Having made good headway into the gym challenge, Noel finds himself already stepping up to the plate for his next battle. This time against Hideo Kino, who he had the pleasure of meeting during an excursion in the Giant Chasm. When he learned of his status as a gym leader, it came as a big surprise for the blue-haired trainer. Hoenn was full of child prodigies, it seemed, and he especially wouldn't let his guard down for this one.[break][break]

Walking through the gym entrance, he announces his arrival to the receptionist and is led through to the main arena. There he places himself on the challenger's side of the field, letting loose his Shaymin who stands ready for the beginning of their match. The two of them look ahead to see Hideo waiting on the other side. Noel lets off a cheeky smile as he introduces himself.[break][break]

"Good to see you again Hideo. Didn't think this is where I'd meet you next time but ever since last time, I've been wanting to see just how strong you are."[break][break]

Most challengers, Hideo didn't know prior to them signing up. It was hardly an issue - anyone (that wasn't a criminal) could challenge his Gym as long as he had an opening. It was a rare occasion that he got to battle someone he'd actually met before.

Even if it was only once before. He couldn't say he truly knew Noel Parker , but a single job together was still more than most.

Hideo was getting the room ready, his receptionist escorting the challenger this time. Once Noel was inside, he'd already get to see what Pokemon Hideo had chosen to face off against: a rather giddy-looking Scream Tail, who seemed more than eager to get a chance to battle.

Which may have been the reason why Hideo had to wait here, his hand still holding its Pokeball. And perhaps a few of the Psychic Pokemon that stayed at the edges of the arena were a bit closer than they needed to be.

"Glad to see you too!" Hideo said, waving back.

He wondered if Noel knew the joke in those words.

"We did get a chance to watch our Pokemon fight, and we get another now! Though guess the context this time's a bit more competitive~"

With Noel's Pokemon - a Shaymin - out, there was little need to wait. "Well, now that we got our Pokemon ready, let's set up the stage!" A Psychic Terrain was spread by the Psychic Pokemon at the outer edges of the arena, the environment quickly transforming into something completely different.

The Golden Forest

The building around them disappeared, as did the small audience that was watching the battle in-person. It would be as if the Gym they were in had never existed, nor the city of Littleroot. Around them was a great forest of spice bushes, a beautiful blue sky above them. The ground appeared rocky and rough, and there was even a small lake on the side - but it was purely illusory, feeling no different from before, even if the water would ripple from their actions.

Something the Scream Tail was very eager to test out, hopping up and down in the fake lake.

Despite the room seemingly expanding, all challengers would be aware of the proper dimensions of the room (as well as where the spectators were located), courtesy of the Pokemon with Telepathy.

"Now that we got the room properly set, challenger gets the first-"

The Scream Tail let out a squeal, and a light floated from it - a Sunny Day appearing as the sun itself seemed to shine above them.

"...well, challenger's supposed to get the first move."

The room suddenly shifts, what once was a regular arena is now a lush forest clearing with greenery surrounding the two sides. A setting that reminded Noel's Shaymin of the past, of its time before their chance meeting. When everything was much more simpler. But now the two are on a grand journey, one to protect their region. And this is but one step towards that.[break][break]

Bright light envelops the area, one that empowers the Scream Tail. Already their foe had the advantage, but that wouldn't be enough to unnerve the challengers.[break][break]

"Heh, I guess all Scream Tails are alike. Mine acts just the same way as yours... Hope you're ready... Because here we come!"[break][break]

Without further ado, the Shaymin takes up a battle stance and lets out a quick shout to signal their offense. Quickly does it unleash an Earth Power. Through the unnatural terrain, a crack could be seen traveling from underneath the hedgehog, slithering its way towards the Paradox Pokemon. Once it reaches its mark, two slabs of rock would come out of the ground from opposite sides and close in quick, attempting to crush Hideo's Pokemon.

"Can't say I've dealt with any other Scream Tails…but it's good to know mine's not the only one like this! Hope you had an easier time with yours than I did with mine here!"

The Scream Tail paid no attention to its trainer's words, kicking up little splashes of fake water. It was so enraptured that it didn't pay any attention to its opponent either, nor did it pay any heed to the Earth Power coming its way.

The two stone slabs popped out from the lake, spraying illusory water everywhere. That managed to get the Scream Tail's attention, though too late to evade the attack. The Scream Tail was squished between two rocks, making for a Scream Sandwich.

The Scream Tail rotated its body, facing towards the Shaymin. A low growl could be heard from the sandwich - it was far from done.

"Go on, Biggly!" Hideo shouted. "You can fight that one! But it's a friendly fight, so no biting anything off!"

The Scream Tail took that cue to squeeze out of the two rocks, quickly regaining its round shape as it glared at the Shaymin. It breathed in a mighty breath, before letting out a mighty noise: a Boomburst aimed straight for its opponent, the water rippling behind the sound wave.

Nothing was scarier than an angered pink ball of cuteness, Noel knew that firsthand with his own Scream Tail. The ferocity in which these ancient Pokemon showed was enough to send even him reeling back in fear of what they could do. To live everyday knowing that his own Paradox Pokemon could one day be his ruin, unnerved him to no end.[break][break]

A mighty shockwave of air escaped from the Scream Tail's mouth. The sound was ear-piercing, to say the least, causing both Noel and his Shaymin to flinch back and try to cover their ears. This momentary defenseless act gave the move ample time to travel across the water surface, landing squarely against the hedgehog's body that causes it to tumble backwards a few feet.[break][break]

Slowly does the challenger rise back up, a fierce look now painted across its face as its eyes stab towards their foe.[break][break]

"A lucky hit... but not enough to take us down! Show them that your bite is worse than your bark Shaymin!"[break][break]

Quickly does the grass-type run across the field, its legs scurrying through the rough terrain. Once enough distance had been closed, it leaps into the air with a swirl of mystical energy gathering around the front of its face. A Zen Headbutt that aimed to deflate the pink balloon.

The Scream Tail watched as its attack sent the Shaymin tumbling back, a wry grin on the Pink Puffball's face.

And after seeing its foe take the hit, did the Scream Tail attempt to capitalize on the advantage, and follow up on the attack?

Nope! It went right back to the illusory lake, playing around with the fake water, splashing it over the rocks that had, a moment ago, been used to crush it.

"Not the time for that, Biggly," Hideo scolded. The Scream Tail looked back at him, speaking some Pokespeak at him that he assuredly wouldn't understand.

Hideo pointed towards the incoming Shaymin. "You gotta watch out for attacks, Biggly!"

And the Scream Tail did indeed watch out for the Shaymin, for it turned to face it just as the Zen Headbutt came right for it, smacking square in its big pink face.

It wasn't deflated, but it did get sent flying back. Once it regained its footing, it looked back at the Shaymin, a tear dripping out of the eye of a pouting face.

The Scream Tail was miffed before, but now it was mad; that headbutt clearly hurt more than the rocks did. And the Scream Tail wanted retaliation.

It knew just how to get it, too.

Hideo had ordered it to not bite anything off.

He didn't say it couldn't bite.

So the Scream Tail rushed towards the Shaymin, its teeth glowing a light-purple as it aimed to get some Psychic Fangs on its foe.

As the Shaymin recoiled back from its frontal assault, it lands back on its feet and shakes any head damage it may have incurred onto itself. However in this brief moment of respite, it doesn't notice the Scream Tail already moving in to take its revenge. [break][break]

It closes the gap between them faster than Noel and his Pokemon thought was possible, its bare fangs sinking into the grass-type's body, the psychic force giving it that extra oomph that causes the Shaymin to cry out in pain. The Paradox Pokemon waves it around like a dog toy, playing with its prey until it would either submit or the Scream Tail decided enough was enough.[break][break]

"Grr... I was hoping I wouldn't need this to help me out but... I've got no choice now."[break][break]

Noel unveils the Tera orb placed onto his belt and presses on the device, a flow of crystal energy spilling forth towards the Shaymin. Once it reaches the Pokemon, Tera crystals form around the Mythical like a plate of armor, breaking off the hold that the Scream Tail had on it. The small hedgehog jumps back with its shiny Stellar Tera unfolded for all to see.[break][break]

" All right it's payback time... Show them what you've got Shaymin!"[break][break]

With a battle cry, Noel's partner's body glows with a green energy that shines outwards due to its Tera form. Once ready, it unleashes a Seed Flare that shoots out towards the Scream Tail, hoping to knock it out in one go.

Though it wasn't apparent to the battlers, several of the Pokemon maintaining the illusory background were closely watching the Scream Tail, to make sure it wasn't being too rough with its opponent; it was only supposed to knock out the Shaymin, not kill it.

Fortunately, the challenger acted before it could've gotten that far.

The Scream Tail was forced to release its bite on the Shaymin, unwilling to test if its mouth could accommodate a Tera Crown.

It even stared at the crystals, entranced by all the pretty colors on display. It was completely distracted until it heard the Seed Flare coming its way - and by then, the attack hit it face first, its body punched in like it'd just licked a particularly-sour lemon.

It rolled along the ground until it slowed to a stop, laying on the ground face-first.

But a moment later, it looked up, the frustration in its eyes clear. Had it not been enhanced by the sun shining above, its Protosynthesis in effect, that attack no doubt would have spelled its defeat.

Though its return to its feet was a shaky one - even if it was still in the fight, it was still hanging by a thread.

The Scream Tail glared at the Stellar Shaymin, looking as if it were ready to cry. It inhaled deeply, before letting out a Noble Roar.

The Paradox Pokemon was yelling out with a war cry. Noel's Shaymin flinches from the sudden angry outburst. If they were left alone to continue on with this tantrum, whos knows how long it would be until they stopped. The longer this fight continued, the more exhausted the hedgehog would become. Especially against a Pokemon that seemingly never tired. Its round body must hold some sort of function that gave it boundless energy if it could scream all day like that.[break][break]

Noel looks to his Shaymin, who in turn looks back to him.[break][break]

"We're gonna have to put our all into this next shot... Or else we're in for a world of hurt once its finished. Its time to use our surroundings to our advantage... Hit them with a Solar Beam!"[break][break]

The Stellar Pokemon shouts out as well, as if competing with the Scream Tail. It gathered energy from within itself, a green light pulsating from its very body. Power surges from within, and thanks to the sun shining down in all its heat, the process is sped up quickly.[break][break]

Once ready, the Shaymin unleashes the laser straight ahead. A long beam of grass energy that, while not boosted by its Tera, still packed a punch all on its own. It would hope to end the Jigglypuff look-alike's concert in one fell swoop.

The Golden Forest

It was an impressive roar, no doubt one that could strike fear into one's foes - but it was a warcry best meant for the beginning of a fight, not the end of one.

The Sunny Day that enhanced the Scream Tail's defenses wasn't exclusive to just its user; it could empower its foe just as easily. Case in point, the magnificent Solar Beam, charged in a moment's notice thanks to the (false) sun's power.

For the first time, perhaps because the Scream Tail was actually facing this attack, a look of fear found itself on the round Pokemon's face as the Solar Beam struck its body, sending it flying back. It slammed into one of the trees (actually a wall of the arena), hitting the ground with an unceremonious *thud*.

Hideo approached his fallen Pokemon, kneeling besides it. "Doing alright, Biggly?" he asked.

The Scream Tail wasn't facing its foe, so that they couldn't see the tears dripping from its eyes as its arms were folded in front of its body. It let out some grumbles of annoyance. Even as Hideo tried to reach over to it to comfort it, it pushed the boy's hand away, sticking to its tantrum.

Hideo stood back up, turning back towards his opponent. "Think that's it for Biggly for now." He took out a Pokeball, recalling the tantruming Pokemon. "So the win goes to you!"

The illusory setting around them began to dissipate, bringing the battlers back to reality.

"Well done, Noel!" Hideo said, a few of the psychic Pokemon maintaining the illusion approaching him. He handed his Scream Tail's Pokeball over to one of them, another advancing towards the Shaymin to give it a Heal Pulse.

The battle had ended. Noel and his partner watch with amazement as the area around them shimmered and returned back to normal. It's incredible to think what wonders the power of Pokemon are able to bring forth, being able to shape reality as they see fit. Noel lets out a sigh in relief, thankful that they didn't have to continue on any longer. Anymore and he was afraid that Scream Tail would be more than they could handle.[break][break]

After congratulations were given, he's asked a rather thought-provoking question. There were many different paths the two of them could've taken in this fight. Each one either culminating in their victory or defeat. There was always something that could've been done differently, always room for improvement. But there's one that stands above the rest.[break][break]

"If I had to say just one... well..." he pauses for a moment, the answer clear in his mind, "I would've not gone as close as we did in this battle. Purely for the reason of not having to see my Pokemon in pain like it was. Our Pokemon are more than just ways to fight, they're our companions. And I'll do anything it takes to see them safe and sound."[break][break]

A slight smile forms on his mouth. The little hedgehog beside him chirping as if agreeing with its trainer. Noel takes the badge from its gym leader, one more step closer to his goal now. He was far from being ready however, completing the gym challenge wouldn't be enough. He needed to prove himself somehow, to show that he was ready.
