Naomi Sato

Since getting set up at the museum in Slateport, Yuina had certainly been delighted at the amount of friends and accquaintances that she saw more regularly. Whether it be they worked with the museum itself, or were part of the academic campus, it was nice to see them all more consistently.[break]
The last couple of days however, one particular colleague, she would even say friend, hadn't been around... Yuina was concerned, wondering where Naomi Sato was, until she saw the news that came around for the day from the HNN.[break][break]
Sat in her office, the paper strewn across her desk, Yuina looked at it, brows furrowed.[break][break]
Naomi Sato, Alias: The Visionary. Crimes include terrorism, treason, murder, and arson...[break][break]
Ever since her encounter with a one Cillian Quinn she had started to wonder... Who else around her that she would consider a friend stood on the other side of that arbitrary line...? But she wouldn't dare take the word of anyone other than Nomi herself... Nomi...[break][break]
"I know you're there, I know you watch," Yuina spoke aloud, to nothing at first, but she felt something there in the back of her mind, then the space around her shifted. Nigma, the unown emerged.[break][break]
"Take me to her, please," Yuina asked of the symbol, she could only imagine that just because the ? chose to come with her didn't mean that it wasn't still tied to Nomi in a way. The unown blinked, and where Yuina thought she may need to plead again, she felt the shift around her... And then she was no longer in her office in slateport.[break][break]
Instead, now, she stood on the sidewalk outside of a small townhome with Nigma lofting in the air beside her.

Yuina Higashi was an unexpected surprise, however. It was Nigma's doing, she realized - the Unown-? that had taken a liking to the Slateport University student during their expedition into Lesser Megalopolis, an event that now seemed like a century ago given all that had happened since.[break][break]
Nomi hesitated, weighing whether or not she ought to simply pretend she wasn't at home...but because she trusted the Unown, she eventually cracked open her front door. Familiar crimson eyes peered out at Yuina, a mix of curious and guarded.[break][break]
"Hello," she greeted warily, though a small smile touched her lips as she noticed Nigma floating dutifully beside the brown-haired young woman. "I suppose you have some questions for me, don't you."[break][break]
She waved for Yuina to enter the quaint Sootopolis townhome, perhaps an unexpectedly domestic venue to be meeting with a known criminal.[break][break]
"Come in."

Taking a moment to understand that she had teleported and was certainly not even in the same city as she had been before, Yuina felt Nigma shift again towards one particular home. And true to form, the symbol did what she asked as Yuina carefully approached the door. Nomi was on the other side.[break]
Yuina was quiet at first, she didn't want to impose, or make things more difficult than she was sure they already were... But as Nomi opened the door, allowing her and Nigma inside, she couldn't help but gingerly reach out to give Nomi a hug if she allowed, wrapping her arms around her shoulders.[break][break]
She did have questions, but there was only one that truly mattered in the beginning.[break]
"Are you okay?"

As Yuina's arms wrapped around her without warning, pulling her into a warm embrace, Nomi stiffened in shock. She was the Visionary, seer and prophet, and yet, the very first question asked of her was an entirely unforeseen inquiry: one she never could have predicted.[break][break]
Are you okay?[break][break]
Nomi crumbled, returning the hug with a burst of enthusiasm, tears welling in her eyes as she held Yuina so tightly it was as if she was worried the other woman might suddenly disappear. She sniffed, a lump forming in the back of her throat.[break][break]
"No," she admitted softly. It was the first time she'd accepted it; the first time she'd ever truly acknowledged how shaken she was by PENELOPE LIVY's accusations. By her hateful revenge.[break][break]
"I'm not okay. But I will be okay. Eventually."[break][break]
An awkward silence fell, but Nomi didn't shy away from it. She simply allowed herself to take comfort in Yuina's compassion.[break][break]
She did, eventually, break from the hug, eyes puffy and cheeks slightly reddened with mild embarrassment. She coughed, then waved for Yuina to follow her inside.[break][break]
"Follow me to the kitchen. We can talk there, and I'll make tea, if you'd like."

Standing there in her doorway, Yuina embraced Nomi when it was reciprocated, feeling her fall apart at her question. In that very moment, Yuina's mind was made up, it didn't matter what the papers said or what anyone else said. Her care was real, Nomi was real, and that disippated the last remnants of that arbitrary line. It didn't matter, not when this person she considered a friend, a person that she knew outside of whatever had happened, was hurting and possibly in danger. Dividing lines be damned.[break][break]
Yuina stayed there for however long Nomi needed, it was clear in her body the tension and weight that she was holding, and when the hug broke, Yuina took a step back with Nigma as they were allowed fully inside and the door closed behind them.[break]
"Tea sounds great, thank you," Yuina returned softly, following Nomi through her quaint domain.[break][break]
"I did see the paper... That's why we came to find you," she breached the topic first, but still there was no accusation, no bitterness or scorn to her words. Still, only concern, worry...[break]
"But I wanted to hear what happened from you... Or not, I don't expect you to tell me everything, or anything... I guess I just wanted to know that you were okay, and let you know that you still have a friend..."

There was an immediate sense of deja-vu as Yuina took a seat at the kitchen table. Mere days ago, Nomi had served tea to howard slayte as they'd discussed the very same topic she was about to address with Yuina, though Nomi suspected this conversation would have a slightly different flavor. In the spirit of that observation, she selected a tea unlike the one she had served Howard: for him, she had made traditional Johtonian Sencha, but for Yuina, an Alolan tropical blend felt more appropriate.[break][break]
"I appreciate your concern," Nomi replied gently over the tick tick tick of the stove igniting. "And your loyalty."[break][break]
Which, of course, meant that Yuina deserved the truth.[break][break]
Turning away from the kettle to face her visitor, Nomi watched Kallistatus and Nigma drifty idly over to the kitchen window. Sunlight streamed in, washing over the herbs planted in the windowsill.[break][break]
"Before I tell you everything, Yuina, I need you to understand something." There was a weight to her words now, as if they were being held together with the threads of fate. "What's been written about me in the HNN article, it's all lies. Except for one thing: I am indeed associated with Team Rocket, and have been for many years."[break][break]

Sitting at the table within the humble kitchen, the quiet washed over her as Yuina listened to Nomi's first few words. Her concern, her loyalty... Loyalty seemed a strange position to point out... But Yuina didn't question it. She was trusting of Nomi.[break]
She listened to the stovetop begin to burn its flame, a pot of tea setting to brew before Nomi too came towards the table where she sat. And she began, stating what Yuina could have fathomed and now knew to be true. She was a part of team rocket, but so was Temp, and so were probably many others at this point that she would still consider a friend otherwise...[break][break]
"And I'm a league ranger, but that hasn't seemed important in anything we've done together...," Yuina returned, her own statement carried less weight of course, and may not be a surprise to Nomi, but was there ever a 'dividing line' to begin with?[break][break]
"It still doesn't seem very important now either... It would be silly to assume that no one else I know is affiliated with rocket. And it would be even moreso to let that change my opinion of them all of a sudden," she offered, eyes cast down, thoughtful for a moment.[break]
"I couldn't imagine being so narrow minded, I'd probably lose some good friends."

It was the sort of thing Isaac Merlo might say, in defiance of the pointless rivalries, personal vendettas, and faction enmities that served Hoenn little good, in the grand scheme of things. It was also a hopelessly naive idealism, the sort of thing that would get a woman like Yuina killed if she wasn't careful. After all, Nomi had blindly trusted in the power of open-mindedness only to watch the love of her life nearly burn to a crisp for it.[break][break]
Never again would she make that same mistake.[break][break]
"You are a good person, Yuina," Nomi gently emphasized. A low whistle indicated the water was beginning to boil. "Not everyone is willing to set aside biases against larger organizations in order to better understand the individuals within them."[break][break]
A bitterness crept into her voice, then. She turned to briefly remove the kettle from the stove.[break][break]
"Another thing you should know about me, is that I am an Avatar." She smiled a little, nodding her head at Nigma. "Which you may have gathered, considering the HNN article refers to me as The Visionary." She prepared two mugs of steaming tea, then took a seat across from Yuina, sliding one mug across the table to the other woman. "But you're clever - I bet you noticed things about me that seemed strange, yes? The special sort of relationship I have with the Unown, for example."[break][break]
They'd spent a significant amount of time together in Lesser Megalopolis; Nomi had been forced to use her powers more than once, as subtly as she could manage.[break][break]
"My ascension to Avatarship helped me understand my true purpose, Yuina," she murmured softly. "The faction conflict is a distraction, one the DRK Triad is keen on perpetuating. It keeps us all occupied while they further their own agenda. I've been...trying to put a temporary halt to it, in favor of a unified front against our common enemy."

The kettle on the stovetop began to bubble and boil as they remained in the kitchen, and Yuina could only listen as Nomi explained a bit more about who she was, what she was involved in, and Yuina nearly paled at the mention of the Drk Triad again. At this point, she knew enough... They had found her and Doug in the chasms below the icelands...[break][break]
"Well... it sounds like I've been right all along then," Yuina returned after a moment.[break]
"Everything about this war has felt so artificial and arbitrary, and maybe that's my detriment, being an outsider looking in on years of history that I have no recourse for," she thought, it wasn't as if she had any influence, any pull whatsoever to voice such an idea. She was nobody, as far as most of the greater league organization was concerned.[break][break]
"I encountered a sect of the Drk Triad in the chasms below the icelands... They were there, attacking bases on both 'sides', but no one seems to be the least bit concerned. Did rocket make advances on any of their forces? Or were they only concerned about what resources the league was garnering, just like the league only cared about what kind of perimeters rocket was keeping?"

You baited them, she reminded herself, with a pang of guilt. Or rather, once Kallistatus had sensed them coming, she had used it to her advantage. She'd needed to prove a point, and it had worked. Or so she hoped: perhaps by now, PENELOPE LIVY had undone whatever semblance of faith freya morningstar had reluctantly chosen to have in Nomi.[break][break]
"The DRK Triad have been after me for some time. Nisa Holo, in particular, despises me." Nomi glanced at Kallistatus. "She attempted to kill me inside of the RKS Machine. Kallistatus betrayed her for me, which enraged her. She wanted to prevent me from becoming an Avatar...and failed."[break][break]
Had it almost been a year since that fateful encounter? Since her ascension?[break][break]
"But to answer your question - no. Rocket, League, neither seem to care about our collective survival over their own personal vendettas." She sighed, blowing on her steaming tea. "I have tried warning people on both sides, but thus far, it doesn't seem to be making much of a difference."[break][break]

She had since stopped drinking the tea that sat in front of her, though her hands still clasped the small mug that she held. Yuina listened, she could imagine that Nomi in particular was on their radar, and like others who too had become avatars since it seemed that the organization had a particular propensity towards the overarching group.[break][break]
"Well if no one listens to you, an avatar, then I certainly don't have any stock in being able to change someone's mind...," Yuina muttered, she had already seen how stubborn and set in their ways the highest of the league could be, she hardly had any pull for anything.[break]
"Everyone cares about Hoenn, and can fight against threats like Kyurem. But it doesn't matter until it happens, and then its too late," and Yuina wondered if that would be the case if the triad descended upon Hoenn. Would it be too late for either side to care then, when they were being attacked by forces beyond league and rocket?[break][break]
Yuina was quiet for a moment, eyes cast down into the still liquid of the tea in her glass, contemplative... Afraid... she had been afraid of Nomi's answer, that no one cares, that the threat of the drk triad would continue, and she herself would be powerless to help herself...[break][break]
"They're after me too... the woman in the black hat is looking for me... And I don't know why."

Nomi could feel Yuina's trepidation through the wavering in her voice. She wanted to reach for her, try and comfort her in some way...the fear was evident as the woman stared down into her tea mug, quiet and contemplative, expression distant in an attempt to rally some semblance of hope. Nomi wished she could give her that hope, she really did.[break][break]
But then Yuina said something that shocked Nomi, her eyes widening as she processed the new information.[break][break]
"They're after you?" She repeated, bemused. "But you're - " Just a normal girl, she almost said, but stopped herself. She'd been a "just a normal girl" before the Unown had bonded with her.[break][break]

"But it wasn't until I had...garnered the favor of the Unown, that Holo tried to kill me. She wanted to stop me from becoming an Avatar."[break][break]
Did they want to prevent the same for Yuina?[break][break]
Something occurred to Nomi then, a detail she had glossed over at first.[break][break]
"Wait...black hat?" That sounded vaguely familiar. "Which member of the Triad is that?"

Saying it outloud, putting it out in the universe always made it both easier to handle and heavier to carry... Every utterance made it more real, something that she couldn't ignore and something that loomed behind her every passing moment.[break]
Yuina clutched the tea cup in front of her ever tighter, the trepidation palpable at stating it, making it true...[break][break]
"What? No, I mean, at least... I don't think so," Yuina remarked first, how was she supposed to know? For all she knew Daikenki could be a legendary Pokemon and she just would have never known it.[break]
"The only ones I've ever seen have tried to kill me, anything else... I don't know what 'legendary' Pokemon are out there," she returned, Nomi might have recalled Yuina being unceremoniously tossed through Hoopa's portal in the icelands, a truly remarkable encounter with a legendary Pokemon.[break][break]
By all accounts, it was inconceivable that the triad should be after her, someone as... ill advised as Yuina, with little standing on what could even be categorized as a legendary Pokemon. And as she tried to think on that a bit more, she listened to Nomi recall a Nisa Holo... Well surely if Nomi knew one of them by name, that she would know which one Yuina was talking about if they were the same person?[break][break]
"I don't know her name... I've only seen her once... An older woman, in a black dress, with white hair and a fancy black hat..."

Nomi bit her lip, troubled. Yuina was a smart young woman; unfamiliarity with specific legendary Pokemon aside, she would know if a divine being was trying to get her attention. Wouldn't she?[break][break]
All the same, Nomi quietly sent a message to the Unown: watch over her. See what she cannot see.[break][break]
Yuina's description of the mysterious new member of the DRK Triad stirred Nomi's memory, all of a sudden.[break][break]
"Hold on," she realized, voice growing excited. "I think I have seen that woman before, in the RKS Machine."[break][break]
Holo had infiltrated the simulated universe, as well. Nomi was fairly certain this woman's...scenario, the one she had encountered, wasn't the real her. But all the same, it provided critical information. She needed to get back in there and find her again, and record every tiny detail - ideally, as soon as possible.[break][break]
"Do you have access to the League's version of the RKS Machine?"[break][break]
She did not elaborate on how she knew of its existence. For now, Navy's willingness to ally with her cause would remain a secret - even from someone as understanding as Yuina. She simply could not put another person at risk.[break][break]
"If not...this may be tricky. I wish I could take you inside of ours. That way, maybe both of us can draw out this woman who's been hunting you."
