once more, they find themselves back in the mechanical kingdom on their own, lacking the support of the likes of Melody Miro and noah faber that they were once accustomed to.[break][break]

matias prefers it this way.[break][break]

the ZYGARDE CELL leads them deeper into the castle, through hallways with various automatons that may or may not be alive.[break][break]

he ignores all of that as he rounds the corner with kyle lopez right behind him.[break][break]

"it's slipping under the door!"[break][break]

03 spot a zygarde cell that flees, leading your character into a sticky situation.[break][break]

33 enter the throne room of the castle, which will summon song-like alarm. waves and waves of mechanical volcanion/chesnaught will be sent to deal with you before the alarm stops. curiously, the resulting mechanical scraps will be pulled back by a magnetic force.[break][break]

34 in the castle, encounter several books of music. within the books, several songs can be learned: one that can repair machines, one that can cause rust, and another that can cause the automations of the world to pause briefly.[break][break]

"i got it!"

a wall nearby has a plate stripped off, revealing machinery underneath its interior. gears and screws litter on the floor nearby, which kyle immediately goes for.

"just go straight at it!"

he ignores the chase and splits off to fix the puzzle as they always had. one glance at the open mechanism tells him the missing piece was an obviously large gear on the ground.

it takes him a moment to slot a gear in for repair, immediately moving the rest of the clockwork back to motion.

with matias on the chase, he repairs the few needed crews and bolts needed to secure the gear. they don't want to have their way out shut close again after all.

with gears now secured in right places, they turn, moving in unison to achieve a common goal of lifting the heavy door to allow matias to slip in, hot on the ZYGARDE CELL'S tail.[break][break]

inside, he looks around, suddenly finding himself surrounded by MECHANICAL COPIES of kanto pokemon and one distinct POOCHYENA. alarms blare but they are soon silenced by EARTH SPIKES that tear them apart.[break][break]

a door deeper into the throne room opens, and from it marches a squad of MECHANICAL CHESNAUGHT, fat and burly and armed.[break][break]

he calls back to kyle lopez as he palms a pokeball.[break][break]

"we've got company!"[break][break]

he comes back from his repair to find matias against a group of mechanical pokemon. a battle is imminent, alongside a drawn out fight with armies of artificial life.

"alright."

he snaps his fingers as he runs to his retainer's side, creating ashes that swirl around an area between them and the opposing force. by the time he arrives, they have materialized into suicune and raikou.

the raikou's discharge surprisingly does little damage to what looked like robots, given that they're clockwork rather than electronic. instead, the suicune's blizzard is the one that slows down their movement better than the two attacks.

"that should stop them, right?"

kyle doesn't dismantle them and simply aimed to incapacitate, turning the unmoving machines into convenient roadblocks.

at the very least, the slowing of the mechanical guards allow them a moment to recuperate. his attention soon pulls to the VOLCANION in the end of the room, however, and it's one he recognizes from previous expeditions.[break][break]

"go talk to it for a bit. i gotta find an empty doll."[break][break]

without saying much else to kyle lopez, matias dips.

kyle is left by his knight. watching him disappear, the king then goes on to approach the kingdom's own remaining knight.

"we might again."

it would seem so.

"those things back there... what exactly are they?"

soul-hearts.

"and what are those?"

why do you even care, human?

"we're bringing you any of the dolls we find. think of it as compensation for help. no need to owe me something if there's an exchange."

...one of these carries the soul of the one i'm bound to protect. once i've repaired them, they would need a magearna to move, and only then will i know if they're the one.

"is that all we need to know? one of them lives at my home, and it would be nice to know anything that can affect their way of life."

if she breaks down again, i hope you're willing to spare some of your life for her.

not privy to kyle lopez's conversations with the kingdom's remaining knight, matias returns with an empty magearna in an arm, carrying it as one would a sack of potatoes yet somehow doing so with respect.[break][break]

"that took longer than expected."[break][break]

not sensing the vibe of the room, he approaches, kneeling before the knight before laying the magearna on the ground before them.[break][break]

"this good enough?"

the volcanion nods, and proceeds to repair the magearna.

kyle watches intently, and tries to understand the process. nothing special can be discerned with the naked eye, forcing him to rely on context clues to decipher what the volcanion had tried to hint to him.

slowly, it comes back to life. its lights blink, signifying a successful transfer of infinity energy.

the champion turns to volcanion, who begrudgingly looks away. he smiles, finding the action reminiscent of the various prideful, yet warm, names that he knows.

"we'll visit again next time, then," he tells the volcanion before stringing matias and his new pokemon away, leaving the last knight of the kingdom back to sulking on its lonesome.

matias doesn't understand the process either, his mind not knowledgeable enough to fully comprehend the science behind it. perhaps there no science at all. perhaps the spirit and soul channeled back into the magearna is nothing short of a miracle.[break][break]

the magearna finally hums, blinking at matias and kyle lopez. it is offered a pokeball; their pact sealed as it is captured.[break][break]

when kyle turns to leave, matias lingers for a moment. his head dips to show respect to the volcanion, recognizing it to be the last of its kind.[break][break]

the mechanical kingdom's last knight.

"you're oddly respectful this time," he teases as he notices matias' behavior.

the usual reaction of his companion during these kinds of situation would be indifference or false courtesy. instead, kyle doesn't feel a hint of insincerity with the action.

he smiles, shrugs, and leads the way out.

no other words were said on their way home, but kyle takes a note on how matias probably likes being in the service of a kingdom once again, make believe or not.
