"Smells like sand."

It was one part blunt honesty, another part a joke. Something did smell different compared to the desert they had in Hoenn, but it was subtle - and Hideo didn't want to sniff long enough to get sand up his nose.

Uxie mimicked CIAN MAHER 's motion, also pointing north. As if on cue, sand began to swirl in that direction. It wasn't a sandstorm - if anything, it'd appeared like a stream of sand, following the wind.

"...is Uxie right about there being a stream of sand ahead of us?"

Eva can’t help but giggle at Cian’s silly joke. She’s not sure what Ultra smells like or sand so she can’t agree with either of them, “Just smells hot to me,” she sighs, mentally preparing herself for another adventure through the arid terrain.

She follows them North, and eventually they run into their first strange encounter. Eva’s head tilts ever so slightly as she tries to make sense of it, “Yeah it looks kind like… a current? Like in that movie with the little Luvdisc and Feebas that go on an adventure to find the Feebas’s son and they ride the current with all the Tirtouga,” she looks between Cian and Hideo to gauge their reaction, “No? No one?”

Anyway, she rushes forward and dives right in, disappearing for a moment before surfacing and spitting sand out of her mouth as it whisks her way to their next destination.

he has the nerve to make that joke despite them being only a few years apart.[break][break]

before he can bring up all the reasons not to jump right into the sand, she goes and does it anyway, and he can do no more than put his hands on his waist and sigh.[break][break]

"she's kinda crazy, can't lie. but let's go, hideo! can't fall behind."[break][break]

sticking by Hideo Kino's side, cian makes sure they both jump into the stream as well before being carried away.]

Hideo shrugged. "Nah, don't get it either. I don't really watch that many movies."

Still, the analogy was easy enough to get - that it really was a current of sand flowing through the air. And he could feel Uxie physically pushing him to go ride it.

An urging that only got stronger when Eva Morales was the first one on it. "Alright, alright," Hideo said, CIAN MAHER 's urgings joining in Uxie's, "We'll take a ride. Just hope this ain't like actual swimming."

One jump in the swirling sand, and off they went, carried across the wind - like a Feebas and a Luvdisc looking for the Feebas's son. Hideo futilely tried to keep some semblance of balance, while Uxie clung to his sweater.

Eventually, the stream would weaken, and the group would descend onto what seemed like a random patch of sand - until they landed on something decidedly solid, like some kind of stone structure.

One that was completely invisible.

Though Hideo didn't know that.

"We just land on another tomb like before?" he asked, trying to shake loose sand out of every nook and cranny it found its way into on his body.

Eva seems quite comfortable lounging in the sand current as it carries them to parts unknown. She’s the first to arrive, finding sure footing on a seemingly invisible solid surface. She pounds her boots against the platform to ensure its stability and to knock off the excess sand from her laces. The sound echoed off something which she found odd because there was nothing. Cian and Hideo would find her dusting off the sand clinging to her top and scarf.

“That was kinda fun, huh?” she spat out some sand that clung to her lips, “Except for the sand part…” it got everywhere.

The professor looked around and began walking in no particular direction, “I don’t know, it doesn’t seem like a to-”

SMACK

“Ah!”

She runs right into . . . something. She blinks wildly, clearing her eyes of the budding tears of surprise. The stunned professor takes a wobbly step back. Her hands find her face and gently rub her tender nose before reaching out like she was in a dark room looking for a light switch, “Careful guys there’s, uh,” her hand finds the invisible wall and she smacks it a couple times to hear the echo resonate across the chamber, “You can’t see these walls.”

as the group find themselves interrupted by invisible walls and barriers, cian knocks into one, too, but his gaze travels down, caught by something in particular.[break][break]

"hey! i see something down below, i'll check it out real quick."[break][break]

without waiting for them, he descends, swimming in the air before finding ground. his feet sink into the sand as he runs his hands over stone, feeling familiar carvings before voicing the incantations.[break][break]

as it had done so previously, an INCARNATE FORME LANDORUS materializes, but cian is ready this time.[break][break]

"now, hopps!"[break][break]

the fire-type's FLAME CHARGE crashes into the spirit.[break][break]

"landorus! we're trying to help you! we'll bring your spirit back with us!"

Arceus, there was so much sand everywhere. As much as he enjoyed the free ride, he did not plan on riding one of those again.

"Wait, it's really invisible?" Hideo asked. "Well dang, guess that gives me the advantage." Which, granted, wasn't much; he was still just as unaware of this place's layout as everyone else.

But he was better at traversing unknown spaces, so points for him!

He reached out, looking for a wall to work off of. What his hand found was something oddly-shaped, oddly smooth - almost like it was some kind of chiseled foot…

"This some kind of stat-"

"IF YOU WISH TO PASS, ANSWER THIS RIDDLE, LITTLE ONE!"

Hideo jumped back from the voice suddenly booming above him. "Holy shit!" he shouted. The giant Shinx statue revealed itself, visible to all, its head staring straight at the boy.

"THAT IS NOT THE ANSWER, BUT I DID NOT ASK THE QUESTION YET. AND BECAUSE YOU ARE LITTLE, I WILL GIVE YOU A FREEBIE, BUT THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES SHOULD YOU ANSWER INCORRECTLY AGAIN. NOW, ANSWER THIS RIDDLE, LITTLE ONE!"

Hideo wanted to complain about it calling him "Little One", but he'd stay quiet for now.

"THE MORE THERE IS OF ME, THE LESS YOU SEE. WHAT AM I?"

"Darkness." Hideo didn't hesitate a second with his answer, speaking it the moment the statue was done.

"WOW YOU GOT THAT ONE FAST...I MEAN, YOU ARE CORRECT, LITTLE ONE. YOU AND YOUR LITTLER COMPANION ARE FREE TO PASS."

"Yeah, in a second. Gotta help my friend there deal with Landorus."
