While Jethro was still determined to maintain his hermit-esque lifestyle, he had found himself inexorably drawn further into the community he was now a part of. [break][break]

He had been running to town on what should have been a quick errand when he stumbled across the isolated little cemetery some ways from the main road, sitting at the end of a winding gravel trail. It was weirdly familiar, being reminiscent of similarly small rural cemeteries outside of Floccesy, and more familiar still was the sight of the haggard old man pushing a worn mower across its lawn. Jethro wouldn’t have paid him or his work any mind if he hadn’t watched the poor old bastard trip and fall forward as he barely avoided running over a short gravestone, but in that moment, Jethro felt his blood run cold as he watched the elderly man topple over. Instead of moving on to Fallarbor proper, Jethro instead found himself riding up, quicker than he thought the half-wild Rapidash could gallop, to rush to the man’s aid. [break][break]

The groundskeeper was mostly fine, as it turned out, but was shaken in a way that was specific to the old and feeble. When the man insisted on continuing his work in spite of the apparent dangers involved, Jethro found himself offering to conclude the labor in his stead. [break][break]

So that's how Jethro wound up here, hedge-trimmer in hand as he worked to tame a particularly ornery juniper bush that had outgrown its little corner of the cemetery. Wildfire grazed on some tall grasses just outside of the cemetery's border, and the scent of diesel still clung to the unseasonably hot air in the wake of the groundskeeper's departure in a rusted old pickup truck. [break][break]

Distantly, the ex-Ranger thought he caught the sound of tires rolling across crunching gravel. Maybe the groundskeeper had come back for some equipment he'd left behind? Or maybe someone else had stumbled upon Jethro to help with his newfound bit of labor. Either way, Jethro didn't bother to turn around to see who was approaching; he had a shrubbery to trim, and the heat of the midday sun only grew with each minute that passed.

"This shit's gettin' old," he muttered under his breath, the tires of his patrol car coming to a stop on the gravel path outside the Fallarbor Town cemetery.

Couldn't ARCEUS see that he was doing good now? Hell, Montgomery was even working with Navy as his deputy in Dewford now. That had to get him some brownie points. Regardless, it seemed that his Unovan counterpart had noticed that someone else was present aside from himself. He couldn't just scram now.

"The hell ya doin', cleaning up the cemetery?" Montgomery asked after he departed his car, casting it one last glance over his shoulder as he made his way closer to the older man.

Jethro stifled the urge to audibly groan when he recognized the voice that called out to him. He turned, holding out the hedge-trimmer with wary caution, and eyed the familiar cop striding up to him, [break][break]

“Trimmin' this fuckin' shrub, the hell's it look like?” [break][break]

He could help but glower at the other man, until he deflated somewhat with a long sigh. It was too damn hot to be getting this worked up, and besides, hadn't Montgomery insisted that he was trying to turn over a new leaf when last they met? Maybe Jethro would test the limits of the man's newfound benevolence; he stopped to wipe the sweat from his brow before continuing, [break][break]

“Ran inta the groundskeeper when he had a nasty fall, so I offered ta finish some'a the work for 'im.” [break][break]

He jutted his head towards a rake leaning next to a nearby tree at a particularly lonely corner of the lot, [break][break]

“I don't suppose you could spare a moment ta help me wrap this shit up, 'less you got a Litten ta rescue out of a tree, or some shit.” [break][break]

Though there was a solid chance that the now-cop really did have more important work to tend to, Jethro was also desperate to quickly wrap up the laborous task he had signed himself up for. Good will or no, he was starting to sweat like a whore in church, and the sooner he got home to cool off, the better.

Montgomery clenched his jaw, his eyes trailing back to the patrol car not too far away from him. The keys were settled in his vest, waiting to be pulled back out and put into the ignition.

He could just drive off. He could lie. After all, he was a busy man.

But not right now. And he was trying to disassociate himself from his former Rocket identity. With a heavy sigh and a curse underneath his breath, Montgomery kicked a rock as he approached and snatched the rake.

"Fuckin' fine."

Though he was not quiet about his displeasure.

Montgomery's displeasure did not go unnoticed. After tolerating as much of the other man's belly-aching as he could, Jethro looked back up from his work hacking at a shrub, [break][break]

“Quit yer bitchin'!” he barked sharply, “If yer gonna gripe about it the whole fuckin' time, then maybe you best be on your way.” [break][break]

Jethro stopped and sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose as his eyes drifted to the headstones around them. He frowned as his agitation was replaced by a new wave of melancholy, [break][break]

“'Sides, it's disrespectful.” [break][break]

The silver band on his left hand felt a little heavier, somehow, if only for just a moment.

There was something familiar in the long stare that Montgomery fixed him with. Jethro could feel that little bit of curious scrutiny, and if this work hadn't been so damn tiring, he would have found his hackles raised further. [break][break]

Montgomery didn't have to point out to Jethro his past. He already knew it well enough. But, whether or not he considered the Unovan Rockets "friends," or even "family," was a reach. In the end, the newly appointed deputy had betrayed them.

He still put dirt over their bodies with his own hands.

"I can't tell ya how I felt about them, Haig. You know that already..." he muttered, looking toward the tombstones as he leaned against a pillar. "What we did — what I did, was considered work. And we knew we were gonna die. Some of my choices put my colleagues in the grave."

That was something he'd have to carry with him forever. He had blood on his hands he'd never be able to wash away. And his parents... well they were dead too. But they were erased from history. There was not point in bringing them up to Jethro.

"I'm sorry if I seem disrespectful to ya, but my stance was far different from yers."

Jethro chuckled with some disbelief. It wasn't exactly the answer he was expecting, but one he probably should have seen coming. When you ran with the sort of crowd that Montgomery had in years past, then death would be sure to follow, [break][break]

“I suppose it is.” [break][break]

He watched Montgomery for another long moment before loosing a long and tired sigh. Just because his pain was different than Jethro's own didn't make it hurt any less, but something about it still felt strange. They knew each other only through exchanges from opposite sides of the law, clashes of violence and high-speed chases. [break][break]

But here, they had some sort of common ground, even if the specifics were different. Even if the pain was different. Jethro beckoned over his Rapidash and began to gather up the gardening tools left by the groundskeeper, [break][break]

“Think that'll prob'bly do it fer today,” he muttered. Jethro shot another glance back at the cop, “Thanks. Fer helpin', that is.”
