04 encounter baby celesteela in the ground as obstacles. if they are touched, they will summon kartana to attack you.

11 discover at least one special crater out of five. each crater has an inscribed message written in bamboo stalks, asking for a separate gift to be brought at a later date: a stone bowl, a jeweled branch, a robe of fire rats, a dragon's jewel, and a seaborne shell.

for once, matias comes prepared with a map of ultra crater, its details based on findings reported from various parties, and for that reason, the map remains incomplete, bare, but enough.

"guess we'll have to come back with a gift."

for their special crater, they picked A ROBE OF FIRE RATS. seemed fitting for them.

"want to camp out for a bit or head back now?"

that's what he knows about himself at keast.

a part of him second guesses himself, as if there's something nostalgic about heading out to the wilds and sleeping under the constellations that tell a story of the past. something tells him matias was the same.

"but i guess we can take a-"

just as he was planning to check their supplies, he realizes that it was lighter.

kyle puts the backpack in front of him and opens its contents, showing it to matias. his mouth is agape, unable to explain the missing contents of the bag.

"you're missing out."

they are on opposing ends this time as matias has spent the majority of his life outdoors, both for hobby and duty, so the idea of attempting to spend the night here in ultra crater sounded tempting.

but as he always does with kyle, he relents, turning to prepare to leave before being interrupted.

"hm?"

peering into the bag, his eyes widen, and he sighs.

"we did so much work harvesting the soil…"

"no, not the soil."

with their work done, kyle defaults to his original priorities, which was self-indulgence. they already did the work needed so anything needed from them has been forgotten.

his main worry shows with the rest of their supplies.

"rations! we lost all our rations so we can't even even take our time going back to the actual entry point."

they can always get back with his solgaleo, but going back this early meant being given another assignment so quick due to toxic work culture that awards efficient employees with more work.

ah, yes, their rations. matias had grown so used to always having them to begin with that the thought never occurred to him. but as a war veteran who spent the majority of his life traversing the wild, he's accustomed to the feeling of hunger.

"i'm sure we'll be fine. we didn't have that many to begin with."

he tries to reassure his friend.

"a little hunger only means our next meal will be extra tasty."

"ugh, i'm not like you. i'm just a city boy working as a police officer, not a battle-hardened veteran who fought in the frontlines."

as usual, kyle downplays his involvement. the only difference is that matias' experience on kanto greatly supersedes his own indifference during the start of the rocket invasion.

as he makes a reference to kanto's war-torn history, a similar scene plays out in front of them. instead of a minefield, ultra beasts lie on the ground as traps before them.

"oh yeah, were landmines part of your expertise too?" he asks, half joking. "what do we do now?"

this route was the quickest way back, and going around it takes a longer amount of time. the solgaleo option becomes more appetizing no matter how the consequence of doing it was.

but that's only because kyle's involvement has been far more than that, even exceeding a battle-hardened veteran at times. he isn't going to gush about it, however, because he knows kyle knows as much.

met with a minefield of ultra beasts, matias lowers to a squat, thinking.

"no, that wasn't my department."

curiously, he flicks his wrist, sending a bit of earth into one of them. as soon as contact is made, the BABY CELESTEELA let out a sharp screech. what follows is the buzzing of KARTANA.

he rises back up, then looks over at kyle.

"solgaleo time? or can i have five minutes?"

brows furrow as they are met with a swarm of ultra beasts.

"five minutes," he confirms.

he squats down, resting his legs from their trek, as he waits for the inevitable to happen.

this was self-defense, so they're allowed to do it. they may be able to avoid confrontation through a wormhole made by solgaleo, but he knows kartana are fast enough to interrupt the process.

"i'll have solgaleo prepare our exit afterwards." he pauses before he lets out a loud whine. "ugh! i can't wait until we get back and we're asked to return here for another trip!"

they were efficient. efficient workers are rewarded with more work.

with only five minutes to spare, matias wastes no time with engaging the swarm of ULTRA BEASTS that flock their way. pokeballs burst open, acting as their wall of defense while also paving the way for offense in the form of matias and his charizard.

"five minutes!"

he calls out as he leaps ahead, mounting the fire-type before charging straight at the KARTANA while solgaleo prepares their exit.

flames were easy to work with, especially ones strong enough to turn burnt objects into ashes.

the solgaleo pops out of its ball as it prepares to do its thing. with matias acting as their shield against any deterrent, the solgaleo is allowed to prepare their exit without much interruption.

"don't get too excited, alright!" he calls right after.

like flint and steel, kyle strikes his fingers together, ready to conjure his own flames with a simple snap. he aims to reclaim cinders from the battle for his own, bringing back life that never needed to expire due to their trespassing.

they already had too much target on their heads as avatars. maybe they'll be pardoned for vandalism of life inside ultra crater if he goes and undoes it.
