conflict brews within him the same way it always has only now more restless, as though swaying to one side would lead to damning inevitabilities he can't seem to avoid or prevent any longer. how does one make such a decision? not on a whim.[break][break]

and so, he's asked lam logan out to the ranch today for a casual picnic by the lake. a blanket's already laid out across the grass along with a basket of food and drinks, ready for his friend's arrival.[break][break]

for now, matias sits by the lakeside, idly skipping stones that never make it far enough.

If he’s being honest, Lam can’t really remember the last time they actively hung out. It doesn’t exactly feel like intentional distance or a divide so much as busyness.[break][break]
Or maybe it is, he doesn’t know. Just that it’s not intentional on his end, and outside of league-oriented matters, their paths haven’t crossed much.[break][break]
But all the same, regardless of the cause— it feels a bit important to take MATIAS SILPH up on the offer to meet up.[break][break]
“Hey,” one hand wiggles loose of its pocket prison to life lazily in greeting, “long time, no see.” He skirts along the edge of the picnic blanket and plops down across from Matias.[break][break]

He meets that smile with easy familiarity. He’s a far more welcome sight than that strange alt!Matias they’d run into. Was that the last time Lam had seen Matias? That had been ages ago— a puttering guilt circulates his system.[break][break]

“I could say the same for you.” His arms loop around his knees comfortably where he sits.[break][break]

“Busier than I’m used to being,” he shrugs, “guess I signed up for that, though. Oh— I got engaged over the holiday. That’s new.” That was big, right?[break][break]

It’s news he shares awkwardly, never had been all that great in talking about himself in this way. Especially when it came to sentimental things. He twists the new ring on his finger, fidgeting.[break][break]

“Oh, thanks, Mat. Always prepared, I appreciate it.” All he initially reaches for is a can, first one his fingers close around. “What about you, though? Didn’t manage to run into you at the tourney. You been alright?” He can’t put his finger on it, and he’s by no means a mind reader, but when he’d approached, Matias had seemed almost lost in thought. maybe it was just spacing out, or maybe it was more than that.

he masks his genuine surprise with the click of his tongue and a quip reserved only for the closest of friends; friends who still remain despite all the wrong he has done, at least.[break][break]

but aside from all of that, he is happy for lam logan, and it shows in the way he smiles at them. he's stuck on a thought that he has to clarify before he's able to move on to himself.[break][break]

Normally, he’d be inclined to insist that he prefers to go with the flow of what feels right, but in this instance, Lam agrees. “I know, I know,” he replies with a sigh.[break][break]
After a moment he gives a thumbs up, a corny smile tacking itself to his face. “But he said yes, sooo…yay?” Of course it’s a yay.[break][break]
He’s a little more concerned with whatever it is that’s going on with Matias, though. Only he deflects, veering away from Lam’s returned questions.[break][break]
His expression turns pensive, brows furrowing. “Ah, well… I'm not sure. I guess I haven’t asked anyone yet.” He laughs, “Sometimes we have half a mind to go to the town hall in Lilycove and be done with it.”[break][break]
That’s more his mentality, though, and Ikarus Rook is way too much of a romantic to skip out on an actual ceremony. Not that Lam would ever deny his partner every whim possible.

Again, his smile turns sheepish. Awkward with the continued attention.[break][break]

He wonders if it’s a sort of bittersweet news for Matias to hear, with everything that had changed over the last year and his own canceled engagement. Or maybe he’s over it, Lam isn’t sure. It’s not like they talk about those sorts of things. Not usually.[break][break]

Actually, he’s probably more apt to get all sentimental with CIAN MAHER.[break][break]

He doesn’t consider the sentiment disingenuous, though. He can sense the earnest intent behind Matias’ words. But it does little to quell the uncertainty from earlier.[break][break]

“Before and after?” He laughs, brows raising, “You entering a party animal phase?” A lighthearted joke, before he shifts back toward the other. “For real, though. What’s up?”

“Have you?” he laughs, shrugging. Lam doesn’t actually know, not really. He supposes they technically met at a club, didn’t they? But Lam has never been much of a hard partier himself, so that was genuinely more of a matter of chance.[break][break]
Any laughter, though, falls away as MATIAS SILPH chooses to forego any remaining deflection.[break][break]
“Sure, shoot.” Lam’s expression crinkles as he waits. Unsure of what it is that he’s seeking, to ask someone like him.[break][break]
Apprehension only follows, though he has no real reason to be wary.[break][break]
Lam can apparently still find it in him to laugh, albeit skeptically. “You know who you’re talking to, right? The second path, without question.” Lam has never been the sort of person to seek power or exert it over other. His life even now is built around the things that make him feel secure.[break][break]
So he wonders if Matias expected this answer of him before he even asked.[break][break]

“Though, I guess…” he hums, eyes falling his hands in thought, “what sort of control? Over others, or yourself?”

Another huff of laughter. “If I were you, I’d seek further clarification, which is what you’re doing.”[break][break]

He flops backward, hands folding up under his head as he stares upward. Eyes aimlessly following the lazy path of the clouds over. Light, fluffy ones. Far from stormy.[break][break]

“Well, I think..” Lam’s words lull, and he picks through them with care, “that in that case, it would be even more important to stick with stability.”[break][break]

Not looking over at Matias, he adds a question of his own, “Aren’t you tired?”[break][break]

Of like, literally, everything that pulled at him?[break][break]

“I guess, I just mean like– sure, it might be more natural then to pick power and control, but is that really what you want? Or is it what’s good for you?”[break][break]

He’s not the most opinionated person–not as apt to speak his mind, or dictate the actions of his friends. But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t observed bits and pieces. Or that he’s forgotten that day on the border. “Am I talking too much?”

it is literally impossible for matias to tire, at least in the physical sense, but mentally? his mind has been at war for years, never able to find much of a break.[break][break]

A crooked, wry smile crosses his lips. His head flops to the side to look at Matias. “I don’t mean fatigue of the body.”[break][break]

His hand curls into a loose fist as it thumps once against his chest, then it shifts upward to tap at his temple. “Here.”[break][break]

The soul-deep kind. The bone-weary kind.[break][break]

And if Matias denied it, then Lam wasn’t about to buy it. It’s there in the drift of his eyes and the heft of the sigh he releases. Like he wants that sigh to expel the weight, but it never quite does the trick.[break][break]

“I’d argue that living here has started to turn into an act of survival,” he remarked lightly, though his mouth set itself in a thin line. “What else is there?”[break][break]

It’s not a nosy question, but an earnest one. Asked as starts to brew in the center of his chest as Matias continues. [break][break]

“Maybe. I guess that depends on what you mean by survival.”
