He’s never very good at these house calls, but he feels it prudent. Beau Fontaine is the only other gym leader Dewford has ever had, since the troubles began years ago. He was the only other person who was willing to take up the mantle of defending this small town on the edge of everywhere and nowhere. Just from that, he finds nobility in the man’s character.[break][break]
So, he parks his truck outside wherever the man is staying, gets out, walks up to the door. A brisk knock, and soon enough, he has an answer. He wonders how he must look to the guy, dressed up like a cowboy, driving up in a truck marked with the sigil of Dewford’s sheriff’s department.[break][break]
“Mr. Fontaine? My name’s Navy. I’m your successor, down at the Dewford gym.” A short, polite, out of place bow accompanies the words. He remembers courtesies from another life spend in Galar. “I was really glad to hear you’d moved back. May I talk to you ‘bout some stuff? Feels prudent I catch you up to speed on the town, even if you’re not working for the League anymore.”

A muffled, shouted reply resounds from deeper within the small house through the closed door, not that the visitor would remotely be able to make out any of the words associated with the aforementioned reply. A moment passes, then the door creaks itself open in short, slow movements - squeak, squeak, squeeeak - nosed open by a rheumy-eyed Snubbull. Huffing indignantly from its exertion, it sits plaintively on its hindquarters with a wheezy cough, peering up at the sheriff with an assessing gaze.

A moment later, Beau himself appears in the entryway, drying his hands on a kitchen towel, and offering an abashed grin. "Sorry 'bout that, caught me in the middle of makin' lunch," he explains. Crouching down, he offers the Snubbull a friendly pat and a murmured, "Thanks, brah!" before he straightens, tucking the end of the towel into his pocket and offering the other man his hand for a shake.

"Name's Beau, my dude, nobody calls me Mr. Fontaine unless I'm in trouble. Am I in trouble?" he thinks to add, lifting his eyebrows in mild, momentary concern before the rest of Navy's introduction sinks in. "Oh man, really good to meetcha!" he effuses, stepping back from the doorway and gesturing for the other man to come in.

"Get in here, brah, I've got a chair with your name on it!" he grins. "I'm glad somebody's takin' care of the place, I couldn't really help bailin' when I did. Family stuff, gotta help where you gotta help, right?" He moves into the living room - a little cluttered, a few boxes stacked in the corners, but managing to look comfortably lived in. He sits on a low chair that looks like it's seen better days and gestures to the couch and a matching chair opposite.

"Fire away - I'd love to hear anything you can tell me. I just got back from helpin' my uncle in Petalburg and I'm still settling in - sorry 'bout the mess. Just had my ranger orientation a few weeks ago, but my trainer's from Verdanturf, so he didn't really have much t'fill me in on here, yeah?"

“Ranger, huh?” Palpable relief plays across his face as Navy takes a seat. Beau strikes Navy as a ranger type, if only because he seems like a likable guy. Rangers are the region’s ambassadors, so it stands to reason a ranger would be gregarious.[break][break]
“Thank Arceus. I need all the help I can get.” His admission carries with it the candor of one man in the arena to another. Civilians demand a gentle touch and gentler words – a smile, a thumbs up, an everything will be okay. A fellow government official can see the mask slip.[break][break]
‘Well, sure you heard about the battle last year. Rocket won, but luckily for us there wasn’t too much damage. There’s a rift into another dimension in Granite Cave. It’s a bad one. The local wildlife’s pretty crazy, to say nothin’ of the ghosts that have been haunting us for a year now.” There’s a lot to unpack in what he said. Partway through, he realizes the absurdity of everything he has just said. To a normal person, he must sound absolutely insane, a rambling madman.[break][break]
“Been trying to get more people on at the ranger station here. Not really most people’s scene, you know? People your age tend to wanna go off to the city, live their best life.” Yet Beau is here, and for that the sheriff is grateful.[break][break]
“But it’s not just us.” And he already assumes it’s us. “There’s a few people who help around town. I’ll introduce ‘em to you when we’re done here.” A glance off to the side, in the direction of the kitchen.[break][break]
“What’s on the menu?”

"Yep," Beau nodded in response to the other man's Ranger inquiry. "Dewford's home, an' I wanted to make sure I came back ready to be useful, but it sounds like maybe more's going on since I left."

A statement that turned out to be prophetic as Navy unwound exactly what kind of roadblocks he'd been encountering. Beau could tell from the moment he'd laid eyes on the man that he had some level of exhaustion hanging around him, and had initially been ready to chalk that up to the demanding responsibilities of being a Gym Leader, but all of this?

He blinked slowly, digesting the multiple revelations that the sheriff dropped as easily as listing out the groceries he planned to get for the following week. "Yeah, no," he offers, shaking his head as though to clear it from the thoughts of a ghost sneaking its way out from under his bed in the middle of the night. "My buddy Jack helped me get going, but even he said it's slim pickings for rangers out here. Guess people don't wanna come out this far unless it's for sightseeing, but hey, I figure I'm worth two greenhorns at least," he grins.

He nods slowly at the brief mention of others. "For sure, I definitely have some catchin' up to do, and it sounds like I'd better get to it sooner rather than later if we've got ghosts and wormholes and Arceus knows what else. Definitely count me in - I took care of the place while I was here, I'm not gonna let it suffer worse if I can help. And I can," he adds.

A brief moment of silence, then he grins at the other man's question. "Chicken club and chips. Made extra if you're hungry, shouldn't be long."

“Oh Arceus yes.” A childhood of poverty and an adolescence of hard work taught him to never turn down free food. If Beau is offering, Navy will take him up on the offer. Even a middle school drop-out knows there’s no such thing as a free lunch.[break][break]
Besides, he won’t have much time between this house call and his afternoon dive into darkness. Just another day in the little town he loves so much. Horror on one side, death on the other, he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.[break][break]
“Jack? jack wainwright? Worked with a guy named that once. It was a whole thing, mirage island jam packed with dragon. He seemed like a good trainer. Stayed cool under pressure. Oughtta get him to come down here more. We’ll make a party out of cleaning the caves up.” The Garchomp he’d set to patrol the place could finally get some rest.[break][break]
“Sure you know about the battle here, then the battle north of here, the skirmish up north at the ancient tomb, too. Picked a good time to re-enter public service.” His grin turns macabre. “Can’t say I know much about you as a trainer. What’s your style, man? I’d peg you for a fighting or water trainer.” He says, as if he doesn’t know about the water park attached to the old gym.

"Say no more!" Beau heaves himself up from the chair with a grunt of effort, shooting the other man a thumbs-up. "Back in two shakes." He disappears into the kitchen, preceding an enormous clatter of dishes, pans, pots, what sounds like some kind of squeak toy, and the clinking of something into glasses. He returns shortly thereafter, a relatively respectable-looking sandwich and chips plated in each hand, and he sits one in front of his guest before resuming his seat.

Following him is the Snubbull from prior, a wooden tray clenched in his underbite, bearing two glasses of ice water. Beau takes one with a beaming smile, and the small dog wheezes around the table to sit impatiently before the sheriff with the other glass. "jack wainwright, that's him! We go way back, it was cool as all get out seeing him here. Complete surprise, but you won't find a more reliable dude, dude."

He sets into his sandwich with the gusto expected of a man his size, though he has the manners to swallow before he speaks again. "Yeah, brah, I'm not about to miss all the fun, not when it's close to home. 'Sides, sounds like you need your hands less full," he grins.

He finishes the sandwich in three or four bites, but curiously leaves the chips untouched. "On the money! My best brah Torben's a Pangoro, but I spent most of my time training Water-types," he explains. "Then at the gym, I decided I really wanted to be more about trainers learning about determination and stickin' to their guns, so I spread out a little bit. Basically if it hits hard, I got it," he winks.

He gives the man a break in the conversation to eat while he turns over the influx of information about the little island town he calls home over in his head. At length, he clears his throat. "So, where do I start? Sounds like there's some more people I oughtta meet, and ghosts and creepy wormholes don't wait for a convenient time, do they?"

“Thanks, little guy.” A smile punctuates the words as he takes his glass of water. Good, clean, Dewford water. It helps wash down the food. “That’s good.” He says, as if a homemade chicken club sandwich is some rare treat. A man fed on the League’s budget sometimes forgets the simple joys of life.[break][break]
“Well, first thing’s first, you got all your ranger orientation stuff done? Once that’s out of the way, I can show you the Ultra Deep Sea. That’s the scientific name for the place. I just call it Eternatus.” Maybe it isn’t wise to say the name. Giving something a name gives it identity, which in turn gives it power, but warriors have their damnable honor. His enemy deserves a name, if nothing else.[break][break]
“I’ll show you the spots ‘round town where the ghosts like to play and make some calls. You’ll wanna touch base with my successor, Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki. Name’s a mouthful, I know. After that…” A hint of weariness creeps into his words, “…it’s a lot of keeping the lights on. League doesn’t have the resources or need to mount some big expedition into Eternatus to wipe out the Nihilego. We do what we can, make sure nobody gets hurt.” A mirthless laugh.[break][break]
“Public service, huh?”

Beau nods, setting his plate to the side. "Yeah, I'm almost done with my Ranger orientating, so shouldn't be too bad before I can jump in and pull some weight around here for you." He tilts his head curiously, brow furrowed. "Eterna-whatnow?" This entire conversation consists of news to him, but he wonders how bad the situation must be, exactly, for Navy to speak like he has a vendetta against this portal specifically.

The sheriff then proceeds to rattle off a tongue-twister of a name that has Beau merely nodding his head eagerly in lieu of trying to repeat it, because even he has the self-awareness that he'll likely mangle the pronunciation without practicing it first. "Yeah, I'll give you my number - just give me a yell and I'll be there." Not that he's particularly looking forward to ghost-hunting; he did in fact scare easily, but he wasn't about to give Navy any reasons to be unsure of his usefulness in getting Dewford to something resembling normalcy.

A rueful grin tugs at his lips, his demeanor markedly more serious than the usual breezy attitude he conducts himself with. "Public service," he agrees. "It ain't easy, but somebody's gotta care enough to do it." He swirls the ice in his glass around absently, glancing toward the ceiling in idle thought. "I just hope it doesn't get worse before it gets better, but there's always something, feel me?"

“There is always something.” Navy agrees, wiping the remnants of the club sandwich out of his beard with a napkin. “But that’s why they have us, huh? The folk in this town don’t deserve none of this crap. It’s also why it’s important for us to enjoy every sandwich.” A musician said that once, in an interview he watched when he was much younger. It’s always stuck with him, now during wartime more than ever.[break][break]
“Enjoy your day. Lucky for us, there’s nothing going on yet.” Yet being the operative word in that sentence. Trouble would come later, and inevitably Navy would meet it. Lucky for him, he’d have a new friend helping out.[break][break]
Reaching into his pocket, he pulls out a notepad and pen. Scratching a few digits down, he slides it across to Beau. Old school, but it beats having to recite it out loud.[break][break]
“There’s my personal. The business card just has the sheriff’s office, and I’m out a lot of the time. Here’s hoping we do good work together. You ever wanna freshen up on your training, the Dewford gym’s always open.”
