Curiosity always paid off in dungeon crawlers like these, and Eddie was pleased as punch that he'd gotten a little extra treat for his efforts. But now it was time to move back to the real objective, one that Shalin had pointed out when she tried to ascend the spiral staircase. Eddie selected the option to TURN THE VALVE, assuming that it would redirect the lava flow to melt the ice blocking the way forward.

You turn the large valve until it becomes snug. You hear the sound of magma moving as an intense surge of heat radiates through the eastern entrance to the room you are in. After looking around, you can confirm that the palace's magma flow has been reverted to its initial state, except that you are now on the opposite side of the ultraheated room near the entrance. Deciding being broiled alive is too much of a health hazard, you ascend the staircase.[break][break]

With the presence of a lava tube radiating enough heat to melt the ice Shalin previously reported, it is trivial to use your flying Pokémon to cross the formerly-frozen passageway to the palace's east wing.[break][break]

(If you are playing with sound enabled, you hear a curious jingle, indicating the presence of a KEY somewhere in this room.)[break][break]

You emerge from the passageway in a long hallway filled with paintings of what were presumably the palace's barons. At the west end of the hallway is a locked door, and at the east end is another spiral staircase leading into blinding light, radiating intense cold.[break][break]

You perform a thorough search of the room but are unable to locate any KEYS.[break][break]

There was no way to go but forward, with the magma now blocking the way behind them and the new passage that they had gained access to ahead. The old paintings were a nice touch, Eddie thought, and they definitely gave the place that sort of “old timey castle/manor” vibe that was equal parts charming and eerie. But now wasn't the time to get distracted by the set dressing; there was a hidden key to uncover, because Eddie had, in fact, heard that little jingle that gave away it's presence. He selected the option to ask Shalin to search the room with the FORESIGHT LENS; that elusive little key was bound to be here somewhere!

Shalin searches the hallway with the FORESIGHT LENS. Gazing through its truth-revealing ABSOLITE glass, she reaches for one of the room's paintings. Her hand, then wrist, disappear through the painting as though it were not there. She manages to locate a SMALL KEY hidden behind what you could only presume is an alcove masked by the illusion of a painting.[break][break]

After retrieving the key, Shalin's breathing becomes noticeably heavier. With your Pokémon's healing energies tapped out, the search for a way to soothe her wounds and re-energize her becomes progressively more pressing.[break][break]

If it wasn't one thing, it was another. Eddie would've been a lot happier about getting the key if it didn't seem to take some sort of toll on Shalin's health. But there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it now, was there? All of his healing had been spent, so maybe this was just some sort of “ticking clock” mechanic meant to keep him from forever roaming about these halls. [break][break]

If that was the case, then they had to get a move on to make whatever progress they could before that inevitable GAME OVER. Eddie selected the option to OPEN THE LOCKED DOOR AT THE WEST END OF THE HALLWAY; that had to be the path forward, right?

You unlock the door. Beyond appears to be an abandoned kitchen, its spaces narrow enough that Shalin is forced to dismount and withdraw her Pokémon mount. There is plenty of visible evidence of large quantities of food having rotted away in cupboards and the like, though the lack of a pungent odor indicates it had completely dissolved a long time ago.[break][break]

Among ordinary sets of flatware, you find two stylized sets of flatware with names engraved on them, though they are in a script you do not recognize. They do look extremely valuable, though; selling these to the right person would net you a pretty hefty paycheck.[break][break]

You snd Shalin take a peek out the north windows, giving you a stunning view of a courtyard. There are life-sized statues of Pokémon, evidence of a hedge garden, athletic courts, and so forth. The courtyard's walkways are also surrounded by bubbling, glowing, red-and-orange goop, the entire place wavering with the radiating heat that felt like standing next to a powerful space heater from their great distance away. While there is a staircase leading down to the courtyard, going down there would be a death wish.[break][break]

Wasting food was damn near criminal as far as Eddie was concerned. He frowned as he inspected the long-abandoned kitchen, but his mood turned for the better at the mention of the bougie cutlery. Heck yeah, some extra cash would be awesome! [break][break]

Although, speaking of bougie, the view was something incredible to behold. This was like something out of one of those period dramas that bored him to tears, but at least it was all gorgeous to look at. Though then that did beg the question of whether or not the lava was here when this entire kingdom was built; maybe it was, because then how else would you explain all of the lava flow-altering mechanisms? But why the hell would anyone build their giant, luxurious castle in the middle of a friggin' volcano? Maybe it was just a rich people thing; Eddie always struggled to empathize with the upper crust of society. [break][break]

But he was getting side-tracked again; it was time to get moving! After some thought, Eddie selected the option to HEAD UP THE STAIRS IN THE EASTERN HALLWAY. Going downstairs would definitely be too hazardous with Shalin's current condition, and considering she had taken damage the last time she used the Foresight Lens, this option at least seemed like the safest one at first glance.

You leave the kitchen area and head up the staircase. The temperature quickly drops from uncomfortably warm to freezing cold. At the top of the staircase on the second floor proper is a locked door. You use your last SMALL KEY to proceed.[break][break]

What you saw beyond the locked door breaks your mind. You are standing on a massive pillar of ice, a bridge to nowhere built off its northeast corner. There is seemingly nothing supporting its opposite end; furthermore, a large block of NEVER MELT ICE, easily larger than either you or Shalin individually, is inexplicably floating in midair, as is a metal treasure box in the opposite corner. The void below is not solid white, but instead a wavering, Pidgeot's-eye view of the blazing courtyard you previously had a side view of from the kitchen.[break][break]

Surrounding the pillar's south and west edges is a thin, translucent, cubic dome of ice. The interior is hollow, allowing Pokémon and their trainers to walk through it. It is difficult to tell what is on the other side of the wall. The only things you can confirm the presence of are the same ice block you had seen from the west wing, as well as the wavering image of the courtyard. It, too, seems to be floating in midair.[break][break]

Out of the frying pan, and into the... deep freezer? Eddie recalled having seen some hallways and a staircase earlier that were similarly icy, but this was on a whole other level. The giant block of NEVER MELT ICE was almost sinister, like some frozen sentinel that had been waiting for them since the beginning of their journey. Between that and the vertigo-inducing void, Eddie was really starting to get the creeps. [break][break]

But there was also that chest there, and he was sure that some sort of exceptional prize must be waiting for them inside. It was simply a matter of how to get to it. Considering his options, Eddie first decided to INVESTIGATE WITHIN THE CUBIC DOME OF ICE. Maybe there was some kind of mechanism inside; if not, then he might take the chance of having Shalin look for that hidden KEY that the little musical chime indicated was near.

You investigate inside the ice dome while Shalin takes a look outside it with the FORESIGHT LENS. Across the void, you can see another metal chest, this one in an alcove that looks inaccessible. Shalin later enters the dome with you and looks through the dome with the FORESIGHT LENS. Her jaw drops as soon as she gazes through it.[break][break]

While it difficult to tell what she is saying through her intense shivering, it seems that in order to see invisible, icy walkways above the void of the fiery courtyard an unknown distance below, one person has to watch the other through the dome and the lens, guiding them across slippery walkways they can't even see. They are positioned in such a way that flying around them is not feasible. Talk about a trust exercise![break][break]

Things were rarely as they seemed in this place, so Eddie wasn't all that surprised to find that the ice dome had more going on than what initially met the eye. The invisible walkways that were revealed as their way to navigate across the void of the courtyard sounded harrowing to cross, but what choice did they have? Flying sure as heck wasn't going to cut it, but to make his way across, he would have to trust Shalin implicitly to keep him safe, or for her to trust him in equal measure... [break][break]

With that, Eddie selected the option to VOLUNTEER TO BE THE TRAVELER AND LET SHALIN DIRECT YOU THROUGH THE INVISIBLE MAZE. He hoped that he wouldn't soon come to regret that choice. [break][break]

You carefully follow Shalin's directions, Shalin guiding you around invisible walkways, ice walls, and even through false walls. Your fading mental acuity causes you to take a wrong turn. You take a step and feel nothing beneath you, nearly slipping. Such a fall, looking like thousands of feet, would have been lethal. Your mistake forces Shalin to expend more INFINITY ENERGY than she would have liked, pushing her body to its limits as she corrects it.[break][break]

At her direction, you push four large ice blocks over the edge of the invisible walkway, one at a time. A full thirty seconds later, a giant explosion booms from beneath you, the force of which tests your balance, but you are otherwise okay. You bravely press on, reaching the ornate, metal chest. It contains something very important: a golden key with a male Pyroar's head engraved at its top.[break][break]

You obtained the BOSS KEY! Now you can get into the chamber where the Boss lurks.[break][break]

Shalin, with bated breath, yells toward you. She reports that beyond the treasure chest that contained the BOSS KEY, there is an invisible, icy path to a hidden alcove that corresponds with a treasure indicated on your COMPASS. It is clear that the screaming, especially in such cold conditions, is taking its toll on her...[break][break]

Eddie could have sworn that he felt the fall in real life; the sensation of sailing through infinity, to an unkind ground below. He shuddered at the thought of it, and was thankful that his companion had spared him what would have been a pretty terrifying GAME OVER. [break][break]

But still, time and time again, she continued to push forward and guide him at the expense of her well-being over the course of this dungeon. Maybe that was just the reality of the game, or maybe Eddie was just that lacking as a player. But he couldn't fail her now, could he? Not when they were so god damn close. She was trying her hardest for him, and so he should do the same in turn, no matter the struggles of this labyrinth or the perilous explosion that threatened to send him hurtling off into the void once more. Any other choice felt like a waste when his virtual companion had done so much already, so without any hesitation, Eddie chose to PRESS ONWARD ACROSS THE CATWALKS WITH SHALIN'S GUIDANCE. He hoped that she could hold on a little longer until he could take down whatever foe was waiting for them. [break][break]

With her waning strength, Shalin guides you all the way around the chamber and to the hidden alcove you saw before. Inside the well-hidden treasure chest is a bottle of BLUE POTION.[break][break]

You obtained a dose of BLUE POTION! Drink it to fully restore health and INFINITY ENERGY. Gone after one use.

She carefully guides you back most of the way before collapsing within the dome. Thankfully, you are able to remember the rest of the way back on your own. You rush into the ice dome to find her leaning against its side in some of the worst posture you have ever seen. Shalin is barely moving, and her skin is turning pale, with patchy frostbite. You decide to carry her downstairs, where it is much warmer.[break][break]

When you return to the courtyard, you see a chaotic mess of solid rock covering it, as though it were a war zone. It seems that the ice blocks from above violently mixed with the lava, causing a massive explosion that renders the steam-filled courtyard almost unrecognizable from its previous blazing state.[break][break]
