Sea spray whipped off the ocean waves, causing a fine mist to hang on the air and neatly obscure long-range vision of the two figures standing on one of the many barren islands surrounding Sootopolis City.

Fitted with a helmet from Rocket's store rooms, Nenet carefully sets up a camera to film the impending tests with Necrozma and Zev. At her side lingers her Clefable, ready to heal or Teleport at the very least his trainer from any accidents.

Angling the camera, Nenet then calls to Zev, "Ready when you are."

Initially, Zev had not wanted to film Nenet's study, but he knew the recordings were invaluable to her analysis and research. He begrudgingly agreed, provided she kept the files under encryption. He would not be pleased if either Team Rocket or the League got their hands on information he was not yet willing to reveal. [break][break]

At Nenet's signal, Zev turned to the shard of Necrozma that always accompanied him. A single nod was the only indication he gave to proceed. [break][break]

Light rippled across the shard's body, growing in brilliance until it engulfed the entire creature. He shielded his eyes, feeling instead of seeing the energy bursting outward from it. When he lowered his hand, he saw the shard transformed into its new, recently acquired form. [break][break]

Dawn Wings Necrozma. [break][break]

Turning his head to check that Nenet and her Clefable were fine at their safe distance from the shard, Zev asked his wife, "What do you want us to do first?"

If Nenet succeeded at one thing since her wrist slap in graduate school it was slipping data away from prying eyes. It had taken some cajoling and promising that the recording would be in safe hands until Zev relented, something she was immensely grateful for.

Allowing a faint smile to touch her lips as Necrozma rippled with a brilliant light, she stared hungrily at the Dawn Wings Necrozma now before her. She did not look to Zev initially, stead asking him without looking in his direction, "Do you feel any different? With Necrozma now in this form?"

Meanwhile, Clefable sulked as he realised his purpose was to either Teleport Nenet to safety or throw up a shield and then Teleport them to safety. What rotten luck. He decided to glare up hatefully at Zev - the souce of all his problems.

Tipping her chin towards the hovering Necrozma, she adds, "Touch it to test as well."

Craning his neck to look up at the Lunala-like Necrozma shard, Zev analyzed his inner landscape to find the answer to Nenet's question. When he couldn't detect any such difference, he reached out his hand to touch the curve of one wing. [break][break]

"Nothing," he said. "At least, not between the two forms." [break][break]

Looking over at Nenet, he continued, "But I did notice a change after the first time it transformed, back in Ultra Crater. I felt energized, as if I had absorbed Lunala's Infinity Energy." [break][break]

The feeling reminded Zev of oscar clayton's experiment with the machine in his laboratory and the Floette he kept caged there. The Rocket Beast's body had been fully rejuvenated, his senses sharpened to a razor's edge. Gone were all the small and mundane aches.

Eyeing the interaction with unbridled curiosity, Nenet nods at Zev's reply. "The initial reaction was likely a transference of energy that you felt, then. You've equalised now." Energy transformed.

"It's a bit like Mega evolution when you think about it. Its form changes and then reverts - a surge of energy causes it..."

Nenet hums, thoughtfully, and then reaches out without fear to touch Necrozma's wing, her hand laying just beside Zev's on the Pokemon.

The idea of energy transference made sense to Zev, though there was something else, too. He felt stronger overall, his efforts at the gym easier than before. His movements were faster, too—perhaps not in a noticeable way for someone observing him. But he knew his own body best, and he'd caught himself, once or twice, reacting more swiftly to small things. [break][break]

Catching a dropped object, for instance, or dodging an unexpected presence while turning a corner. [break][break]

Zev hummed a thoughtful note at Nenet's analysis. "It did look a lot like Mega Evolution," he agreed. "But I didn't think a Pokémon could undergo that kind of transformation unless a Mega Stone and Key Stone were involved." [break][break]

His wife placed her hand on Necrozma's wing, next to his. If she expected to feel anything unusual, she would not; only the smooth surface of the shard's inorganic form and the coolness of the metal. In fact, she would recognize its similarity to the crystals of her husband's body when caressed by an intimate touch. [break][break]

"Even now, when I gave my shard the signal to change, I didn't use any of my gear," Zev added, removing his hand to show Nenet the inert Key Stone embedded into his watch.

"It's likely not an equivalent of one to one," Nenet muses, her hand slowly sliding off Necrozma's wing. No reaction, sadly, but it was still knowledge nonetheless. "But something similar - a known factor we can compare it to."

She glances to Zev, flashing him a brief smile, before reaching into her bag to pull out a Pokeball. "I've another test in mind," she admits; absently her fingernail taps against the Pokeball, a soft click, click, click almost ominously filling the air.

A Minior emerges - one of many in Nenet's collection - and she states simply to Zev, "Absorb its light. I want to see what, if anything, happens."

Zev eyed the Minior, which did indeed glow with an inner light of its own. Absorbing it was an easy enough task, but he didn't know what would happen to the Pokémon, and Nenet loved the creatures. But if she were offering it as a sacrifice for knowledge, then who was he to argue? [break][break]

zev can absorb infinity energy from targets to weaken them and strengthen himself for a temporary period of time.

Without bothering to reach out to the Pokémon, he breathed in its light. Its color instantly began to fade as he felt new warmth fill his chest, boosting his energy and sharpening his senses further. Any externally expressed shift was subtle, perceptible only if Nenet was watching him closely. [break][break]

The Minior cried out in discomfort; it slowly dropped to the ground, too weak to keep itself aloft. [break][break]

Zev crossed his arms over his chest and raised an eyebrow at his wife. "Well? Is that what you expected?"

Her gaze cuts from Zev to Necrozma, barely a glance spared for the suffering Minior. She steps closer to Necrozma, examining it for any subtle changes as Zev absorbs the Minior's light.

"Does your bond feel different?" she asks over her shoulder. "I know the light rejuvenates you, but does Necrozma like this change anything?"

With permission granted, Zev continued sapping the Minior of its Infinity Energy, with no plans to stop until it had no more left. The Pokémon's whimpers grew louder and more forceful until they were high-pitched wails of agony. Its body spasmed uncontrollably as its very essence drained to feed the Devourer. [break][break]

Only an empty husk, dark and cold, remained when Zev finished. [break][break]

He shook his head at Nenet. "No, the bond doesn't feel different. And it seems that absorbing the light and Infinity Energy of an ordinary Pokémon does nothing for Necrozma, either." [break][break]

The shard had retained its Lunala-esque form throughout the experiment. Not an inch of it had changed to resemble anything like a Minior.

Something akin to disappointment touches Nenet's expression, though she ultimately does not look displeased at what has been learned at present. "It's a shame we don't have anything else to test with," she murmurs more to herself than Zev. There were other Pokemon, certainly, but nothing that would rival the abilities of Necrozma's original victim.

Shaking her head to herself, she moves to kneel by the dull and lifeless Minior. Hands moving, she methodically searches the poor Pokemon's shell before pulling out a hammer and spike of all things - did she normally keep that in her field bag? - and with a well-aimed swing splits open the Minior to reveal its core.

Nothing remains.

Trying another angle, she says instead with a tip of her chin towards the Necrozma shard, "Does it staying in that form strain you the longer it goes on?"

Zev watched with dispassion as Nenet cracked open the Minior's shell. The death of a Pokémon meant nothing to him, especially if it helped him achieve his goals. And any new knowledge gained from the experiment could go a long way. [break][break]

"We can keep testing—not just different Pokémon, but different states and forms," he reassured her. "Unless, of course, there's something about Lunala that makes it unique." [break][break]

He preferred their current working theory, however. [break][break]

Directing his attention to the transformed Necrozma shard once more, Zev turned his thoughts inward, assessing his energy levels. "Not at this moment, but it wouldn't surprise me if exerting effort while it's in this form did tax me. Or us."
