When Matias doesn’t elaborate, he’s not all too surprised. He’d like to press. Eek out of him what good he’s found here, because surely it isn’t all for nothing. But his companion is already moving on, and Lam’s eyes continue to follow the movement of wild pidgey flying overhead.[break][break]

He wants to say, then why ask? if he already knows. but maybe Matias just needs to hear it outloud. To make it sink in. Maybe it will mean something more, for some mysterious reason that is far beyond Lam’s understanding right now.[break][break]

And maybe it’s not exactly as pristine as Matias might expect. “I think I would feel the desire to save myself, probably. But I couldn’t do that, no.” Not when he’d built something here, not when he had someone that he’d sacrifice any and every part of himself for, over again. Tenfold.[break][break]

Then the question really sinks in, drops to the pit of his stomach like a stone.[break][break]

Lam’s expression falls then, and he sits up– turning toward Matias with sharp eyes. “What’s going on?” He doesn’t ask as much angrily, but there is fretfulness and apprehension. If he hadn’t been worried before, this question does the trick. “Is something happening?”

Lam snorts, and finally his lighthearted responses err toward irritable. Not enough to be angry, but enough to be skeptical of what Matias says. How he tries to be reassuring.[break][break]
“Yeah. Don’t believe that by a longshot,” he remarks simply, and ruffles a hand through the green tangles of his hair. Even if he’s in his own head–and that, Lam understands with painful acuteness, there’s no way something isn’t brewing under the surface.[break][break]
Exasperation twines through a heavy exhale, and his lips press into a thin line. His stare is hard, maybe resigned.[break][break]
“I don’t know what’s going on,” and he doesn’t like the foreboding feeling this conversation provokes, “but I haven’t changed your mind, have I?”[break][break]
About what, he doesn’t know, but the outcome feels like it’d always be the same.

the half-laugh, half-snort he lets out is amused but also tainted in bitterness as though it comes from a grudgeful place, one void of hope.[break][break]

it must be so tiring to be matias' friend, he realizes, because whatever support given, he tosses aside. he tries to reassure lam logan with a shrug of his shoulder.[break][break]

“Thought so.” His voice is a bit defeated as he sighs, shoulders sagging despite the fact that he still tries to offer the other a mild smile of understanding.[break][break]
It figures, really.[break][break]
It can be difficult to feel like he’s talking to a brick wall when it comes to offering advice to Matias. It’s difficult to know that whatever he does, Matias will no doubt choose to do things his own way– often alone. But that doesn’t mean he’s the sort to write his friend off because of that.[break][break]
That’s just not how Lam operates.[break][break]
And he is just as stubborn in his own ways. His concern doesn’t dissipate, nor will it in the time that follows. Lam digs his heels into it silently, even when it’s futile. He doesn’t just leave.[break][break]
But he’s honest too. “Also unsurprising. You’re lucky, you know,” he shakes his head and scoffs quietly. Not unkindly, but he stares out at the lake ahead instead of at Matias. “For the few people who haven’t written you off. Why ask for their opinions if they can’t? What’s the point?” If anything, he’s curious.
