [break][break]

You tell Shalin to take cover behind you, your Pokémon using LIGHT SCREEN to bounce the PSYBEAMS back toward the Mr. Rime. As they become injured from absorbing the force of their reflected attacks, they start to become desynchronized. Your background as a WARRIOR lets you maintain the immense concentration needed to guide your Pokémon in deflecting the PSYBEAMS back and forth in what would be an intense tennis match.[break][break]

Though you manage to cause three of the four to fall, the last one teleports near Shalin and aims for her neck. Her Pyroar rears up to take the PSYBEAM for her, but is now quite a bit worse for wear. She is quick to raze the final foe with a gout of FLAMETHROWER. With the coast clear, she leads the way onward.[break][break]

You feel your stomach sink as you and Shalin find yourselves sliding down a tunnel of extremely slick NEVER MELT ICE, passing right through the floor that the door frame was built around. You come to the only conclusion possible: the small patch of ice near the door frame, and the entire room beyond, was an illusion![break][break]

After crashing into the wall on the far side of yet another ice-covered room, you find you have stumbled into quite the treasure trove: there are two treasure chests in the back corners of the room. You also locate, carved into the back wall, what appears to be a rough MAP of the Mirage Palace. While you have covered most of the west wing, there is an entire east wing you have not been to. Now, the question remains: how to get there?[break][break]

Shalin appears to be dazed from impacting the NEVER MELT ICE.[break][break]

The encounter with the Mr. Rimes went far better than Eddie had expected. He beamed when he realized he had been more or less been able to achieve his goal of keeping his party member safe, though it was a shame that it sounded like her Pyroar had suffered a pretty nasty blow. But they weren't out of the woods yet as he and Shalin were sent sliding through the tunnel of ice, and were deposited with a violent crash into what appeared to be a room full of loot. [break][break]

The next choice was another easy one, though, as Eddie selected the option to ATTEMPT TO SHAKE SHALIN OUT OF HER DAZE. First and foremost, he wanted to make sure she was okay, but there was a second, more pragmatic reason for his choice as well. Sure, he could have just opened the chests and taken all of the loot for himself, but Shalin seemed to be coded as a rather honorable and good character. Usually if a character in a video game had nefarious intentions (especially in an RPG such as this), there'd be little signs to give their intentions away. Eddie had no reason to believe Shalin would run off with any loot if he took the chance to secure her safety first, so there was no harm in ensuring her well-being before they started discussing the treasure they had just stumbled upon.

You shake Shalin out of her daze. She eventually comes to, thanking you profusely. She seems to have gotten over your abandonment of her earlier. She gets back on her Pyroar mount to stay warm in the extreme cold. "Oh wow, this is a huge vault! Let's take a look at it!" she cheers.[break][break]

The two of you open the two treasure chests, mist floating out of them. One of them contains what appears to be a blue piece of lightweight, but effective, body armor of some kind. It is cold to the touch, no doubt from the environment it was stored in, but not as cold as you would expect it to be.[break][break]

Inside the other is a transparent, white lens roughly the same size and shape as a hand mirror. Tightly slotted into a hollows near the lens' base is a marble of ABSOLITE. As you examine it, you catch a glimpse of something that looks different through it than it did outside the lens.[break][break]

"Wow, both of these are amazing! How about we each take one?" she suggests.[break][break]

Aw yeah, time for some sweet loot! [break][break]

Eddie carefully read the descriptions of both items while he considered his choices. First, there was the curious lens and it's marble of ABSOLITE; it looked like the strange object would probably be necessary for dealing with some upcoming puzzles, if it's peculiar qualities were any indication. But then there was the armor, which, outside of how lightweight it was, didn't appear to have any particularly special properties. On the other hand, any kind of armor would be a substantial upgrade for him, given that he was the tank and all, and maybe there was some kind of “equipment load” mechanic that would necessitate the armor being light in the first place. Having considered his options, Eddie selected his choice to OFFER TO TAKE THE VEST. It was time for an upgrade!

You obtain the BLUE VEST! This armor slightly reduces the amount of damage you take from enemies![break][break]

Shalin obtains the FORESIGHT LENS! Gazing through it lets her see the truth. Mysterious things are hidden everywhere! Using it consumes INFINITY ENERGY, so make sure to deactivate it when not in use.[break][break]

She peers through the device as you slip the vest over your clothes. It is at first cold to the touch, but it is comfortable to wear and offers protection that will surely serve you well. "Thank you so much!" she gratefully replies again. "Whoa, that wall!" she cries, still shivering from the extreme cold. She invites you to take a peek through it. As you observe your surroundings through the lens, you can see through illusionary sections of wall on the north and south bounds of the room where you fought the Mr. Rime.[break][break]

Shalin guides you through the false walls with ease. You are fascinated when she walks through the walls that, to you, look just as real as the real ones surrounding them! Beyond the false wall is an ice pedestal with a COMPASS at rest upon it. You take it with you after observing its needle points to the east instead of the north.[break][break]

You obtained the COMPASS! Now you can see the locations of many things hidden in the dungeon! This compass even has a new feature - you will hear a tone if a key is hidden nearby![break][break]

You feel you have thoroughly explored the west wing of the second floor. Shalin's shivering is starting to intensify, and she starts complaining about the cold.[break][break]

There was a lot more stuff in this room than Eddie had anticipated. His hunch about the armor had been correct, but the COMPASS was a nice little bit of icing on the cake. With it, he was able to scope out more of the dungeon, and hopefully come out of the venture with a nice chunk of loot that would help them going forward. [break][break]

That being said, Eddie found that his top priority was still the safety of his party. Just because he was able to shield Shalin in the last encounter didn't mean that they were out of the woods entirely. Considering how affected she was by this particularly frigid section of the dungeon, Eddie opted to check out the THE TEMPERATE HALLWAY next. Hopefully that meant Shalin could warm up and Eddie could help keep her from developing some sort of ailment.

You retreat to the temperate hallway before the explorer and her steed turn into a Shalinsickle. The warmth feels like a fireplace, hot enough to melt the frost from your garb, but not so hot to induce thermal shock.[break][break]

Once Shalin feels well enough to speak again, she does so, this time from the saddle of her Wyrdeer. "Did you notice anything unusual? Where haven't we been?" she asks, collating the information the MAP and COMPASS provide. "Did you notice anything out of place? If there were three false walls upstairs, it wouldn't surprise me if there were more elsewhere.[break][break]

Now it was time for some proper dungeon crawling, something that Eddie loved and loathed in equal measure. Exploration was fun and all, but he mostly found it to be a tedious exercise in exploring empty rooms until the next shiny bit of gear or enemy encounter popped up. But, it was an necessary evil in the RPG and adventure game genres, so he'd just have to put up with it for the time being. [break][break]

His brows furrowed as he pulled up the MAP from his inventory. He was never good at reading these things, but at least some of the loot was clearly labeled. Eddie just had to head towards that, right? Okay, easy enough; he selected the option to go to THE DOOR WEST OF THE ENTRANCE HALL. If he was reading the map right, there might be some loot in there!

You make your way back to the entrance hall without incident. As you undo the latch on the western door, it swings open loudly from a rush of scalding hot air beyond even the hottest summer you've ever lived through. The sound of bubbling magma, the sight of wavering Chandelure, and a staircase leading down into the magma are the first things you can see. You can't manage to stay in the room too long without feeling like your lungs are on fire! [break][break]

Unable to stand the brutal heat, Shalin beats a hasty retreat from the magma-filled room. As you hear her gasping for air, you make note of a large, metal valve connected to an even larger pipe. It looks like the valve can be turned, if you are brave or foolhardy enough to withstand the searing heat that touching the metallic apparatus would subject you to.[break][break]

A flush of embarrassment crept across Eddie's face when he realized, oh shit, he had mixed up something as basic as cardinal directions. Now he was paying for it as they entered a room that sounded like it was hotter than a Moltres' backside. Yeah, no, the 'hidden key' could remain hidden for all he cared; he decided to follow Shalin out of the room and back the way they came, selecting the option to HEAD NORTH OF WHERE YOU DISPATCHED THE BRAIXEN. Then maybe this time he could snag some loot without getting deep-fried in the process.

You head north past the double doors. The dining hall beyond is, unlike the rest of the derelict palace, well-maintained, as though someone is still living there. Your Pokémon can also hear faint, unidentifiable voices within the hall. [break][break]

The two of you start your investigation, finding that the dining hall's curtains, decorated with a Kantonian Ninetales motif, are in pristine condition. You can hear human-sounding murmurs surrounding the table, though there is not a trace of anyone at the table. Your vision is wavering back and forth more intensely than any other room in the mystic palace so far, as though you were in Hoenn's Great Desert during a blazing hot afternoon.

Shalin scans the room with the FORESIGHT LENS. Her mouth slowly opens as her eyes peer through the mysterious, INFINITY ENERGY-powered looking glass. Her skin turns pale as she momentatily stops, sends out a saddle-wearing Kommo-o, and jumps on, the two of them high-tailing it out of the room and disappearing through the north wall. You suspect it may be yet another false wall.[break][break]
