The two Pokémon put out quite the wake as the end of the straight stretch came, the two forced to either slow down or turn. Rather than say anything yet, Josh would silently observe to see how Knight handled turning Ulysses at speed. Riding fast in a straight line was not nearly as stressful on the body as making a turn while doing so. Staying upright while resisting the momentum shift was part of the challenge, and part of the fun. It would be like a turning roller coaster throwing its riders' bodies to one side.

When asked about any more advanced tricks riders could perform, the Gym Leader was about to say something when he saw the danger ahead. There was a nasty S-curve ahead of them; taken at speed, it would whip the riders' bodies in one direction, then the other. That assumed their timing was correct; with poor timing, smacking into the channel wall was a greater possibility.

"In a little bit, Knight! Might want to hit the brakes for this one!" Josh loosened his grip on Ripley's sides, the Barraskewda slowing down so that they could navigate the chicane together.

Knight had, for the most part, paid attention to the course they were following. Now, if he had been a bit distracted, watching the way Ulysses cut through the water and created small waves -- he could be forgiven for that? Right? [break][break]
So when Josh told him to hit the brakes, he really hit the brakes. He tugged on the reins, trying not to be too rough with the Dewgong, but it was still akin to an emergency stop. Water washed over the back of the 'mon and soaked Knight a little. He laughed it off and looked at the Gym Leader with a sheepish smile.[break][break]
"Sorry -- woah, hey, that looks..." The way the course snaked and bent in quick, sharp angles let Kay know he had been right to listen to Josh and stop. He pat Ulysses a few times, in apology, and then gently squeezed so they'd move at a relaxed pace this time. Knight couldn't help but admire how professional and experienced his mount was.[break][break]
Now that he had a taste for speed, Knight could appreciate that this meandering walking pace wasn't fast at all and he had been foolish for thinking so earlier. Hopefully the water would straighten out soon so they could go for one last burst of speed towards the end goal!

Josh, too, reined Ripley back for what would have been a whiplash-inducing turn at speed. At their reduced speed, it still felt like being rocked back and forth. Ulysses cooed at how well Knight handled the turn, getting back up to speed at his guest rider's command. "You really are a natural for this, aren't you?" Josh asked, his Barraskewda keeping pace.

After one last turn was a long straight stretch back to the finish line, this one over a small waterfall. They would need to make a jump, but coming up short was no big deal! They would still splash into the water below as long as their trajectory was straight. "If you're feeling brave, try having Ulysses use Aqua Jet!" Josh suggested, ready to have Ripley put on a similar burst of speed.

Kay blushed a little, "I'm just lucky I have such a great teacher and a brilliant Pokémon to help me learn the basics." He couldn't take credit for how well he was doing when most of it was because Ulysses was so awesome![break][break]

Aqua Jet...? Knight hesitated for only a second and then, politely, asked Ulysses to oblige, "Do you mind? I want to see you use Aqua Jet, please!" And the Dewgong didn't need to be asked twice, using the move to kick things up a notch.[break][break]

Knight let out a yelp of surprise at the sudden surge of speed that soon turned into a yell of excitement. So this was how fast Ulysses could go?! Incredible![break][break]

They zoomed over the 'finish line' and came to a gentle stop, which Knight appreciated. His head felt a little woozy after all that excitement and he needed a moment to recover.

Ripley also kicked on the afterburners, his propeller-tail sounding like a small engine mid-AQUA JET. "Wheeeeeee-haaaaaaaa!!" Josh whooped as both of them sailed over the edge, seemingly flying as the two swimmers arced downward. With a pair of great splashes, the duo landed in the water below, crossing where they started at great speeds. Despite water spraying in their faces from time to time, any headgear either of them wore would be almost bone dry from the wind.

Josh, too, needed a moment before he slipped off Ripley's back and climbed out of the water. He sat on the course's edge, almost like one would sit at the edge of a large, public swimming pool and watch the children at play. "It's fun going fast, isn't it?!" Josh exclaimed perhaps a little too loud. "Flying isn't too much different, except you have the third dimension to control, too. And if you can handle Ulysses, a land Pokémon's super easy."
