You yell for Shalin, who turns around and pokes her head through the now-obvious false wall to the north. "When I looked through the lens, this place looks just as worn-down as the rest of the palace. And it's... haunted. The ghosts of the royal family are still here." She goes on to describe large cracks in the table, tattered curtains, and even a chair with a leg missing. She also relays a message that seems to echo in your head:[break][break]

Huh, so his hunch was right; this place was extremely haunted, but at least the environmental storytelling was pretty clear. There was a puzzle to solve, specifically involving four foxes. That made the next choice pretty obvious; Eddie selected the option to RETURN TO THE ENTRANCE HALL AND EXAMINE THE STATUES. He'd never been particularly good at tests in school, but he at least knew well enough that if one of the options of a multiple choice question was contextually specific enough, then it was probably the right answer.

The human-like statues are carved with almost lifelike detail, each with a name etched into a faceplate. Upon further examination, they all seem to have the same last name; could these have been the palace's barons in its ancient past? Your close examination rewards you with a SMALL KEY. While you are unsure what it opens, it can't hurt to take it with you.[break][break]

You obtained a SMALL KEY! This key will open any one locked door. You can use it only in this dungeon.[break][break]

You feel you and Shalin have been thorough in your search of the Mirage Palace thus far. As Shalin vanishes through the false wall into a glass tunnel, you follow her. Beyond the false wall, you can see massive, translucent pipes, several of which have magma flowing through them. While it is difficult to see where all of them go to and from, you have a rough idea of how the magma flows. This leaves you with an educated guess that the left of the two doors at the end of the tunnel leads to a superheated room, while the right does not. With your MAP and COMPASS together, if the room to the left is superheated and the room to the west of the entrance hall is also superheated, you can deduce there is a good chance these two rooms are connected somehow.[break][break]

You spot a small treasure chest hiding in a corner. Unable to resist at least taking a peek inside, you procure a small red gemstone with the number "20" etched into it. You feel this could fetch a moderate amount of money from a museum.[break][break]

Curiouser and curiouser. He had been expecting a different sort of puzzle associated with the statues, maybe something involving moving them around, but Eddie was happy enough to take the SMALL KEY instead. The magma pipes behind the false wall also completely defied his expectations, but it reminded him of his last encounter with a super-heated room. [break][break]

In the last searingly hot room he had been in, there was a valve he had neglected to turn. Maybe if there was a similar valve in the next room, he could turn it and stymie the flow of the molten magma? Eddie decided to ENTER THE LEFT ROOM to see if his hunch was correct.

As you undo the latch on the western door, it swings open loudly from a rush of scalding hot air beyond even the hottest summer you've ever lived through. The sound of bubbling magma and and a staircase leading down into the magma are the first things you can see. You can't manage to stay in the room too long without feeling like your lungs are on fire! All you manage to observe in the first moments is the direction the staircase is pointing. It would not be unreasonable to believe that the two heated rooms are connected.[break][break]

Unable to stand the brutal heat, Shalin beats a hasty retreat from the magma-filled room. Unlike the last time, she seems unhealthily dizzy, her skin beginning to turn an orange-red, as though she were being cooked alive.[break][break]

Eddie imagined that he could feel the warmth radiating from his laptop's screen as he read the description of the superheated room. While he felt another nasty jolt of guilt at Shalin's health getting so precariously low, he was determined not to duck out of the room this time as she escaped the scorching rush of heat. Silently hoping that he'd still have the chance to toss her a heal once he was done, he decided to FURTHER EXAMINE THE SUPERHEATED ROOM; that valve had to be in here somewhere. [break][break]

Against your better judgment, and your health, you search the superheated room for a valve. Every breath chars your windpipe and lungs, every ember you inhale making you feel weaker. Despite pushing your body to its limits, all you find is a staircase leading into the magma. You conclude that the mechanism to drain the magma must be located elsewhere in the Mirage Palace.[break][break]

Out of fear for your life if you remain inside the chamber longer than necessary, you retreat. The temperature change makes you feel like you had just stepped into a freezer. It is refreshing at first, but your body begins to convulse from thermal shock. Although intensely painful, an internal pain your BLUE VEST does little to mitigate, you survive the convulsions. Shalin looks toward your badly burned skin with worry.[break][break]

Well, he really screwed up this time. [break][break]

Eddie's hunch was absolutely incorrect, and his failure had cost a little more precious health out of a bar that was already getting precariously low. He sighed with frustration and took his hands off the keyboard to rub at his temples. [break][break]

Maybe this wasn't a completely fruitless venture, though. One thing was now abundantly clear to him; the valve from the other magma room might control the dispersal of lava for both rooms in some way. Maybe going back to the first room and turning the valve would drain the lava from both rooms? Or maybe it would completely drain one room and totally fill the other? There was still some kind of trick to it, he surmised, because otherwise there wouldn't be a set of stairs leading down into the pool of magma below. [break][break]

Further speculation could wait for now, though. Returning to his laptop, he chose the option to USE A POKEMON'S HEALING MOVE TO SOOTH BOTH YOUR WOUNDS. He'd try and stave off the inevitable GAME OVER as long as he could, but Eddie wasn't all that confident in his ability to make it through the rest of the palace unscathed.

Using a Pokémon's healing move, you soothe your wounds and Shalin's. While it does not completely ease your pain, it makes it bearable. The transfer of energy does tap your healer Pokémon completely out of power; you doubt you can do this again.[break][break]

You enter the east room, which consists of a two-level labyrinth that would be easy to fly over... if it weren't for the myriad of Fire-type Pokémon ready to shoot you out of the sky! Volcarona, Magcargo, Centiskorch, and other Pokémon arm themselves with fire attacks. The alternative is to navigate the labyrinth, leaving the treasure chest above it above its metallic mesh ceiling behind.[break][break]

At the far end of the room, you see a large valve connected to a pipe similar to the ones you saw in the previous hallway. It looks like it may have been used to route geothermal power around the palace. To get there, you will need to cross the large room one way or another.[break][break]

Now that everyone was back up and running, it was time to assess his next course of action. [break][break]

Eddie could've kicked himself when he spotted the description of the valve he had been so desperately searching for in the previous room. So those efforts were for nothing, and a healing move was wasted in the process. Great, just wonderful. With a glimmer of agitation, Eddie considered the army of Fire-type Pokemon waiting in the wings. There was no guarantee that they wouldn't pursue them into the labyrinth if they weren't dispatched, and maybe Eddie also just wanted to vent some of his new frustrations with his previously poor play. Without much deliberation, he selected the choice to FIGHT YOUR WAY THROUGH THE FIRE POKEMON FOR THEIR TREASURE. Time for some pest control! [break][break]

And now, it was on to that stupid friggin' valve that had been so frustratingly elusive. Eddie looked over the options with some confusion; what was the purpose of having someone else turn the valve? He was probably strong enough for the task, but what if it was rigged to some kind of trap? [break][break]

Well, that just made the choice all the easier. Eddie selected the choice to ATTEMPT TO TURN THE VALVE YOURSELF. He was tough enough to take whatever the game had to dish out!

Your STRENGTH of a WARRIOR allows you to loosen the metal valve and turn it. After a few rotations, the valve gets blazing hot. The sound of bubbling magma fills your ears as the temperature of the room begins to rise dramatically. With no Pokémon in the room threatening you, you easily flee the burning room.[break][break]

After you leave, you look around the transparent tunnel and notice a shift in the magma flow. Most notably, there is no longer dangerous heat radiating from the door to the west. The two of you take a peek inside, and you see what could only be described as a drained magma reservoir. At its bottom is a tube easily large enough for you to walk or ride a Pokémon through. Not a single wild Pokémon is in sight.[break][break]

You are greeted with a similar-looking chamber at the other end of the tube. Checking your map, you find yourself inside the formerly-superheated room near the palace's entrance.

You advance west into the far southwest corner of the Mirage Palace. You see a similar-looking valve with an access tunnel whose entrance is readily visible and not masked. You are confident you can safely adjust the molten rock's flow here, if you wanted. Alternatively, in the very southwest corner of the room, you see an upwards-leading staircase that disappears into a bright, white light. "Could you imagine how big a city geothermal power like this could fuel?" she muses in amazement.

There are windows on the west side of the room, though you can see little through them from your current vantage point.[break][break]

The mysterious little tune was Eddie's cue that he had, in fact, finally solved the puzzle this time around. With a small fist pump and a murmured hell yeah! to no one in particular, Eddie was excited to see that he could finally move on. [break][break]

Now a whole new world of possibility was waiting for him, and he was spoiled for choice for where to go next. The thing that really caught his eye, though were the windows; where the heck could those lead to? Eddie selected the option to PEER OUTSIDE MORE CLOSELY, interested to see what might be lurking beyond. [break][break]
