nabi was just one of several others lined up at the starting line for the voltorb obstacle course, a training exercise provided by the league. for someone like nabi, a cadet candidate testing out the waters and wondering whether joining the league was what she truly desired, this sort of thing was right up her alley. "how hard can it be?" she thought to herself when she originally saw the posted ad for the event.[break][break]

the obstacle course was to be completed with one's pokemon partner of choice and in groups of two. nabi had chosen poppy. and beside her stood a taller gentleman of dark hair. what was his name? she glanced at him, noting his physique.[break][break]

one by one, each group was given the signal to run into the next room where the obstacle course starter. even from behind the wall, nabi could hear the faint explosions of voltorb triggering. the unknown gave her a sense of thrill.[break][break]

she and her assigned mate were called forward. they were next in line.[break][break]

"you have experience with this sort of thing?" she asked him, lips edged into a small smile. "i'm nabi, by the way."[break][break]

a countdown was given. ten seconds till their turn.[break][break]

"i hope it rains voltorb on us, or it won't be fun," she then chuckled, wholeheartedly serious in her comment.[break][break]

seven, six...[break][break]

"oh, is this supposed to be a race?" she then thought. was she supposed to prove she was better than this guy? or was this a team job? she couldn't quite remember the instructions they gave earlier.[break][break]

three, two, one...

There was something to be said about volunteering yourself as a means to improve comradery.

It sucked. That's what should be said.

"Greyson," he says in reply, "and no, I try not to." Competitions and drills made him uneasy; he wasn't the competitive type, at least, typically.

The timer counts down in-front of both of them. His anxiety only heightens.

His own Pokémon, a small, chubby squirrel, sat on his shoulder chewing on one of those store-bought snacks.

"Sorry about this," he says, giving her a sympathetic smile.

The buzzer sounds and Greyson shoots forward, Tubby on his shoulder pressing down a field of GRAVITY over Nabi and her partner, giggling all the while.

"sorry?" there was little time for her to process what had just happened. without warning, the weight of her body was pulled low to the ground. she fell to her knees and struggled to keep the upper half of her body up. meanwhile for poppy, she laid flat with all fours spread out.[break][break]

"that cheat!" nabi spoke through grit teeth. she urged herself to get up. behind her, she could hear a few of the others laughing at her failure to even leave the starting line.[break][break]

"you're going to have to go ahead of me, poppy," nabi said to her companion, lifting the small mouse in her hands. "i'll catch up. don't let them get too ahead, hear me?"[break][break]

poppy made a mewl, uncertain what the heck her trainer was insinuating.[break][break]

nabi took two steps forward, pushing herself into the next room, and looked straight ahead. she could still see greyson's figure. "on three," she warned poppy.[break][break]

poppy suddenly had a terrible feeling.[break][break]

on the number three, her body was sent flying through the air like a baseball. she had even curled herself into a ball, truly making her seem like an oncoming object. simply out of fear, poppy released a smokescreen, covering the area and the nearby voltorb in total blackness.

Greyson felt bad about the trick—it was almost entirely the opposite of what he'd have done typically. That was really why he'd done it. Maybe they wouldn't call him back?

He was relieved knowing that she wouldn't maintain any serious harm—outside of her reputation, maybe, but he could soothe that out.

A squeak of alarm on his shoulder has him snapping his head back in confusion. A small honey badger coated in flame and smoke was barreling right at him.

Was this the Fast-Ball special Wovlerine and Hulk mainstreamed?

Greyson almost laughs, but the threat could not be ignored. "Tubby!" Lifting the mouse in the same way, Greyson tosses the chubby electric-type. As the two Pokémon reach collision space, a SPIKY SHIELD erupts around Tubby.

Of course, that did nothing for any momentum. If the collision continued as planned, Greyson would watch with mild-horror and amusement as his Pokémon went rebounding off the trail.

if it weren't for her ninja training, nabi was certain she would have already toppled over from the effects of the gravity. perhaps those days of meditating under a waterfall counted for something![break][break]

her body pushed through, and as the seconds passed, so did the heavy pressure surrounding her. she looked up ahead to watch the results of her and poppy's combined power. little did she suspect that her opponent would have the same thought.[break][break]

"poppy, look out!" she tried to warn the cyndaquil, but there was no stopping the collision of the two rodents. and with the smokescreen up, nabi could not see the end result.[break][break]

meanwhile, poppy's body hit against the protective spikes of the togedemaru, eliciting a yelp from her. she fell to the ground, jumping around as if she had just stepped on a nail.[break][break]

now making her way through the smoke, a certain pink-haired individual raced to catch up to greyson, both arms locked at 90-degree angles and eyes shining on the target she could not yet see.[break][break]

she had somehow forgotten the main goal: avoid the voltorbs.[break][break]

somewhere in the smoke, a pair of voltorb bided their time.

As Tubby goes rebounding and rolling off the beaten path—a growing concern considering the race ahead—Greyson swats away the lingering smokescreen.

The silhouette of something—someone?—forms in the smoke and he can't help but think that they're coming straight for him. Was he imagining things? Just in-case...

Greyson hightails it the opposite way, making it two feet before he trips on something, air escaping his lungs on impact. Blinking away the tears he spots the culprit—a voltorb.

And it was shaking violently.

A shrill, piercing scream, pulses out from the smoke and there was no proof it came from Greyson Connors.

Was that that scream of a helpless boy? It was quickly sounded out by an explosion, and that only meant one thing.[break][break]

"Chance!" Nabi said under her breath. The smoke lifted, and there huddled on the ground, she saw her cyndaquil rolled into a ball. "Gotcha!" She swiped Poppy into her hand and held her against her chest.[break][break]

Nabi kicked off her feet. Up ahead, she saw Greyson Connors and used that to fuel her speed. "Later, sucker!" she yelled once she passed him, but her victory was premature.[break][break]

From above, not one, not two, not even three—but many voltorb began to rain from the cieling. These guys weren't holding anything back in this test, were they?[break][break]

Nabi looked up in terror, just in time for one of the voltorb to hit her plank in the face and cause her to lose her balance. One leg whipped up in the air as her body fell onto her back.[break][break]

It was her turn to scream.

His scream—and subsequent curse—all die on his lips, no oxygen left in his body to fuel such a fruitless act. He considered himself lucky that the explosions were muted—no doubt the organizers recognizing that killing its competitors would be a massive mistake.

He pushes himself to his feet his chest rising and falling, air filtering in through raspy gasps. Defeat was inveitable. Why did that bother him so much? He was only here for charity. But he did want to win, but now it was too la—

Her scream pierces through the veil and new life surges through him.

"Tubby!" He screams in a wheeze and an ELECTRIC TERRAIN surges through the arena's floor. It sent pinpricks spiking into his feet and shins and would do the same for nabi park on any part of her body touching the ground.

The Togdemaru comes barreling out, rolling with boundless energy, right next to Greyson as he surges forward. Victory would be theirs! So close...!

"Clear the field Tubs!"

PIN MISSILE'S shoot sporadically into the smoke and Voltorb's fall enmasse. Let's hope he didn't hit his friendly competitor too!

Man, she was out of touch. All those years spent training to be an elite ninja for Team Rocket, and for what? Nabi mentally made a note to get herself back on some sort of training regime and perhaps less junk food.[break][break]

After a series of explosions (one dangerously close to Nabi's money maker), the pinkette found herself heaving on the ground, arms and legs outstretched like a lifeless doll. "I'm... not... done..." she said out loud to no one.[break][break]

A squeak to her right forced her to turn and look at Poppy who was, thankfully, managing. The flames on her back were erupt with life. "You're right, Poppy. We can't give up now," Nabi said with newfound determination.[break][break]

She rose to her feet, body and bones and will aching, just in time to see a faint shine cover the obstacle course. The hairs on her skin stood in response. At this rate...[break][break]

"We're both going to QUICK ATTACK the rest of the way," she said to Poppy, giving the cyndaquil an affirmative nod before breaking into a dash. She could watch for the voltorb clearly now and had full intentions of bounding around them until several pointed-like objects came flying through the air, causing the voltorb to flee and retreat.[break][break]

On one hand, it helped to create a path for Nabi. On the other, she felt several needles scrape against her skin and rip her clothes. Nabi yelped but ignored the dissheveled clothes. She could feel his presence right behind her, closing in![break][break]

Almost there, almost there...!

His own flesh and bones screamed for a release that determination would not let come. Not yet. But, even as he closed the distance, victory placed surely in his grasps, Greyson couldn't help but admire Nabi's tenacity.

At his side the chubby rat was heaving and ho-ing with great effort, tiny arms swinging, body swaying left and right under the strain. With a smile tugging his lips he yoinks the creature up and into his arms, much to the chagrin of Tubby, and slows down just enough to still be convincing.

As Nabi crosses the finishes line, seconds after, so too does he. Bent forward, hands on his knees, Greyson's breath comes quick. After a few moments, he looks up to the unknown woman and smiles.

"That was a good race. Close, too." Standing straight, grin turning wild beneath a light-head, he holds out a hand. "Congrats!"

A timer buzzed in as the two participants crossed the finish line. Nabi did not care to look at her pathetic time, caught up in her own breathing while also hugging Poppy for their victory. "We actually won," she said through exhales. It was a much needed boost of confidence for the girl, even if it had only been by a few seconds.[break][break]

Feeling proud, Nabi turned to face Greyson Connors and energetically took his hand, shaking with vigor. "Well, I am a naturally fast person," she chimed, unaware her opponent had given her the win. "But your togedemaru really is something! That was a cheap move, yanno." Nabi finally released her grip on him. "Slowing us down like that at the start." Still, she smiled genuine. Despite the voltorb and explosions, it had been... fun.[break][break]

"You're a good trainer. Thanks for the challenge!"
