Gunner nodded as he listened carefully to the scientist in charge of the research station. One of many recently built by the League, it stood nestled in a stretch of jungle overlooking a waterfall in the Giant Chasm. [break][break]

Various personnel bustled about the station, carrying samples obtained from the surrounding wilderness or entering data gathered from them. The energy of the encampment was electric, full of hope and excitement for new knowledge. [break][break]

However, discovery did not come without danger. Reports of Paradox Pokémon attacks had reached Ever Grande City, prompting the League to send aid in the form of seasoned trainers. Gunner was one such agent. [break][break]

"I understand, ma'am. Thank you for explaining the situation," he said before turning to his assigned partner. jack wainwright seemed to cross his path more frequently of late. "Since the Pokémon come up the main path, we should set up barricades of some kind to deter them. What do you think?" [break][break]

Nearby, Gunner's newest acquisition—a robotic version of the mythical Terrakion that experts had come to call Iron Boulder—stood stock still, appearing more like a statue than an actual Pokémon. The station's scientists gave it a wide berth and more than a few nervous glances. [break][break]

Jack wasn't surprised when he received the assignment to report to the Giant Chasm. From the sounds of things, it was all hands on deck with the League. The flurry of activity taking place at the research station still surprised him, even considering how much resources had been pouring into the area.[break][break]

He listened intently to the scientist as she explained the situation, standing a little behind Gunner as the man took the lead. When Gunner asked his opinion on strategy, Jack was surprised but quick with an answer. "That makes sense to me. We could probably throw up some earthworks pretty fast with the help of your big guy over there," Jack inclined his head to Gunner's Iron Boulder stood, "kind of like we do with forest fire containment."[break][break]

"Or..." he said as he caught sight of a pile of unused wooden building materials, "we could build some scatter jacks. They wouldn't make a good barricade but we could set them up to funnel anything coming up the road into an easily defendable choke point. That would be less disruptive for the expeditions moving material further down the chasm, too."[break][break]

Now that his imagination was spinning, Jack walked confidently to where they would set up whatever they decided on as his Iron Moth hovered silently behind him. Mentally envisioning how their barricade would be placed as he walked, he nearly stumbled over strange tracks that had hardened into the ground.[break][break]

"Hey Gunner, check this out," he called to his partner. "These tracks don't look like other's I've seen down here."[break][break]

Gunner contemplated the unused wooden building materials as Jack shared his ideas. "Scatter jacks are a better idea," he agreed. [break][break]

Already, he was placing them in the wilderness surrounding the station in his mind's eye when the other man called him over. Gunner walked over at a brisk pace, curiosity piqued. When he neared Jack, he saw the tracks, too. [break][break]

Gunner inhaled sharply. A cold sweat broke out all over his body, and his stomach felt hard as a stone. His heartbeat kicked into high gear. [break][break]

"What is that?" he whispered, feeling faint. Shaking, he pressed his hand against his forehead, bewildered by the sudden need to flee in terror. "What's going on?" [break][break]

Nearby, the tall grass rustled as something sinister crept toward them. [break][break]

"Gunner?" Jack swiveled toward the man with concern filling his voice. Taking in his partner's stricken expression and sudden sweating, Jack instantly kicked into field triage protocol.[break][break]

"Hey mate, just focus on me for a bit. Everything will be alright," Jack said, keeping his voice calm though adrenaline was coursing in his veins. Jack reached for the man's wrist, attempting to take his pulse and hoping he wouldn't break away or struggle. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of movement in the grass even as his mind was racing through field interventions for cardiac events and panic attacks.[break][break]

Before he could break his focus from Gunner, Jack's Iron Moth was already moving. Its wing panels moved in irritated little flicks as it hovered past them with fire spinning around its metal body. When the Iron Hands lurched into the open, its paradox cousin bathed it in flames from its fiery dance, causing Jack to step in front of Gunner to block the heat.[break][break]

Jack's touch snapped Gunner out of his sudden panic, grounding him to the present moment. He stared at the Ranger, at a loss for words to explain what had just happened. Then brilliant orange-yellow flame lit up the area as Jack's Iron Moth attacked the wild Iron Hands that had just burst forth from the undergrowth. [break][break]

"I'm okay!" Gunner replied, hoping the tremor in his voice wasn't audible. Pulling away from Jack, he took a steadying breath and forced himself to focus. [break][break]

You've been through worse, he reminded himself. Then, out loud, he ordered, "Owain! Flank it!" [break][break]

The Iron Boulder barreled forward, striking the Iron Hands with HORN ATTACK. [break][break]

"Whatever happens, we need to keep it from entering the research station," Gunner reminded Jack, feeling more like himself now that he was in the midst of battle. [break][break]

As Gunner snapped out of it, Jack nodded resolutely. Turning back to the attacking paradox pokemon, he made a mental note to see that Gunner got a medical check when they got back to the research station.[break][break]

With Owain flanking the attacker, Jack took heed of Gunner's reminder to keep it away from the research station. "Let's pinch it between them then," Jack agreed. "Iron Moth, use your sludge wave to push it back against your partner."[break][break]

The controlled wave of sludge burst out of his Iron Moth, crashing into the Iron Hands. While the poison was not as effective as Jack had hoped it would be, the force of it slowed their foe's advance, leaving it between their two pokemon with nowhere to run.[break][break]

"Nice work," Gunner encouraged, addressing both Jack and the two Pokémon battling the Iron Hands. [break][break]

As the poison from the Iron Moth's attack forced their enemy on its back foot, the Iron Boulder saw its opening. Swinging its great head, it sliced at the Iron Hands with SACRED SWORD. A robotic screech ripped from the injured Pokémon, before it countered with THUNDER PUNCH. [break][break]

"Just a little more, I think," Gunner said, certain that Owain could take the beating. "It's two against one, so we have the upper hand." [break][break]

As the Iron Boulder reeled from the electrifying attack, the Iron Hands whirled upon the Iron Moth, attempting to blast it away with WHIRLWIND. [break][break]

Jack flushed at the praise, feeling that familiar joy of battle pounding in his ears. While there was danger involved, this wasn't the life, death, or torture stakes of battling Team Rocket or the desperate struggle for survival he experienced in Galar. This was pure, unadulterated pokemon battling.[break][break]

The hits exchanged between Owain and the Iron Hands looked brutal and the sound of them had him wincing. As Jack was preparing to go on the offensive again, the Iron Hand's whirlwind sent his Iron Moth spinning through the air, crashing back up the path. Seeing the opening, the Iron Hands began marching forward and upward toward the research station.[break][break]

"Give it the same treatment," Jack shouted to his pokemon as it regained the air. With a concerted flap of its wings, his Iron Moth sent hurricane winds blasted down at the Iron Hands. It was ready for it, bracing it's large body against the whipping winds. While it was no longer able to advance, it was also not pushed backward.[break][break]

"Now, Owain!" Gunner yelled when he saw that the Iron Hands was hunkered down against the HURRICANE. [break][break]

His Iron Boulder charged, its horns glowing with psychic energy. And then it rammed into the Iron Hands, tearing into it with PSYCHO CUT. The enemy Pokémon cried out from the pain before collapsing, unconscious and defeated. [break][break]

Gunner jogged over to Owain and patted the Iron Boulder on its shoulder. "Great job in your first battle," he said to the Paradox Pokémon. Owain didn't seem to care; it neither moved nor made a sound in response to the praise. [break][break]

Turning back to Jack, Gunner suggested, "We should hand this one off to the scientists. Maybe they can glean some information about this place from the Pokémon found here." [break][break]
