What truly was this place? Had her mind constructed this dreamscape out of a desperate need to escape her harsh reality? No, that did not sound right. Andrea wanted to be back in Hoenn, not Ultra Megalopolis. This had to be someone else’s dream she was invading.

On the window of some daycare facility, she saw her friends floating inside large test tubes: Hydreigon, Tyrantrum, Gouging Fire, Roaring Moon, Slither Wing. Yet, however hard she looked, she could not find her Salamence.

“Chomper, Regina! Can you hear me?!” The young PokéManiac shouted, slamming her fist against the glass. “Enteisaurus, Savage, Mothman! I’ll get you outta there, I promise!”

Despite her efforts, the glass did not crack. Despite her cries, her Pokémon did not wake up; they remained asleep, as if in permanent stasis. She may, however, have attracted the attention of a fellow dummy who happened to share this lucid dream with her.

The lack of masks made identification easier. The Rocket admin did not know her, per se, but he might have heard passing mentions from common acquaintances such as Josh Devlin, or even recognized her loud voice as the tax evader that had casually name-dropped an underboss upon first waking up in the penitentiary of prisms.

If Andrea had been out hunting bears on Route 119 during the Murder Roulette Incident (2023), everyone's suffering could've ended early and they could've gone home. All it would've taken was one word to the bear, and the whole Bloodmoon Beast misunderstanding could've been easily cleared up.

Alas, she hadn't. Instead, Howard had gotten beaten up by blue people, bears, and Toxic Chains.

Hell, he didn't even have the bear anymore. Doug's smashing lived in his head, replaying over and over again like a cursed video. The Gigaton Ball shattered into pieces, and the sickening sound of flesh rang in his ears.

"Doug..." Howard's eye wandered the city of lights. They were too blinding. This whole city was far too blinding. "Doug...?"

People had begun to find their Pokémon within the city, suspended in glass structures full of fluid. No matter where Howard looked, he couldn't find Regice, Shirley, or Doug anywhere. It was as if they were avoiding him. Hiding from him. Mocking him.

His eye found Andrea. He shuffled over, content to find somebody in this prison of lights.

"They can't hear you. I've tried." He was surprised at how hoarse his voice was in comparison to hers. Andrea sounded like she could keep screaming for another six hours. If Howard raised his voice, it was likely that he'd break into tears. "These are all yours?"

The hoarseness of the voice combined with the fact that the person before her still wore a mask made identification difficult. Had his voice not been drained of its 'color', she might have been able to recognize him as the owner of that weird-looking ball--the man who had all but groveled at the enemy's feet in an attempt to spare the life of his bear.

Alas, even in the dream world they were total strangers. Even so, the design of his mask provided a useful clue. "You're in Dummy Ward too, aren't you?" The draconic cosplayer deduced, before turning her attention back to the Pokémon suspended in tubes. "Yeah, these are mine... If only I could break them out, I'd make that monkey pay for what it did!" She slammed an angry fist against the unbreakable glass.

It was then that she realized this shared dreamscape allowed her to converse with other inmates, even ones she had never met before. The plotting potential was insane. Plotting their escape, that is. "We need a plan. If our friends are in this dream, that must mean they're still alive in the real world. If we can find them, then we can fight back. But how do we find them?"

He visibly cringed from behind the mask. The idea of being imprisoned in a ward labeled with the term 'Dummy' was almost too much to bear. It was the final nail in the proverbial coffin; a final mockery that insisted on crushing the prisoners into the dirt with its heel and grinding them into dust.

"Yeah. I'm one of the monkey's many misfortunes." Alliteration. Yippee. At least Andrea still had hope. She'd be a good candidate for fighting back against their oppressors. Howard couldn't fight, but perhaps this woman could. "Make it pay."

It wouldn't be him. There was no world in which Howard could administer justice, because only the strong had that right. It was an unspoken law that dictated who had the capacity to change the world. Only those who dared to go out and reach for that right were the ones who deserved to have it.

Howard would not reach. Therefore, he didn't deserve to change it.

"By exploring and hoping. Eventually, you'll reach the other side." He chewed on the inside of his lip as he gave Andrea a look. "You think our Pokémon are still alive?"

He did not dare hope.

Explore and hope. That advice was as generic as they come, but there didn’t seem to be anything else they could do. Their hellish prison was filled with secret rooms. The only way to find what they were looking for was to search every last one of them.

The dragon-costumed girl darted her head at the mystery man’s next question. “O-of course I think they’re alive! I refuse to believe anything else!” Was her hasty retort. “Even Meatloaf… I know I saw his Pokéball get smashed, but my gut tells me he might’ve survived, somehow. It wouldn’t be the first time he came back from the dead…”

One could say that Andrea had the exact opposite problem from the jaded archeologist: She had entirely too much hope.

"Pokémon come back from the dead?" The masked man's voice had an ember of hope. It was a dream of a dream, hardly tangible, but if Doug could come back, maybe it was worth it. "I thought that was a myth."

The Border was very real, and its capacity for revival was infamous. There was a rumor that kyle lopez could bring dead things back to life, but Howard had never seen it done. The deceased champion had made sure to not use that trick on camera, if it was a trick he had at all.

Yet it was a trick that Howard wished was real more than ever. Why had Doug died? Howard had done his job. He had worked hard. What was the point of crushing Doug into smithereens?

Why? Why? Why?

He put a hand on the container holding Andrea's Hydreigon and her menagerie of dragons. Where were his Pokémon? They were nowhere to be found. After a moment, he gave Andrea a look.

"How?" He rasped, voice choked. "How're you so hopeful? We're in prison. We're treated like shit. How're you still going?"

There was a pedantic argument to be made that a bunch of Ghost-type Pokémon had technically come back from the dead, but Andrea wasn't exactly in the right headspace to have a nerdoff. Besides, Meatloaf's case had been an entirely different kind of miracle--a tale of frost and thaw.

"I have to." Answered Andrea, both on why she hoped and why she kept going. "I have a son back home that needs me. His name is Jalapeño. He's a Fuecoco." She stated very matter-of-factly, joining the masked man in staring wistfully at the test tubes. "For his sake, I have to survive this. No matter how much they hurt me, it's nothing compared to the pain of never seeing him again..."

Her expression hardened; it became resolute, a spark of WILLPOWER flashing for but a second in her amethyst eyes.

"They'll mess up at some point, that'll be our chance to escape. They think they've taken everything from us, but they underestimate our fighting spirit. They underestimate our TOUKON!"

Toukon. Willpower. The need to move forward. The will to do what needed to be done. The drive to push against any opposition to reach for the future.

"Huh." Howard frowned as he looked back at the woman next to him. She had a purpose. Andrea had a reason to keep going. A reason to live. A reason to love. A reason to keep fighting. Even if that reason was for a Fuecoco named Jalapeño of all things. "Your son?"

Howard was so confused by Andrea's claim that he temporarily forgot to be depressed. Even Doug was forgotten amidst this new revelation.

"So does that mean..." He gestured vaguely at Andrea's contained Pokémon, attempting to process this new information about the genealogical struggles of humans and Pokémon sharing a family tree. "Does that mean the Hydreigon is your brother?"

Deja vu.

The eccentric girl nodded at the last question. “I’ve had Chomper ever since he was a Deino and I was a little girl. We slept in the same room and ate off the same table. I’m an only child, but I’ve always thought of him as a brother.”

Her gaze hardened anew. “This is really important, so listen!” She told the masked man. “If we wanna get outta here, we need to stay united. No more voting against each other. We’re all the same down here. Dummy, Weakling, or Ugly… League or Rocket.”

She didn’t know how much longer the dream would last, so that message needed to be imparted before it was too late. However, if she wanted to earn that person’s trust, she needed to be transparent with him. “I’m Andrea. Back home, I run a Minor Gym.”

A succinct introduction, all things considered. Now he knew whose name to call out for if he ever got in a tight spot.

Shit, he had to give a name? Damn. The last time Howard had done that, he had killed FERNANDO SILPH 's Natu. Not a fun time, given he had almost leaked his identity to the League. What was the fake name he had used on Fernando?

John? Joe? Danny? It was so long ago that Howard didn't remember. It was best to say something quickly, before Andrea thought that he was completely and utterly insane. The archaeologist's lip tightened beneath his mask as he thought of something quickly.

"I'm Carter." Carter lied through his teeth. Trust didn't necessarily need to be a two way street. It just had to uphold that appearance, and Carter didn't want to get through this prison in one piece only to get his identity leaked by someone related to a Hydreigon. "I work at Rustboro's Pokemart. If you need a discount, lemme know."

There was someone at the Rustboro Pokemart named Carter. It turned out that those smoke breaks behind the mart with Shred Zeppelin were paying off.

"Andrea, do me a solid." Carter turned to look at Chomper and the rest of Andrea's Pokémon. "Please keep that spirit. Never give up. As long as you're like this back in the prison..."

Carter nodded to himself.

"I think we might make it."

Carter the Pokemart guy. Andrea vowed to remember his totally real and not made-up-on-the-spot name. Those masks sought to remove their individuality, turning them into faceless playthings in the Loyal Three’s psychopathic game. Only by remembering who they were could they fight back against their own dehumanization.

“A discount, huh? I’ll make sure to cash it in once we’re outta here!” The young woman jested, making a mental note to do her shopping in Rustboro City from then on. Surely this would not lead to a humorous misunderstanding later down the line.

Nodding resolutely at Carter’s inspiring words, she added. “We will! We just gotta wait for the right moment! And when that moment comes, we’ll not only save all our friends, but also make those wardens regret messing with us!”
