At some point, their desire for more information shifts. It is not that Fern doesn’t trust the heads of science within Rocket who are conducting research every day. They do not think themself inadequate during their trips to the rotten city perched in Ultra Space, either.[break][break]
They simply…think that they could find more to glean if they could pick through the league’s research as well. It’s just consolidation of many efforts from multiple sources![break][break]
And Fern is curious to see what they may have found. More and more these days, their curiosity is one that demands to be indulged.[break][break]
It is well into the night when they slink toward League Headquarters with this exact notion in mind.[break][break]
On the back of their dragapult, they slip through the gap created by the creature’s PHANTOM FORCE. It takes them from one side of the glass pane over to the other, nice and neat.[break][break]
(An act that Tapu Koko reluctantly partakes of as well, though it would much rather shatter the window altogether.)[break][break]
They slink through the halls, attempting to meander their way on quiet feet to the labs. Nary a soul in sight.

It’s not uncommon to find her wandering around her lab like a restless ghost. It’s her home, her safe space. Work is a distraction but also a lifeline. It keeps her sane and grounded. The restless mind of a scientist never sleeps. Even her dreams try to find the answers she seeks.

Tonight is no different. In the darkness of the hall outside the lab is a stark contrast to the fluorescent lights that gleam within it. Their glare paints an invisible curtain across the reflective surface. She’d never see them coming. She shouldn’t need to. This place is safe, the League Headquarters a fortress.

Eva busies herself at a station of meticulously aligned CURIOS extracted from the simulations she had fought through. A DYNAMAX BAND pulses with curious pink energy on a covered pedestal. Her conversation with Navy plays fervently through her mind, doubts about the Dynergy’s stability and safety harden the shadows on her face. She’s fixated on the data pad in her palm, eyes tracing the reading of energy dipping up and down on the graph. An Audino sleeps soundly in a corner not too far off. That seems to be the only pokemon present in this part of the lab.

They would assume the labs to be more scrutinized than it presently is. Or perhaps they are on camera and someone is missing their cue. But it hardly matters to Fern. They didn’t exactly think their harebrained scheme through. They are simply here on a whim, and that whim is to pilfer and rummage through whatever they can find, while they are able to get away with it.[break][break]
Anything of relevance. On Ultra Space. Lesser Megalopolis. Any Tapu sighting.[break][break]
In truth, they probably will not fully comprehend whatever they see or read. They are not science-minded, and should not have come unprepared. But Fern is cagey and restless. It does not sit well with them that they might be inadequate for this task in some way. They are prone more and more to acting on those sudden whims if the ideas provoked excitement. A thrill.[break][break]
Tapu Koko darts back to their side in the darkened hall, snagging Fern’s attention. Blue eyes look back at it curiously, and their patron points a pincer at thin light that spills out from a cracked doorway at the far end of the corridor. Bingo? Their grin splits wide–bright in the low light.[break][break]
They slink closer and peer around the frame to spy the sleeping audino. They do not wish to flag the attention of the scientist absorbed in her work, so they dart into the unlit lab directly across the hall. For now, they would sneak, and if the opportunity presented itself. Then they would investigate.[break][break]
Wandering among the tables of equipment, Fern peers at different technologies and test tubes of gathered materials. All of it is met with bland fascination. They read the labels, looking for any familiar words that will link back to the stretch of Ultra Space they continue to be drawn to. A sudden clatter startles them and they nearly jump from their skin. Whirling, they fix a glare on a conspicuous Tapu Koko who has knocked into a display model of some sort.[break][break]
So much for subtlety. Waving wildly, they press against the wall, behind the door and cross their fingers that the woman tucked in her lab is too focused to have noticed the disturbance. And if not? Well then, they are determined to have the jump on her.
