He wanted to reassure her, but in the end the words never leave his lips. He didn't want to lie. Not to someone he cared about.

"Me?" Was she asking out of polite habit, or was it genuine? Either way, the question rocks him to the core. He recovers quickly, lips turning into a soft, kind smile.

"I've been well." A half-truth. Well, a quarter-truth. "You look good, Penny, but don't let work run you down too much. We're too young for that kind of stress."

Walls were easier to build from an ivory tower. Back at headquarters, there was the safety of her responsibilities. The certainty of plausibility granted by the collar around her neck; stray too far, then prepared to get choked. Because, regardless of her feelings, there was always that higher objective to adhere to. A greater meaning beyond any petty squabble they could hold between them.

For ollie morales, or even CIAN MAHER, compromises were a possibility. She'd sooner suffer than allow the head ranger receive any blows. But Greyson Connors forgoed that privilege long ago.

He clamps down hard and sets his jaw.

“I’ve missed you too.” The admission would’ve been easier years ago, before everything that happened.

“I’m sorry for how things went down. How they keep going down.” They both had a part to play in it; they were both equally guilty. “Can we please stop running?”

Running? She was sprinting. Whenever the going got rough and the frames of their conversation began to careen leftward, mirroring her fears, ridding itself of empathy, she dashed. Back to her castle, with walls and sharp fences, and regulations warranting the release of her emotional ties.
