Naomi Sato, communicating with the League? That was news to Zev. If Theo knew about it, then her operation must have been sanctioned by the highest ranks of Team Rocket's leadership. [break][break]

Unfortunately, it didn't sound like the Head Scientist was making much headway, if the underboss' comment was any indication. [break][break]

The greater surprise, though, was Theo's suggestion of reaching out to illeana reyes. Memories of their recent clash came to the fore of Zev's mind. Her taunting words. Her fingers twisted in spatial threads to counter his dominion over gravity. [break][break]

Recalling their unresolved conflict left a sour taste in his mouth. His eyes narrowed. [break][break]

"What makes you think Reyes will share information with us?"

How did Theo know? That was the thought that wrestled itself to the center of Zev's contemplations as he turned the underboss' words over in his mind. [break][break]

Wordlessly, he placed his white pawn within three maneuvers of the black king. He did not expect a swift victory, however. Pawns were lousy captors. They had purpose, but trapping the opponent in checkmate was not the primary one. [break][break]

Still, it was worth putting Theo in a position of discomfort, however fleeting. [break][break]

"I'll consider it." A pause. "I'll check on Sato, too, in case she needs assistance."

Zev moved his next piece to counter Theo's maneuver. The request to assist with Naomi Sato's emotions was a small one, in the grand scheme of the universes; Zev saw no need to object. He had more than enough reason, now, to have a conversation with the Head Scientist anyway. [break][break]

Peace with the League? How childishly naive. But such idyllic notions were what he expected from a woman who'd just graduated from university. College kids thought they knew everything and could do anything. [break][break]

"i'm expecting the same results i would from any of our personnel. for them to learn from their failures."

in kanto, failure would often be accompanied by some form of reprimand. for the likes of theo, Cillian Quinn, and jayden cross, it often came in the form of violence both physical and psychological, resulting in lifelong scars and habits.

it isn't as harsh in hoenn, at least not comparatively, but times are changing.

"she is young, harcourt, and terribly inexperienced when it comes to matters outside her expertise. with the backing of her unown, she believes herself important, but she must be reminded of her place, and she must come to that realization on her own."

Such subtle tactics were unheard of in Kanto, but considering Naomi Sato's naïveté, perhaps breaking her required more nuanced methods. Zev accepted Theo's answer, not caring either way if the woman succeeded or failed. [break][break]

As long as she did not get in the way of his own schemes, she could do whatever she liked, as far as he was concerned. [break][break]

"Then she doesn't need my assistance after all," he observed. "Emotionally or otherwise. She'll bring about her own downfall if left to her own devices." [break][break]

The chess game seemingly forgotten between them, Zev stood and stretched, cracking his neck to relieve the pressure between joints. He was growing bored and restless, sitting there in the hospital with Theo. [break][break]
