Some clumsy dude with a pair of Pikachu - no wait, that's the baby one, Pichu - almost smacks him in the face with the general store door. Caleb grunts, maneuvering out of the way just in time to avoid a broken nose. Nox hops off his shoulder in an equally desperate attempt to prevent injury, then buzzes over to one of the yellow rodents, wings unfurling in irritation.[break][break]
"Watch it, buddy," Caleb mutters, half-distracted by the way this place puts him on edge.[break][break]
Littleroot carries the scars of his first battle with Zev on Hoenn soil, after all.

aaron raises his eyebrow, affronted by Caleb Harcourt's brusque words. he just apologized, so he can't wrap his mind around this guy copping an attitude. so maybe he almost smashed his face with a door, but he didn't end up actually hitting him. [break][break]an indignant squeak out of pikatwo finally snaps the thin thread of his patience. he gives a cursory glance at the lokix standing before his rats, then glares at the trainer himself. [break][break]"hey, watch your bug, buddy. my pikachu and pikatwo are battle-hardened, bloodthirsty warriors." [break][break]only one of them has the battle experience, really, but he's not about to tell this guy that.

He can just keep walking. He can just let the door slam shut behind him. He can buy the energy drink and bag of chips he was hoping to procure, and by the time he's done, this random guy and all his comical machismo will be long gone.[break][break]
It would be the smart thing to do. It would be the easy thing to do.[break][break]
But he doesn't do it.[break][break]
Against his better judgement, Caleb whirls around, making his way back outside. He stares the guy down with eyebrows raised, stormy blues shifting from the (admittedly) handsome face of the haughty stranger to the yellow rodents (who look anything but bloodthirsty) and then back up at the stranger again.[break][break]
"Warriors," he repeats, incredulous. "Right."[break][break]
Nox wants nothing to do with the Pika-siblings. He scurries up onto Caleb's shoulder, looking offended that anybody thought he might want to fight these lesser creatures in the first place.[break][break]
Now it's awkward. He's made it awkward. They're just...standing there.[break][break]
"Look, it's fine. Sorry. I'm just having a bad day."

Caleb opens his mouth to give the most generic answer on earth, then shuts it. With a sudden resignation, he steps away from the general store, joining the other man on the street. So much for the chips.[break][break]
"Well," he starts. How to explain that he's surrounded by specters? Haunted by ghosts? Getting thrown out of people's homes by psychic force? All because he doesn't want anyone else making the same mistakes he has. Especially people with the capacity to actually do some good for the region.[break][break]
"No matter what I do, shit keeps getting worse."[break][break]
He runs a hand through his hair, flashes the stranger a wry smile.[break][break]
"I stopped an important person from doing something they would surely have regretted, and now they're pissed at me. More than usual, I mean." Greyson Connors was always pissed at anyone remotely associated with Rocket - past or present. "On top of that, found out recently my brother - who was already the worst - is actually a monster. Like, has powers and shit. Terrible ones. And he's with Rocket, so."[break][break]
He shrugs. Obvious, isn't it? How fucked they all are.

He gapes at the guy. A full-on mouth-hanging-open brain-short-circuiting expression.[break][break]
Marvel? Like, the superhero comics? Does he think this is some kind of joke?[break][break]
"Hell," he finally finds his voice. It's dripping with sarcasm. "Why didn't I think of that?"[break][break]
But the stranger's expression isn't mocking. It's just a pleased little grin, totally sincere, as he enjoys his pretty mediocre-looking sandwich (all things considered). And Caleb realizes: this dude's for real. He really thinks he's helping.[break][break]
And all of a sudden, the resentment dissipates. The irritation wanes. There's so much he hasn't said, so many layers to this history, the very town they stand in just a single snapshot in a long and arduous tale of two brothers. Nobody could be expected to get it, not with so little context. And instead of call him crazy, instead of demand more of an explanation, this man with the two electric rodents simply offers the best possible advice he thinks he can give.[break][break]
"My name's Caleb," he holds out his hand to the guy, his first real attempt at an apology. At some kind of do-over on this potential friendship. "Caleb Harcourt. I'm a Ranger working out of Slateport. And, uh, you are?"

Caleb doesn't typically dap, but for this guy? Sure. He returns the gesture with a good-hearted if-awkward attempt at coolness, not caring if it falls flat. He's being called stupid, and he doesn't necessarily disagree, so he might as well roll with it.[break][break]
The guy's name is Aaron. Caleb knew an Aaron once, back in Kanto, before the war. That one had been a pain in his ass, always screwing up group projects and missing the net during soccer practice despite somehow still making the team. Maybe all Aarons were annoying: a law of the universe.[break][break]
"Melody better watch out," Caleb replies, trying not to roll his eyes. She'd been promoted after the death of kyle lopez, he remembers. "What are you doing in the meantime? Like, for training and such."[break][break]
Something - he truly has no idea what - keeps him tethered to the spot he's standing in, continuing to hold a conversation with this new Aaron.

Aaron asks the question like it really is strange for someone who works in one city to be visiting another. There are a million logical reasons that could explain it, but Caleb's starting to get how this guy works: this is his way of showing he's at least marginally interested in Caleb's existence, even if it involves using less than half a brain cell.[break][break]
"I'm just passing through," he explains, truthfully. "Heading west, to some of the islands off the coast of Dewford."[break][break]
He glances around at their surroundings, a sudden flash of memory from nearly two years ago: thorny briars clinging to demolished buildings, blocking his path, as Zev's voice haughtily insisted he return home. It was the first time he'd seen his brother since escaping Kanto.[break][break]
"Haven't really spent much time in Littleroot since the Meteno incident," he admits. "What about you? You come here often?"

Lilycove. The coincidences keep on coincidence-ing. Caleb had just come from there, his investigation of the Nautica headquarters producing frustratingly few clues. The islands are an assumption, a shot in the dark, a roll of the dice. In truth, he has no real direction.[break][break]
"Just rocks, yeah," Caleb agrees, but raises an eyebrow at Aaron's follow-up question.[break][break]
And then he laughs. Because traveling across the whole damn region just to mope is something he would do.[break][break]
