They do not pay the new challenger any attention. Warm tears stream down their face. Whatever happened in the room beyond has left this teen, barely old enough to be called a man by the law, with wounded pride.[break][break] The gentle clack of Tauros leather boots on a tiled floor signals another follows from the same room. Michael Navidson, Navy to most, Sheriff Navidson to others, Pale Rider in the dream of a rusted sword, steps out. His gunmetal eyes betray no hint of his feelings towards the outburst of emotion.[break][break] They turn on the assassin, assessing her. His lips favor her with a soft smile. Standing up straight, he regards her with a tip of his wide-brimmed brown hat.[break][break] “ You must be my next challenger.” His words are warm, spoken in an acquired drawl. The voice is caught between city slicker and small town cop, with the oddest dash of Galarian lord mingled in on the first word.[break][break] “ Pleasure to meet you. Call me Navy. This little guy one of the Pokemon you’re gonna challenge the gym with?” Cin, too, is afforded a smile. “ Respect the choice. Everyone comes in here swinging with their biggest, baddest Pokemon. They forget the gym’s a great place to train.” Turning, he waves her in, hoping she’ll follow him into the room beyond. There sits a pitch, housed in four sterile walls.[break][break] “ ’Fore we get started, wanna ask you a question. What’re you after? Just trying to train your Pokemon?” He poses the question as he takes his place on one of the two raised platforms in the room, affording trainers a post from which to speak and plan.
