After double checking their supplies at one of the research stations Nenet and Zev pause for a moment to peer out over the Great Chasm before ducking into one of the nearby opening maws that lead to the depths below.

Crystals releasing a dull glow jutted up from the ground to illuminate their path as Nenet made her way into the tunnel system with Zev by her side. For a fleeting moment she was reminded of their trip to the Ultra Crater as a turn in the path plunges them into a a few seconds of darkness before tera crystals light their path again.

"Do you sense anything left of Kyurem," Nenet asks Zev absently as she fishes out a small shovel from her bag.
[break][break]
Pausing them at one of the smaller crystal clusters she begins to carefully hack away at the rock and dirt around the cluster to try and see its true size and whether it could be retrieved. Thinking better of her current plan, she passes a flashlight to Zev and murmurs to him, "Hold this," before resuming to her digging.

Zev had little interest in exploring the Giant Chasm and the vast cave network underneath it, collectively dubbed Area Zero. However, Team Rocket's research department needed the muscle provided by Beasts and grunts of similar skill. [break][break]

So when Neffatari Nzingha mentioned her interest in surveying the new landscape, he offered to go with her. [break][break]

When she stopped along the wall of one tunnel, he took the flashlight from her without objection. Standing over her, he pointed the beam of light at a chunk of Tera crystals that had captured her attention. [break][break]

Nearby, his Genesect stood as sentinel. [break][break]

"Nothing now," Zev replied, reaching out with his unnatural senses to pick up any useful signature. "Back on the battlefield, Kyurem's Infinity Energy was tremendous. I had a feeling that if I tried consuming it, devastating things would happen." [break][break]

"But right now, I don't sense anything like it. Palkia must have sent it away somewhere far. Either that, or the seal it used is very strong." [break][break]

Not for the first time, his thoughts wandered to the Spatial Pokémon. It had not appeared simply to provide assistance in Hoenn's defense, but to form a contract with a mortal. [break][break]

What powers did illeana reyes have now? What threat did she pose to Zev's—and therefore, Necrozma's—plans? He'd have to hunt her down soon and find out. [break][break]

Her tone idle, Nenet muses aloud to her husband, "Can you sense other Avatars without knowing they're one?"

A dull 'thunk' fills the air and the small crystal pops free of the ground. Humming softly, Nenet holds the small crystal in the light, turning it this way and that, before she reaches into her pack. Releasing Pyroar from her pokeball, Nenet holds the tera crystal nearer the lion, who snuffs curiously at it. With a woosh of energy, Pyroar terastalises.

The crystal in her hand dulls immediately, and after a few minutes the phenomenon dissipates from Pyroar as well.

"Interesting," Nenet murmurs. Discarding the crystal she stands and begins to make her way deeper into the tunnel system, trusting Zev to follow.

Zev considered Nenet's question as he watched her pick up the detached Tera crystal. [break][break]

"Not precisely. Everything gives off an Infinity Energy signature, some more than others," he said. "There have been times when I've noticed the heightened signature of Avatars and times when I haven't." [break][break]

He did not know that the appetite for Infinity Energy was diminished in him, compared to when Chu-e Choi had been under Necrozma's influence. [break][break]

Zev paused to watch Nenet's Pyroar undergo Terastallization without the aid of a Tera Orb. "I've seen that happen before, whenever there was a large concentration of Tera crystals in an area," he said, thinking back to the battle against Chien-Pao in the Cave of Origin. [break][break]

Suddenly, a robotic cry echoed through the cavern system. Tensing, he whirled around, trying to pinpoint the direction of the noise. But the sound echoed through the tunnel; it could have come from anywhere. [break][break]

"We should keep moving," Zev urged Nenet, beckoning with a hand. If something hostile was stalking the area, they were better off leaving than sitting around. [break][break]

Nodding at the information supplied, her head tilts subtly in thought as Zev mentions having seen terastallisation without a Tera Orb before.

Before she can piece together anymore thoughts, however, a metallic cry startles her; beside her Zev twists to try and identify the source of the sound while her own Pyroar release a low rumble in return. Not waiting, she takes Zev's hand and she points back the way they came.

What should have been an easy path back towards the outside proves oddly difficult. What should have been a straight shot instead sends them into a cavernous dead end; the sound of trickling water fills the air, and the increased humidity promises a pool nearby.

Frowning deeply, Nenet release Zev's hand as she says, "How did we lose the path?"

Zev shook his head, refusing to believe they had gotten lost. [break][break]

"The tunnel leading back up to the chasm should be nearby," he insisted. They had reached a fork in the path, with no sign indicating which one would bring them to the surface. Turning to his Genesect, he ordered it, "Scout ahead and find the exit for us." [break][break]

The insectoid Pokémon uttered a shrill cry of acknowledgement before transforming into its flight mode and zooming off down one of the tunnels. [break][break]

Just then, the ground trembled. Then again, and again. Zev frowned, recognizing the rhythmic quaking as the stride of a large Pokémon. Just as he suspected, a Great Tusk emerged from around the corner. [break][break]

It caught sight of them and uttered a tremendous, earth-shaking bellow. Its front foot pawed at the ground in agitation. [break][break]

"Nenet," Zev warned, stepping in front of her defensively. Black crystals raced to cover his body. [break][break]

The Great Tusk charged. [break][break]

Watching Genesect disappear, Nenet reaches out a hand to press against the tunnel wall to steady herself when the ground abruptly shakes. She blinks in surprise, her golden eyes darting around the area when a Great Tusk reveals itself.

Her mind blanking for a bare moment, she watches as Zev steps in front of her and the Pokemon charges. Snapping out of it as the Great Tusk bears down on her husband, Nenet barks out a sharp, "Frost Breath!" to her Pyroar.
[break][break]
Pyroar snarls and barrels forwards, her mouth parting for icy vapor to spill onto the air. The Great Tusk slams into the attack and trumpets its displeasure; it pulls up short of striking Zev and rears up in an effort to escape the ice attack.

"We need to leave," she urges Zev - but the question as to which path to take remained a mystery.

Zev had steeled himself for the impact, the crystals along his arms growing into deadly spikes to wound the Great Tusk. But the collision never came. Nenet's Pyroar made sure of that. [break][break]

Trumpeted in pain and fury, the Great Tusk turned upon the Pyroar. Lurching forward, the Paradox Pokemon attempted to counter with HEAD SMASH. Zev scrambled backward to stay out of the way of the battling Pokemon. [break][break]

Nenet's voice cut through the cacophonous noise of combat. He retreated to her side, nodding at her urging. "We should follow Genesect," he suggested, already ushering her down that tunnel with a clawed hand. [break][break]

As if on cue, Zev heard a victorious cry from down that path. Up ahead, the light of Tera crystals gleamed on the distant carapace of his Genesect as it flew back toward them. [break][break]

A thundering Hyper Voice sounded from Pyroar as she took the brunt of the Great Tusk's Head Smash. The rock around them shook perilously, but nonetheless Nenet finds Zev safe and sound by her side once more.

She nods in agreement that they should follow Genesect, and looks up gratefully when said Pokemon appears. Wordlessly she follows Zev's directive and they run down the tunnel towards Genesect; behind them the sounds of the scuffle continue, with Pyroar holding her own against the Paradox Pokemon.

As they approach a turn in the system, she calls over her shoulder to Pyroar, "Protect and return!" They would hopefully be in the open soon enough, and Pyroar was hardly a Pokemon she wished to leave behind.

Realizing the situation, Genesect stopped and turned in midair, crying out for the humans and Pyroar to follow. Running for the surface, they burst out of the darkness and into the fresh air of the Giant Chasm just as a tremendous earthquake shook the ground. Instinctively, Zev grabbed at Nenet to steady her. [break][break]

Far behind them, the Great Tusk bellowed in outrage but did not follow. [break][break]

As they caught their breaths, Zev scanned their surroundings to orient himself. "I see the research station up ahead," he said, releasing his wife to point at the encampment in the distance. He uttered a word of praise to his Genesect, then turned once more to Nenet. [break][break]

"Your Pyroar did well down there. You've improved as a trainer," he said, meaning it. A rare, satisfied smile touched his lips. "Though I think that's enough action for one day." [break][break]
