Even if Eddie could have understood the real extent of Josh's praise, it would have been a hard thing to accept. He still had a long way to go before he was someone worth lauding, if that was an end point that Eddie could ever actually reach, [break][break]

“That's rough,” he offered sympathetically, “A Pokemon's personality can be real hard to work with, but that's part'a the fun, ain't it? But it's hard to get a read on a critter that doesn't have the same kinda heart.” [break][break]

Eddie couldn't even begin to comprehend the oddities intrinsic to an ashen Raikou, a strange shadow of the lightning beast. Maybe there were echos of the real Pokemon's personality there, or maybe it was more like an obedient golem, without much of a will of it's own. Navigating these oddities was probably harder without the previous owner being around to offer guidance. Though, speaking of, [break][break]

The idea of watching some of the last living footage of Kyle, former champion of Hoenn, was too intriguing of a prospect to pass up. Outside of his one or two run-ins with the guy, Eddie didn't know a lot about him, outside of what he'd heard from his friends. And besides, he could probably learn a thing or two from watching the best of the best clash, [break][break]

“Heck yeah!” Eddie beamed, brimming with bright enthusiasm. Blanche barked happily next to him, echoing her trainer's jubilant mood.

Or as Josh would later find out, no heart at all. MATIAS SILPH ' words were becoming more and more wise by the moment. The ashen Raikou was not a Pokémon; it truly was a construct. An obedient but soulless construct.

Buyer beware, indeed.

"Can you help me set the stand on my phone, then hit play for me please?" Josh asked after loading the recording. "That way we can watch it together." Provided Eddie was willing, he would see the full story of their battle. It was a battle that anyone in Hoenn would kill for. All four of Josh's starter Pokémon were present and frighteningly strong. They stared down Entei, Marshadow, and even the Great One, Ho-oh.

Most importantly, Eddie would get to witness the exact moment Ho-oh cleansed and purified Josh. The first time Josh drew the Sign. The moment Kyle passed down Ho-oh's blessing to channel ash. It was a magical moment that made Josh's hair stand on end. "I still can't believe this happened," the Gym Leader mused. "I used to look forward to seeing Kyle once a season to ride on his Raikou. The same one you see there. And now, I can do it whenever I want." He felt the warmth of the flames as though Ho-oh's SACRED FIRE burned within him still.

Shortly after finishing the match, a nurse knocked on Josh's door, ready to draw his blood and perform some other tests on him. "Well, I think they're gonna kick you out now. See you soon, and thanks for visiting me. It's lonely up here."

With only a little finagling, Eddie carefully set the phone upright, and peered at its small screen to watch the spectacle unfold. [break][break]

And, sweet Arceus, what a spectacle it was. It was a real Cinderalla story, with one man standing alongside the Pokemon that had been by his side for years against legendary creatures. A Marshadow lurking in the penumbra of an Entei's wake, the Ho-Oh emerging born from a plume of ash to pass its divine judgment; it was astonishing to watch, and Eddie suddenly realized that he had been holding his breath in spite of himself, [break][break]

“Hell, I can hardly believe it either, and I just watched the damn thing,” he chuckled breathlessly. [break][break]

But he was torn from his awe by the nurse's arrival, and Eddie was suddenly thrust back into the real world, [break][break]

“Ah shit, you're prob'ly right.” [break][break]

Eddie moved to take his leave, but stopped for one final moment, looking back to Josh in his hospital bed, [break][break]

“Hey, promise me you'll take it easy?” [break][break]

Eddie's tone, though weighed by his serious intent, was soft with fondness for his friend, and for the man he had just watched put up the fight of the century, [break][break]

“That you'll get some rest. Give yourself a chance to heal, and give yourself the chance to get outta here ASAP.”
