Despite the veil of bandages around her arm, the roughness of bark against just her fingertips is comforting, evoking bits of nostalgia that hook a smile upon her lips. "As I grew up, she used to tell me that pecha wood was very, very special. That it carries the well wishes of those that planted it and in turn, protects them from evil spirits."[break][break]

A silent guardian that had watched over her as she grew. That she had spent many of her days playing and lazing under.[break][break]

"When Isaac finished building our home, I got him to help me plant a pecha tree in our backyard too. Was pretty fun! Haven't told him anything about what it means though."

“Huh.” Once upon a time, he didn’t go in for folklore. Before Slateport, anything in the distant past existed within that far-off realm. The bark of a pecha tree held about as much significance to that young pre-war man as the tax policies of old commissioners. In the here and now, this time of legends and never before seen Pokemon, he thinks it all fascinating – endlessly fascinating.[break][break]
“Never heard that one before. Don’t really know much about berries.” When they got to that part of science class, he tended to fall asleep. Really any science did it for him. That he can understand concepts like infinity energy or dyna energy at all is a miracle born of stellar improv skills.[break][break]
“Tell me all ‘bout it, Troublemaker. There anything else to Pecha tree folklore? We’ve got time. We’ll probably be here all night making sure some Drifloon don’t make off with Peters’s crops.” John Peters, you know, the farmer, asked them out here. More specifically, he asked Navy out here, and Navy isn’t in the business of turning down help.[break][break]
“Got you some Burger Kingler, too.” He sits down a big for her and starts devouring his sown burger alongside Shuwen.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]"It's a super old folklore she heard on one of her adventures." She hums, twisting to reach for her backpack and pulling out a notebook. The only time she looks up is when Navy moves with burger in hand for her, a brow raised even as she takes it.[break][break]

Did he not get a hyper bouncy Wooper toy? Though it is free food, she can't quite help the disappointment tapping in her head.[break][break]

"Long ago, before pecha wood was even considered special, there was a farmer. He was super passionate about his job, and loved growing all kinds of berries all year round to share with his own pokemon. He'd even go over to his neighbours' gardens if requested to help look after their berry trees.[break][break]

One day, a regular asked him for help with one particular sapling. It had started out growing fine, but one day started to wilt and wilt and wilt. No matter what they tried, this sapling just wouldn't get better or grow any bigger. So the farmer hopped right to it and got to work. But just like the regular said, no matter what he tried, it just wouldn't work.[break][break]

But he never gave up.[break][break]

'You have to get better, little one.' He would murmur as he pruned the wilted leaves and flowers, and fended wild pokemon away. 'You can grow big and strong so you can touch the highest sky and watch the world below.' And he tended to the soil, making a good environment for the sapling to grow.[break][break]

'I won't give up on you, so I hope you'll do your best too and get better soon.'[break][break]

One might call the farmer insane, talking to a mere sapling, toiling day after day on a seemingly hopeless case. But nature has eyes and ears, and sees and listens far more intently than one could ever imagine. One day, when the farmer arrived to tend to the young sapling again, he would see brand new leaves sprouting on the branches."[break][break]

The burger sits unwrapped on her lap, her fingers still tracing the words written within these pages.[break][break]

"As the years passed, the pecha tree would get bigger and bigger. And it would produce the biggest and sweetest pechas in all of the lands. People praised the farmer for all his hard work, saying that he truly had miracle hands. But whenever he heard them say that, he would pat the tree, laugh and simply reply.[break][break]

'The true miracle is this little one, not me.'"[break][break]

Fingers tracing another line down, she can feel a numbness prickling at the tips.[break][break]

"Momma doesn't really know when the legends started to change but at some point, people began to believe that the pecha tree would protect them from evil spirits. She told me once that it might have been because ghosts and those with evil in their hearts simply couldn't stand the positivity and love it glowed with, so they tended to stay as far away from it as possible."

Only the soft sound of Shuwen and Navy chewing breaks the silence of their apt attention. Both listen to the story wholeheartedly, at least until the food is consumed. Afterwards, the soft squeak of a toy interjects. Shuwen runs a wooper toy through his fingers, using it as a stand-in for a coin trick. Sometimes, it falls to the ground and bounces high enough for Shuwen to snatch it.[break][break]
“Crown.” Navy says sagely once the story concludes. “Crown, crown.” Shuwen snorts, only to be met by a serious look from his trainer. “That’s a good story, Eris.” Navy nods respectfully. “Real good. You should tell Calyrex that one sometime.” It would prove a pleasant distraction from his duties, Navy is sure.[break][break]
“The real miracle’s the little one, not me. Yeah…yeah. That makes sense.” His smile is sad, thinking back to the past. “Kids really are the real miracle. Know that’s not how the farmer meant it, but it’s hard not to think about it that way when you’ve been a parent.”

"Are they really?" It's weird to think about words in that way, especially when she cannot see the world from his perspective. "Kids get into trouble all the time." Case in point: Her and Hideo Kino. Though, Hideo is now to be given a pass of sorts given his position in the League.[break][break]

"Is Calyrex still at that big tree?" She closes her book, balancing it upon one knee as she finally starts peeling the burger wrapper. "I don't like it. How similar this all feels to the other tree in Sootopolis."

“Yeah,” his smile is one of unconditional warmth, “they do. That’s what kids are meant to do. You’re young, you get to raise some ruckus.” She’s good at that. It’s why he calls her troublemaker with such affection.[break][break]
“Calyrex is still by the tree, yeah. Imagine the one in Sootopolis is still there, too.” What comes next is a detective piecing together a mystery that hardly seems a mystery at all. “They got the one from the shield wolf. League’s Calyrex is the one from Zacian’s sword.” Quiet follows. This one is only broken by Shuwen offering the toy to Eris. He has little use for possessions.[break][break]
“Nobody can dynamax in Ever Grande while he’s there.” Navy reveals, although it is hardly a revelation. “Or so he says. Assume it’s the same in Sootopolis.” Just speaking the words brings him relief.

It was a beautiful sight. He finds it hard to believe that tree revived Necrozma. Yet he does believe her. She has never lied to him in matters of myth and legends.[break][break]

The toughest thing about this is trying to get him to understand her train of thoughts, to convey it in such a way that he doesn't dismiss her.[break][break]

Where did these dyna trees come from? Why now? Will they become catalysts for future catastrophes?"[break][break]

Worried. Of course she's worried. After the numerous, numerous disasters that have grown in this region, it has become instinct to question whether the appearance of something is a blessing or a sign of something far worse lurking on the horizon.[break][break]

"That day that pa's body- Necrozma absorbed the energy that the tree had, just like Mesprit warned. The darkest day is active. There are two. One will steal the foundation of life." And its greed knew no bounds, allowing it to steal much more in the process. "Back when it appeared, we were all fascinated by it. The fact it led to another world, gave us another Xerneas..."[break][break]

This one would gift them the presence of a once forgotten king.[break][break]

That would create yet another question of why. Why had Eternatus been present in Hoenn in the past? From the looks of things, it had most certainly failed to destroy the region then.[break][break]

"Will we really though?" What they have are fragments to a larger puzzle, that leave too big of gaps between. "Isn't the League busy worrying about Sootopolis?"[break][break]

There simply isn't enough time or resources to be spent on investigating things that don't seem to be problems yet.
