When you start a business in the afterlife, you learn to expect the unexpected. Dustin the Dusclops idly wipes down a glass, the motion mere repetition to pass the time. Time, as a certain song goes, is on his side. It’s on everyone’s side here. After the hourglass runs out, time in all its true infinity becomes your best friend.[break][break]
He’s seen an uptick in foot traffic during a measurement of time humans would call the past year. Some business in the world of the living has gotten the humans in a frenzy. It’s left the death god quite angry, which is a nice windfall for Dustin. He gets more business, the god of the dead gets to feel content with himself.[break][break]
Dustin considers himself a barman as much as he is an innkeeper. He’s made a career off of reading the spirits of the departed. Some stay for a short kip, then it’s on to whatever comes next. Dustin’s a coward. He doesn’t care to find out what comes next. Hearing about other people’s lives carries too much of a voyeuristic thrill. The only souls he truly does not care for are the souls of troublemakers.[break][break]
Today is his unlucky day. There’s not just one unlucky soul, but two in his little roadside inn.[break][break]
Gabriel Navidson, who gave Dustin the name he wears, has been here before. Dustin can’t get a read on why the kid can’t move on. Like Dustin, he watches other people. Where Dustin’s poison is the dead, Gabe’s is the living. A distinctly out of place departed soul has drawn him here like a moth to a flame. Gabe will not be the last.[break][break]
“Aren’t you supposed to be immortal?” He asks kyle lopez, oblivious to the second meaning of the words. Gabriel looks good for a dead boy. Death has frozen him in place. He’ll forever be seventeen, forever a boy on his grand Pokemon journey.[break][break]
His face will forever bear the grisly reminder of what brought him to this realm.[break][break]

unlike gabe's older brother, kyle looks more like a brother to gabe because he doesn't look like his parent. navy does look like he's around twenty years older than him due to a trip to a distortion, as well as other factors like stress and other substances (guess).

he makes himself comfortable on his seat and orders himself a drink. while he can't say he likes alcohol, nothing was stopping him from immersing himself.

"i got myself killed on purpose," he finally answers. "if ho-oh tells you that it's possible, you would want to try it too, right?"

kyle didn't actually want to try it, but the hypothetical often tends to differ from reality.

Dustin the Dusclops falls back into the routine of being a barman when his newest guest orders a drink. What sort of host would he be if he let the man’s throat go parched? There’s only so much harm to be done, what with him being dead, but a host must needs serve his role.[break][break]
It leaves young Gabriel alone to ponder the question. A few years in the afterlife changes your perspective, but he tugs at old folders to remember his survival instincts.[break][break]
“You can live with one lung or kidney. I don’t think I’d wanna find out what that’s like.”[break][break]
An elegantly dressed barmaid floats up to them, serving their drinks on an old tin tray. Gabe smiles up at him. Olivier, his old Gardevoir, joined him in death some months ago.[break][break]
“But I guess it’d be like being dead. It’s not so bad, once you get used to it.”

kyle so easily waves off the issue like it wasn't important. apathy comes with its advantages, and his nonchalant approach on things pushes him to move forward without the burden of worry.

thanking the server that delivers him his drink, he turns back to gabe.

"do you think i should go back?" he asks. "i want a personal answer, not the kind of response you give to look righteous in front of your crush."

he always urged him to be carefree despite his good nature. the boy was the epitome of a wannabe hero that it makes kyle sick, but he's grown on him, like every other shithead in his life.

kyle props his head up against the surface of the table as he stares into gabe's eyes, forcing him to awkwardness until he gives an answer he'll be satisfied with.

“Uh, uh, uh…” Gabe’s cheeks flush. Dustin and Olivier both stifle laughter. He’s taken on heavy burdens, here in the borderlands. He makes it his mission to cheat the reaper, to help lost souls along with what Pokemon remain to him.[break][break]
Even still, he blushes and preens under Kyle’s assertive stare.[break][break]
“Yeah! Of course I’d- I mean. Maybe. I mean-” A sigh escapes him. Gabe stops being Gabe the protagonist, someone blessed by gods in other worlds, and simply acts like Gabe the teenager.[break][break]
“I’m tired. Sometimes, I just wanna sleep, but I’m worried. Like…if I don’t stay here, I’ll miss some big curtain call, you know? Like when the hero comes back and saves the day.” Beneath the broken side of his face is a black bag, a mirror of his brother’s in the land of the living.[break][break]
“That’s…how it always goes in the games, right?”

he flicks gabe's forehead.

"you're saying you don't like moving forward in case you find better loot?"

he smirks.

"you greedy boy."

he drinks the mead they serve, finding the taste different from when he visited the place when he was still living. kyle takes a moment to focus on his drink, smacking his lips before running his tongue through it to take in the taste better.

it wasn't the best, but it was much better than the one he had from the establishment before.

"alright, i've decided. if that's the way you're going to indulge yourself during your stay here, then i'm going to do the same."

it doesn't surprise kyle that gabe hasn't moved on, and it wouldn't surprise him if it takes him much longer to actually consider it. the boy has a lot of values that kyle doesn't have, tenacity included.

"i'll go wait with you," he tells him. "i'm not even sure how i can actually come back anyways."

He’s overheard the boy talk enough about his actual brother, forced to play both father and mother. They’re not afforded the intimate bond of mischief and derision that these two have.[break][break]
“L-Look! Moving on now would be like, like…dying before your favorite TV show’s finished! Even if the show goes downhill, you gotta keep with it! You, uh, you can look, sometimes, at what’s happening on the other side, if you know where to look. Not always, but…” They’re back to secret sharing. Dustin returns to polishing glass.[break][break]
“Since we’re just waiting, then, you’ve got time to tell me some stuff. What the heck happened at that big battle? The ones with the two dog Pokemon? Navy got all weird after you guys woke up.”

"i never really remembered most of it," he confesses. "but there are times where i felt closer to people when i shouldn't have, like grade school classmate who you never heard off until you get into high school."

people have called him names. guildmaster. a noble. king. partner. brother.

none of them had any reason to exist, but kyle believes them to be genuine nonetheless.

"people always believed it was scientifically just an illusion or a dream-- something imaginary-- and many people considered the relationships formed there like online friends you spent most of your free time with."

if he had a pokeball, he'd be playing with it.

"i've been trying to downplay it by withholding proof since it might cause problems, but everything did happen. navy has just been struggling to accept that we couldn't bring everything over to our side and it's easier to give him an out in case he needs to cope, even if it's not something he openly wouldn't take."

his family and his life that he made there, most notably his children.
